Looking at the charts, the HD "Custom" shipments were lower. The VRSC is in the "Custom" group. Buell shipments were also lower. | |||

Hmmm...The H-D/Buell dealership I work at sold a record (for them) 105 bikes in March (including 2-3 Buells  ). 'Course the weather here in central Texas is more conducive to riding this time of year than in many parts of the country... Also, I've forgotten...did I mention that I posted pictures from the BRAG "Twisted Texas" Adventure and Thrills In The Hills IV in the Tale Section? Go look at them you monkeyfunkers! the long awaited helmet pics for those of you who keep asking...   The pic of the rear which is where the ER told me the third solid hit showed up was not very good due to the camera flash washing it out. It is mostly a thin stream of what look like incidental scratches. I am still working on my roomate to get pics of my riding gear so I can send it to FirstGear so they can see how it stood up under real world conditions. | |||

I was convinced back in '88 when I saw a girl on a moped get nailed by a guy in a Porsche. She went head first thru his windsheild. She was coherent and in good shape all things concidered, but that was the day I truly hada change of attitude about helmets. I was 18 and living in SoCal where helmets when there wasn't a helmet law. | |||

I was convinced on helmets when a buddy of mine went down in the rain and slid headfirst about 100'. The chinguard on his full face was ground down quite a bit. We looked at that and thought "That could have been my chin". | |||

I was convinced when I went down in some gravel doing about 40. The chinbar on my helmet was really tore up as well. Shoeis are good!! | |||

I wish I could find a shoei that fit...was trying them on over the weekend. As much as I loved my KBC, I am after something lighter now. | |||

I needed no convincing...but one of my buddies messed up a stoppie and slid headfirst for a decent distance. His helmet and face shield looked like they were worked over with a grinder. These brothers I knew were riding dirtbikes at this local "track". One was wearing a half helmet...the other a full face. Somehow they ended up going in opposite directions. They met in the middle. One needed reconstructive facial surgery. It's not hard to guess which. The other ended up with a mild concussion. Another reason to wear a helmet...an elderly local guy in my former neighborhood fell off his bicycle in his driveway. He lost balance when he threw his leg over...had no head gear and hit his head hard. Died of a brain hemorrage(sp?). | |||

It doesn't take much of a hit on a bare head to kill somebody. Even with a good helmet I have seen guys get knocked out and get concussions during very slow falls. | |||

Wyck... The VR series KBC's are lighter than the TK series by a good margin. I'm looking at getting a VR-2 pretty soon. They also have a very improved vent system that's flush. Very nice looking if you ask me. I think I'll get either the matte black (it'll match my bike  ) or the Assassin. The Assassin is REALLY cool lookin' . Check 'em out. They just re-vamped their entire line, and they say that the helmets pass "every" known major safety standard. Still priced right as well. | |||

Here's the Assassin...  And my other choice... But I'll probably go with the Assassin.  I like this one too, but it's not a VR series...  I've found the VR2's (top 2) for about 140-150, and the "Force S - Airborne" for about 130-150. | |||

Once upon a time.... skydivers ( the studley & stupid ones ) wore "frappe caps", cloth or leather "snoopy" helmets with sewn in strips of padding. Neat looking, light, but .005 more protection than bare head. Back in '77, Florida at the "new years boogie", 2 jumpers, one with helmet/one with frappe cap, bonked heads. Out cold, one went in. ( duh ) One of the guys chasing him, ( several did ) opened his 'chute for a 1 1/2 second ride. That's closer than I want to think of, & I watched it happen. A Frappe, is a drink made with crushed ice. Skydivers, like EMT's, have a sick sense of humor. | |||

I was convinced after crashing without wearing a helmet... i was just able to keep my head off the ground as i slid on my side about 25 feet. Watching the asphalt wizz by the side of your head only a few inches away, definatly convincing, and not my brightest moment.  | |||

I've had a few motorcycle crashes and have managed to keep my helmet off the ground (instinct I guess as well as the nature of the fall). There have been a couple bicycle crashes that've messed my face up some. One was at about 40mph with no helmet. I lost some cartilage off my nose (now instead of a bump there's a sharp edged flat spot in the middle) as well as splitting my chin open. Another in the dirt doing about the same speed split my chin again. I was wearing a helmet that time but still had a splitting headache for the rest of the day. It saved me from any further nose modifications though! Both times I went over the handlebars. The first one was due to another fallen riders bike hitting mine and the other was missing a big double jump. | |||

There have been a couple bicycle crashes that've messed my face up some. One was at about 40mph with no helmet. A couple of months after I stared riding motorcycles, I took my kids camping at Morrow Mountain NC. I hauled our bicycles to the top of the mountain (in a truck cause I am old) and my daughter and I rode them down. At some point on the trip down I realize I am going 40 mph on a $99 toys-r-us bike with squeeky brakes and my helmet is some cheap styrofoam thing that only covers the top of my head. This is about the point I look over at my bare arms and think "where is my kevlar jacket with pads in the elbows and shoulders." Its amazing how your perspective can change. | |||

OH YEAH!!! Are them roads really painted yellow in Arizona? hmmm, how do I attach saddle bags to one of them thar XB9 thingies? I hope Wycked feels up to driving the chase truck so I don't have to worry about it. It will be good to see you and Denise and the rest of the California crowd. The weather looks like it will be in our favor, it will still be a little chilly in the mountains, but no ice. (except in this cooler full of beer!)  Is it Thursday night yet???              | |||

I was convinced about wearing a helmet when I crashed my dirtbike abt 17 years ago, and the bike swung around and the axel bolt hit me in the side of the head.  It left a big hole in the side of the helmet, i thought that could be my head, ouch. | |||

As a long-time rider of limited skills, I have crash-tested a number of helmets, on pavement and on dirt. The first crash made a believer out of me. All the subsequent ones made me congratulate myself for my good taste in headgear! rt | |||

JB2… Hey Jim, I haven’t been on the BadWeb for a while. Just been too immersed in getting this little pee pot fishing boat ready to go to work. But I’ve recently exchanged a couple of emails with Blake, and that has gotten me to thinking about the Buell world a little bit. It also brought to mind that Cat piston with the valve stuck in the middle of its noggin that I sent to you, and you’re asking about the circumstances that led to its demise. The rainy season’s just getting started here on tropical Guam, and instead of the occasional three-minute downpours of the “dry season,” today is all overcast and soggy. I thought it would be a good time to take a few much-needed hours off, and tell you about that piston. As sometime happens when I sit down to the keyboard, my note to you got a little out of hand and turned into ten pages of embellishment before getting around to dropping that valve. But it does give a little glimpse of life at sea, driving a commercial dragger, and you might find it mildly interesting. I hope so. Rather than posting the whole mess here, or emailing it to you, I’ll just upload it with a link below.
I hope you’re doing ok, and getting to the place where you can relish the fond memories of your dad. As I’ve said before, I’m sorry I never got the chance to know him. I’m sure we would have become fast friends, with our common links to the sea. Capt. Pete |
