Brian - Did that XB9 have the stock Dunlops? Also, I've found that the bike is very under-sprung for someone of our weight class (I'm 231). I run the rear one setting from maxed on the preload and the front showing 2.5 lines (I think it'll go to seven or nine lines showing). I'll be going to 2.25 then most likely back to 2.0 as it seemed VERY balanced there. At 2.5 lines I started getting a little scrub out of the front tire (You know... When it feels like you could just do anything with the bars and it won't have any effect) if I don't get on the gas soon enough. Also at 2.5 it seemed that it's a little "too" difficult to slide the rear around the turn so I'll be going back to 2 lines. I may end up somewhere near 2.25 because having the rear a little more planted should allow a little more throttle...

Anyway... Did it have the stock Dunlops?

"I guess for some that pic is like bringing a gun to a knife fight? "

Maybe, maybe not... But for some reason it does remind me of the four corners rally I went to a few years back. I was riding a CB750F-SS at that point. I remember Saturday night they had a little 600 out by the bonfire and they were trying to blow it up. They must have tried for a good thirty minutes before they finally got pissed and threw it in the fire. As it was gasping it's last breaths of air before melting in a spectacular explosion of sparks I walked over to my 750 and reved it a few times in "rev"erence. Four to one Kerker w/ no baffle. I'm very sure they heard it loud and clear. Of course, I then grabbed the Benelli in case any of them decided they needed more kindling : ).

As far as the pic... There's one thing about "legendary" things. Things like H&K USP's, Colt 45's, Benelli, Muscle cars, Ferrari, Porsche, Erik Buell, Buells, Carrol Shelby, Enzo Ferrari etc. Anything truly legendary. People either love them or hate them. There tends to be few people in the middle if the product or person is truly legendary.

Enzo Ferrari - Erik Buell. M1, absolutely no point in arguing with you my friend. That's for sure.

As for suspension, if you're pushing 230lbs I'd suggest you drop some coin on upgrading your XB suspension. A Penske or Ohlins on the rear and Racetech or Traxxion Dynamics tweaks on the front, BY A SHOP THAT HAS A CLUE, will better serve you than turning dials.

I could be wrong on this, because XB's are so amazing at everything else, but you're overpowering the suspension. If you're locking the front down so much that you're feeling it push you need to beef up the front end. More than likely you need to beef up the rear too. I don't fully understand the alchemy that's suspension but better valving will improve damping and heavier springs will allow you to properly adjust sag. On an XB it might be tough to find a knowledgeable person, but when I have shocks installed the shop usually raises my rear ride height a few millimeters too.

That's why I can't seem to part ways with my Ohlins shod ZX12. The raised ride height made a big difference. She's no 600 in the turns, but she's pretty good, stable, and wickedly fast. I've contemplated putting it on the track just for kicks. But I don't want to wreck it.

Suspension is by far the single best improvement anyone can make to their motorcycle. Leave the pipes and powercommanders for last!

If the Dunlops were stock, then that's what was on the XBs I rode.

Do you have a link for that? The 1tail article made it sound like the frame failed on turn in. Their exact words were, "This thing came apart on me at the top of turn one". It would certainly be much better for Suzuki if the frame did not fail until the bike hit the wall. Apologies if I misunderstood.

http://www.1tail.com/2005_GSXR_frame/

**Edit, found MikeJ's post in the other thread. The other rider does indeed claim that the bike did not fail until it hit the wall, but the guy riding the bike seems to make it pretty clear. He said he was taking it easy and cruising along when the front end just went away. So who's story do we trust, the guy riding the bike, or the guy watching from the pits?

Mike L.

Pretty scoot -- the couple of hours I spent on one convinced me that a "Gentleman's Express" in indeed in my future (but, alas, not til I'm a gentleman -- long wait for that, I'm afeared)

"Gentleman's Express"--that brings back memories of an early '70's magazine project bike, I think it was a CB500 done cafe-style. Bomber, do you remember the one I'm thinking about?

I'm not sure I'll ever qualify for one using your benchmark!

Thang -- I know zactly what you're talking about -- blacked out logos, upgraded suspension, pipe, reworked carbs

me, I was thinkin about something along the likes of the Honda Blackbird -- but, knowing me, I'll likely find an old BSA and build it into a street tracker ;-}

Yeah... Traxxion Dynamics is pretty close to next on the list : ). I'll probably go find Marcus McBain if he still has time for street riders. I went with a pipe and remap first because I needed LOUD.

