i average 38 after 3k miles.... normal? Highway commute 70 avg mph. cruise at 80 for most of it, but including lower speeds i'd say 70 avg.

i get mid 40's even when im riding hard. both the 9 and the 12

At 3k your engine may still be breaking in?
I average 52mpg during my 42 mile commute keeping it in between 4 to 4.5k rpm.

I'm at 1,600 miles and average 31mpg. I wish I got 38.

I have a 9 and am averaging about 41-43 by keeping revs at about 3800-4100.

8K and I'm getting 33 to 35 for commuting and when we go out on the weekend I'm getting 40 to 45. I think it's all the stop lights!

16K Miles and I am getting 52mpg, mixed commuting @65mph and some local roads at 40mph.

I don't think I have ever got below 45mpg, and I think my best was 62mpg.

I'd blame all these low mpg numbers on new engines. Most of you guys aren't done breaking them in by the manual's standards, and it'll actually break in more beyond that. Give it time. I'm hitting 51mpg consistently @ just over 10k miles on the odo. I spend 90% of my time running 65-75mph.

I would say that and the kind of fuel you put in if it got that ethanol in it you will loose some mpg

how many miles should be on the odo to be considered broken-in?

I don't buy the break in stuff. My bike had maybe 1500-2000 miles on it and I was able to get 66 mpg on one trip.

It has 7500 miles now, and on my way down to MBV I was getting 65 mpg on the one tank I checked. Copping around town I'll get 50-ish, maybe upper 40s.

If that's the case, then how do explain increasing mpg as the bike accumulates more miles for the majority of other riders?

Tolerances. If your bike is on the tight end of the tolerance scale, it'll take longer to break in, and vice versa. Yeah, we're only talking about hundredths or thousandths of an inch, but it's hundredths or thousandths of an inch of steel, it ain't like sanding pine. ; )

For what it worth, the XB9SX is getting a pretty consistent 48 MPG at this point.

I'm getting around 48 mpg ridding to work and home, mostly 75mph, with some 50mph, and stop lights.

Aerodynamic drag matters and can vary from rider to rider by a significant margin.

How large an area are you presenting to the airstream? Riding gear can also have a HUGE effect on aerodynamic drag. Tight fitting leathers contribute much less aerodynamic drag compared to over-sized textile type gear.

Heck yes when you have all your goodies flapping in the wind like ............. me, your gas mileage will suffer!

(In light of recent comments I will make no comment about tent makers that I use for my riding gear.)

But riding gear and "girth" can play havoc with your mileage. Hey I have a tank bag so I have another excuse for not tucking in ;+)

i'm 180 without gear, 5'11, so i dont think i present that much surface area. I do wear a textile jacket though, fits nicely though a little loose.

My textile jacket fits pretty loose as well. I prefer the leather jacket because it hugs me nice and tight, it also cools better. Imagine that.

03 xb9s around 50 mpg commuting and regular riding. 01 blast around 70 mpg same riding commuting and regular riding.

180 lbs. nekid

about 193-195 lbs. in gear (Aerostich one piece suit is hefty and isn't exactly aerodynamic)

add another 10 lbs. for all the crap I haul around.

average mpg= 44
95% back roads, 5% town.

I think the best I've gotten was 48mpg.

It seems to me from what I've read that the 08s get less mpg than previous years.
Might be due to changes inside engine and the new ecm's fueling maps. That's pretty much all I can come up with.

The other factor to consider is the length of your jaunts. I'm getting 38 avg / mixed city, highway and twisties on my Uly...but my runs (mostly to and from work) are usually under 50 miles each, sometimes under 25 miles.

If I take a tank-long ride, even with the same habits, that tank's mileage is way into the 40s.

My '08 XB12Ss has about 650 km on it now and it's averaging 35 mpg, mostly urban. Not impressed.
