brother in bulls, i couldn't find exactly what i wanted regarding camshafts so I'm still trying to do some research. Id like something i could basically bolt in and use the same pushrods and valve springs etc with. I pulled the cover off for the cam shafts just to make sure I'm giving hannans the right info, and to check everything out, and ran into a little issue.All the cams came out with the cover itself? and one of the bearings (looks like they have to be pressed in) came off with one of the cams, wtf? is this easy to fix? can't find too much information on reinstalling a new bearing.

im assuming I'm going to have to remove the entire engine now, and press a new bushing in....joy

The good news is, you're changing the cams anyway.

You'll need to determine if the bushing has been spinning in the case or not, and if so has it worn the case. If not you can hopefully insert a new bush but you'll need to know it's going to be a tight fit and not spin. Shouldn't take a great deal of ingenuity to press a new bush in, but maybe you should have your mechanic do it ; )

rocket, I have a press at work, but i have to remove the engine to use that...im hoping i can get by with another way. Hopefully it isn't too worn out in the case as well.. at least i caught it this early in the game.

You also have to ream the bushing to the correct size.
I think ,it's better to remove the engine and bring it to your mechanic and decide with him what is best.

Maybe I missed it, but do you have a copy of the FSM? Even I knew the cams will "fall-out" if you just remove the cover....

Brother in buells, just read up on it. page 3-45 explains the process, and since i don't have the bearing puller, or reamer, ill definitely be taking it to someone. The pinion shaft also requires a dowel pin after replacement, yet another thing i don't want to deal with. Kalali, most everything i've read said the cams would stay in, and of course, the occasional cam would slip out with the cover, but in my case, ALL the cams came out, and more importantly, one with the actual bushing attached. Ps, the manual says absolutely nothing about the gears coming out with the cover. step 7. place pan under, and remover cover. step 8, remove cam gears from engine, and mark.pg.3-43 from the service manual...

the service manual doesn't cover the "tricks" to get it done within the provided steps. I've had more than one "AH-HA" moment and thought, why doesn't the manual cover this little trick on how to accomplish the step...but then the manual would be 4 or 5 times as thick to cover every little trick. It helps to use the blade of a screwdriver if you can get it in the to help encourage the cams to stay in the motor as you pull the cover off...or so Ive been told, never used the trick as the motor is so easy to align the cams that it just didn't seem like something I was concerned about. of course I found out the hard way that the cams come out when you pull the cover. But once you're "forced" to learn how to align the cams its extremely easy. though I must say after doing this a few times I have never had a cam bushing come out with the cam.

The manual does show a nice picture on how to properly align he dots on the cams and which numbers are intake and exhaust for which cylinder.

a trick I have heard of instead of using a reamer to ensure free motion of a cam in a new bushing is to use valve lap compound and use the cam itself to work the bushing. the hardened cam will work the valve lap compound against the softer bushing material. AS THIS IS NOT THE DIRECTED PROCESS WITHIN THE MANUAL AND I HAVE NEVER TRIED THIS, CAN SOMEONE CHIME IN AS TO WHETHER THIS IS A SMART APPROACH/PROCESS TO CLEARANCE THE CAM IN THE BUSHING??

It happens to almost everyone once to also pull a cam with the cover!

The first oilpump drive gear i did ,all the cams stayed in place when pulling the cover ,second one the cover would not come off so tapped it with a nylon hammer and pulled harder ,it popped of and also one cam came with it ,not a real big deal but make sure to put it back in the right timing!

Thank all of you for the helpful information. Just pulled the engine out, and found another surprise. I'm really loving the guy that did work on this bike, and am quite pissed he didn't disclose all of his "modifications" he made. take a look at the chain "conversion" he made.

alfau,you're giving this bikes previous owner way too much credit. it looks like the monkey is using the wrench to tighten the bolt, instead of welding it with the improper settings and horrible weld patterns.

well, on a lighter note to this horrible excursion, I found a good deal on N8 cams. Thoughts on this? I was thinking the higher compression, and better flowing ported thunderstorm make it a perfect match. also, was wondering if anyone had a close up picture on the front pulley and splines with bolt. I grinded off the old pulley successfully, but a few threads have been damaged and ill have to rethread it. Yes, the engine will be torn apart, but if i can avoid replacing the tranny, i will.

Jack up the fuel tank cap and drive another bike underneath and use that piece junk for parts.
Or you could keep spending your money here.

I honestly never thought to hear that from people on this forum. Anyways, I've made some money on the old heads and jugs from this bike, so only a little has been spent. Hannans hit me with a quote that was way lower than i expected, and the tranny shaft looks like its going to have plenty of thread left. The entire bottom end is being sent to thunder crank works to be inspected, and the n8 cams with new bushings installed if everything goes right. I believe the end result will be worth the investment. Atleast the bike will get more use than my sailboat...

alfau, it is a little hard to hear, but I've accepted that fact, and have had my share of horrible investments. at least ill have a fun bike built the right way. Much better than a cheap deathtrap worked on by a jackass.anyone use n8 cams on here with their buell and thunderstorm heads?

I've seen that done on a dirtbike with stripped splines on the output shaft. In that circumstance, where the shaft is a solid piece of steel and is shot already, it makes a little more sense. Put on the sprocket, tack weld it into position, get another season out of the bike before splitting the cases.

But on a Buell, with that 5th gear drive assembly with internal needle bearings? Uh, No. Sorry to see that. Incredibly irresponsible to do, and immoral to not disclose when selling the bike.

reepicheep, THANK YOU. I'm considering seeing a therapist, for multiple reasons. Just to be clear, this bike is not an investment, it never was, but that doesn't soften the blow. Ultimately, when I'm done with the bike, and later on sell it for 1/3 of what i put into it, there will be another buell saved instead of being stripped naked and whored out, and whoever gets the bike won't be screwed over like i was...IF the internals are okay, if not, I'm selling her for 5 bucks a pop, love you long time.
