"I think the world of motorcycling would truly lose something if Buells became just like every other bike."

Well said.

There are still ways to be unique and give us (OK, ME) what we (again, I) want.

Look at Ducati. 998 is liquid cooled, but would anyone mistake it for anything else? Dry clutch, low beefy note, super sexy...

Now look a the rest of their line. The SS and most of the monsters are air cooled.

The lil' bolt, even if it had a Suzuki engine, would still be unique. Here, look to the Raptor. Has anyone ever mistook one of those for a Suzukie? And that's just a styling job.

Yeah, I want a world beater. It's a pride thing.

Vik

So we really couldn't find a reason to make it water-cooled. Everything said, make it air-cooled. Now, MAYBE under optimum situations, you design an engine for racing.....etc

Looking at that tekst I read this:
He did not say WHEN, he said MAYBE. Even for these conditions he is not certain about the necessity for water-cooled.
But then again, I read things the Dutch way.

'cuz 'vettes are common as muck.

I did buy a watercooled Porsche though, making me a bit of an outcast in the Porsche world...

If Tinkerbelle came along and spritzed me with magic fairy dust while I was sitting on my bike:

1) I would have legs long enough to reach the ground and,

2) I would be sitting on a Y2K M2 that weighed 400 lbs. wet, had 100 RWHP, and wasn't glued together with blue Loctite.

I don't care very much about anything else, and I especially don't care which one of us figures out how to make it happen. I am concerned that it might happen outside of BMC, though.

There are two bikes on the horizon and two more a little further out that look promising and July 16th is just 15 days away. The KTM V2 and Triumph RS.S will be out in two years and if we cross our fingers and toes and wish real hard the Yamaha MT-01 and Suzuki B-King might actually happen. I’m really hoping for good news from the HD new model show on the 16th.

Some more recent quotes, without comment (I'll leave that to y'all}:

Quote:

From both a looks standpoint and a technical standpoint, it's an absolute state-of-the-art product. There's a lot of refinement in it, the helical stuff in the gearbox and all that. I think it's woken up a lot of people as to Harley's technical capabilities. It's like "Look what we can do with the handcuffs taken off!"

Erik Buell, speaking about the VROD, Cycle World, November 2001

A more recent, one, read this out loud with a French accent to get the full effect.

Quote:

How does Buell become a larger, more succesful player in the world market
We have to be honest and focused about what we are and who we are. We have to be creative and communicate our values. We know it's impossible to get everyone. We do however recognize the wants and needs of motorcycle enthusiasts throughout the world, and that different niches exists. We need to be humble and listen carefully to the customer. The Buell Motorcycle Company is currently designing and producing products for these niches and markets and will continue to do so in the future. We all dream of what is the perfect bike for us, but ultimately, the customer will decide what we build. If we do these things and do them well, our future will be very bright.

I guess we can chalk up another one for the "world beater" category!

(something I could give a rat's about ... if that makes you mad, tough)

The further outside the box you get, the MORE air cooling might make sense. Think of the future, alternate fuels and ceramic engines that don't need to shed heat, rather they use it for optimum efficiency. It will happen, might be a few decades or even centuries though. How about a near-zero inertia turbine engine. All the power and compactness of a turbine, but without the large flywheel effect.

All the car fires I've seen have been under the hoods of water cooled models.

I still think that the XB9R turbocharger idea warrants a LOT of consideration.

Gee, EB has a turbocharged Buell. :) Where the hell is that box anyway?

Turbo no, blower yes. Smaller, better, no lag.

Blower no, turbo yes. Aerochargers have no lag, better, costs no power to run

Hey I got the accent finally. I think I'll start using it for my own name.

Umm...The only problem I have with just throwing displacemnt at it is my insurance company charges by displacement.

I'd LOVE to see a turbo from the factory. The bike has enough torque that turbo lag wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Works for me

But I suspect the world-beater guys want competitive power at the same displacement, hence the water-cooling request.