"If you're locking the front down so much that you're feeling it push you need to beef up the front end."

Agreed : ). I need to work with what I have right now though, and I'll be going from 2.5 lines of preload towards 2 lines. This should raise the front a couple mm and get me back to a good balance. As soon as I can, I'll be getting the suspension re-worked. I'm thinking an Ohlins TTX40 if they release it for bikes and just reworked Showa's for the front.

PLEASE ride an XB with Pirelli Diablo's or Metzeler M1's before you decide how the bike handles. The stock tires quite frankly SUCK. After I installed my Metz's I could tell in 25' that the bike was transformed. No more standing under braking, more traction, you have to actually lean it over to get to the edge of the rear tire and you have to REALLY lean it over to get to the edge of the front. The stock 207's felt squirmy at all times... cold, warm, hot... everything. Also, they were absolutely useless in the wet. Scary bad. The metzelers are excellent. Admittedly I've only tried the M1's and the 207's, but there was SOOOOOO much improvement with the Metzelers I'm affraid to switch...

This was w/o any suspension adjustments from where the manual had them for my weight class. I still can't understand why Buell went with those tires for the XB's. You'll notice that the CX comes with Scorpion Sync's at least...

Heheheh:

"PLEASE ride an XB with Pirelli Diablo's or Metzeler M1's before you decide how the bike handles."

Right back at you. Please ride all the new 600's and liter bikes before you decide how they handle. ; )

Just for giggles, I was looking up how Mike Barnes did last year. For those of you that don't follow the AMA too closely, Mike rode one of the sponsored XB's in FX last year. He also rode an R6 in Supersport.

The R6 was much more limited in terms of mods than FX bikes. Guess which bike Barnes was consistently faster on?

Oh, man, is that Triumph beautiful - I love Streettrackers.

"Gentleman's Express"--that brings back memories of an early '70's magazine project bike, I think it was a CB500 done cafe-style.

I remember that bike. If I remember correctly (the chances are remote), it was the noted autosports writer Henry J. Manney who wrote the article for Cycleworld magazine. I think it was his bike, too.

Don't forget our Buell Enthusiasts/ Sportster American Sport Bike Night/ Motorcyclist coffee run for this month.

This month it is at the Starbucks in Clayton California.

o May 26th, 7:00 PM
o Clayton Station Starbucks
o 1536 Kirker Pass Road A
o Clayton CA, 94517

There is also a cold stone creamery and a subway in the same complex, so if you are hungry or just want coffee and something sweet, it is available. Again, any motorcycle enthusiast is welcome, the more the merrier. No special program, No special program feature, Nothing to do, except have fun talking with other Buell Enthusiasts! See you there.

Vasco Road and then onto Marsh Creek road is a great ride, if you are coming over from Livermore, Tracy, Brentwood, etc. Lots of curvessssssssssssssss, you bet! Even Morgan Territory road is a cool road for coming over Mt. Diablo. Otherwise, you can hit 680 from pleasanton and go till you hit 24 and ignacio road....turn off of 680 and head east to Clayton. Once you pass clayton road, the third entrance is where starbucks is. (first turn in past clayton road is the shell station, the second turn in past clayton road is a restaurant and computer store, the third entrance is starbucks. We will try and reserve front spots)

Jim and Terry from Vallejo...Might be a good time to dust off the BRAG group from Vallejo and head on over. Jim, we could even start planning our S-2 Buell Gathering.

Linda and Teressa. We may want to grab and hold the front parking spots and then back out of them when the bikes show up, so the front can be full of buells. Thanks, rex

one
two
it's sitting right in front of a 2005 Ford GT (priced at $250,000).
continentals need to be replaced. Rear has a funny chicken strip pattern, maybe from low-pressure 1/4mi runs?
either has a leaking front head gasket and leaking rear base gasket, or the collapseable pushrod tubes are leaking, or both
I like the wheelie bar
Bonneville 2003 patch on the tank bra
two boost gauges, one shift light
good condition tho it's not detailed enough IMO for a place like that.
interesting mods to the heads and front motor mount. Motor mount has apparantly been clearanced for the frame.
Exhaust tube has also been clearanced for front tire.
I'll go back with the good camera tomorrow.
