Good luck with this and sorry you got burned. It shouldn't be that way...ethics are something they no longer teach in school, |

lynrd, i can't even lie about the smallest things. This guy was twice my age, and i never would have thought, someone the age of my father, would be such a dirt bag. Sad thing is, i bought the bike in san jose, and thats where I'm going to have it fixed. anyways, time to be positive, pessimism is the job of my girlfriend. Lynrd, do you know of any cheap storage space in san jose? the bikes stored in richmond, but obviously won't have an engine in it for at least a month or so, and sense most of the work will be done that way, id rather not drive back and forth. |

I do NOT know of cheap storage space in San Jose, but only because I have not shopped for any. There are a bunch of storage places on San Carlos, not too far from San Jose BMW. My garage just got one too many projects in it or I'd just say stash it here. Oh - wait - yeah. Let me know when and I think I can stash it in my office at Tech Shop on Second if that works for you...just so long as it isn't there for more than a few weeks. |

Sam, if those bushings spun the cases may be toast. The reamer is for the ID to fit cams not to fit bushings to case. Had one like that and managed to put in early Sportster needle bearings. |

Firemanjim, I think spinning would be imminent in the future, but it wasn't quite there yet. The holes are fairly clean and the bushing still fits in there "tight" just not press tight. Regardless, the case isn't toast. The guy in san jose can make his own bushings for the same price you buy them from the factory. Very reputable business, and have heard great things about this place in san jose. |

lynrd, never heard of it. Hannans recommended "thunder crank works" . http://www.thunder-crank-works.com Hannans said they send anyone that needs lower end work to them. |

Ok, good to know - if Paul and crew recommend them, that's a strong endorsement. The shop I mentioned has been around for like a zillion years, and has a good reputation for working on olde HDs, About the only aftermarket shop I could think of off hand in SJ that might have those capabilities. |

I love the bay area, but i can't help but think that there are more places in oakland, san francisco that are much closer to me would would be willing to work on this bike. oh well. Ill do the drive for the service rather than take a gamble. |

The hot rod place for bottom end used to be Rich Products in Richmond. But if Hannans likes this place in SJ, then...well, that's good enough for me. |

My worry is, What else has monkey boy done to the motor ? |

Alfau, that is my concern as well. Especially since the only thing he disclosed was that he replaced the head gasket. The complete top end of the engine with jugs is being replaced to relieve my anxiety of that. The lower end is going to be split and inspected, I'm assuming I'll be advised to rebuild the bottom end, and replace a few cam bushings . I'll probably end up just swapping out the entire tranny, much easier than just replacing the shaft. |

Simply a section of an old drive belt tacked to a wooden wedge saves about $200 pluss for the necessary tool. And a shade tree. |

Not your bike but similar. this is a pretty good picture of the needle bearings that welding would have fried. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/463326.html |

Sorry you're having to go through all this. Your trans isn't affected by the welded shaft. You can remove the whole unit and just change the 5th gear set up. But while you have the trans out check the shift forks. I've been finding excess wear on some of them lately. |

Alfau, what an awesome idea! Has anyone swapped out the shaft and bearings? I know it would be easier to swap the whole unit, but if I could do it for less than 150 it might actually be worth it. |

And thanks for the heads up mcelhaney14. I'm thinking there was something wrong with the detent plate. The bike would be hard to shift into 5th, and when it got hot, it wouldn't go into 5th at all sometimes. |

Simply a section of an old drive belt tacked to a wooden wedge saves about $200 plus for the necessary tool. I'm lucky in having an air rattle gun and sockets large enough, but that is simply a brilliant solution. Rocket in England |

update: Jim called me back from the shop, and went back on his offer. Said he wouldn't be able to work the heads, even if they were his own he wouldn't. I fought the good fight, but this bike was so jacked, its going to take someone with a little more patience, and deeper pockets. I'd rather put the money towards my boat. Should I part out the entire motorcycle, or sell it whole? Twin seat in great condition, banke shifter, screaming eagle computer etc etc. (Message edited by sambodean on July 23, 2014) |
