If we all do what authority tells us we would be wearing helmets, driving the speed limit, not pulling wheelies, not protesting in the street, not smoking cigarettes and, quite likely, not driving motorcycles or fast cars as authority -- whether in liberal or conservative guise -- exists to restrict our freedom to choose and supplant instead, their wisdom for our choice.
And when authority goes overboard, which it often does, compliance does not effect change. |

We all assume a certain degree of freedom curtailment for the good of the whole.
This is why we have zoning laws. I can't put a Camaro on blocks in my front yard because of the detrimental effect it has on my neighbors.
We can't run 120mph on city streets through school zones because it causes an unsafe situation for others.
We can't burn trash in a barrel in our back yard because of the detrimental impact it has on local air quality.
This is the nature of modern societies. Change isn't always good. I would expect that lack of compliance with societal requirements would be met with the force necessary to create compliance without causing permanent damage.
I think we have seen that here for the most part (just don't jack with a hungry Corporal on Thanksgiving). |
