Maggie, if you want to know about high mileage contact Jprovo (see above posts) privately. He's got at least 45,000 on his and he's been cross country (well Milwaukee anyway).

Thanks for all the information. So far that motor has just been awesome. No oil leaks, no weird sounds, not missing, no smoke(knock on wood). Maybe I should paint it energizer pink?

I sent Jprovo a message while back but did not hear back. Glad to hear his is still clicking off the miles.

A question for the long distance Blast riders. Do you carry extra gas out west? I am planning to ride out and visit some friends, but there are 2 stretches with 134 and 140 miles between gas stations. That would have me running dry and possibly walking a couple miles. Am thinking of carrying a gallon can on my rear rack.

Trying to get the logistics figured out in the winter and the schedule in the summer.

PS. Anyone broken 100k miles yet? I just noticed that we have all the digits for over 100k on the speedo. (There now it fits the topic better)

Carry a 1/2 gal - should take you to a station - I also will have to plan better now that gasahol is a part of life in Cali.

Carry gas! I think a gallon can is small enough and big enough. IronButt riders and their ilk use auxiliary gas tanks and they come in a variety of ways, but I am not familiar with them.

Theoretically you should have enough gas to get to the next station, but the ride will suck while worrying about it.
Years ago when riding through Montana I planned a gas stop halfway between a 200 mile stretch. It was closed. I barely made it the distance to the next stop some 80+ miles later. A fun story to tell now, It wasnt so much fun at the time.

Alternate way to carry liquids:

Get a 16 or 20oz plastic soda/water bottle, squeeze some air out and cap it. Squeeze and twist it up, working against the air pressure inside, until the stiff parts (especially the bottom) are made flexible.

You now have a soft flexible liquids container that can be packed into whatever space is available, like under the seat, in a tank bag, wherever. After filling, squeeze all the air out before capping. It's high-altitude and squeeze resistant, and also ultra convenient since you can just trash it when done with it, and stop and get a new one whenever you're thirsty.

2-liter bottles work too, or several small ones tucked here & there.

This technique shouldn't be used to smuggle booze into places where it isn't allowed - it would work, but don't do it... I said DON'T do it!

Hey EZ - rolled over 51,000 today on my way home to Florida from Texas. That little baby ran like a champ the whole way.

Rode the Three Sisters in Hill Country around Leakey, Texas. Started to have a little problem shifting into neutral. Thumper (my husband, for real) adjusted the clutch and all was well.

Already wishing that home was not so close!

Texas ranch roads rock.

I have completed an Iron Butt, Tampa to St. Louis, MO (1,000 mi) in 23 hours to qualify for membership. I was not on the Blast, but I'm proud of the accomplishment and wear wear the sticker with pride on my Blast.

During my trip to Maine last year we did ride several 500 - 600 mile days in a row, but for IBA you must pre-qualify your entry runs with before and after certifications, which we did not organize ourselves to do.

Now that I am over that imaginary "hump" I had in my brain (making it past the 50,000 mark) I feel like that bike can do anything. And so the next level of Iron Butt, a 1,500 miler could be in her future.

Anytime I ride my summer journeys, which cover 3500 to 4500 mile trips in 2-3 weeks, my butt feels like it should be made of iron!

This Texas journey was 2 weeks, 3500 miles which was an easy trip for us. Already planning the next escape...

BTW - 30,000 miles may be lost, but certainly not forgotten!
