Just purchased a 2001 Buell X1 Lightning, with just under 8,000 miles on it. After riding/working on many old Hondas, I'm very excited for this new addition. I am a DoTheTon member so I hope this forum can help me out as much as that one did!
So expect a lot of questions coming from me soon, as I start working on this sucker

Welcome to the board! You have a nice looking X1 there. At 8000 miles it's practically new. What are you plans for it?

Looks nice I see a few tasteful upgrades seat, undertank panels, air cleaner.
You will find this forum massively full of info and opinions! Google search issues will ussually be a cleaner search function and give you links right back here but I have had success in the search area here. Check the knowledge vault also lots of info.
Welcome aboard the bike will be awesome but it will require help from you.
Also let me be the first to say get a factory service manual it is a must!

Careful how you tied it down:

d

The tiedown circled in orange is not as strong as you think it is. That part of the frame is removable and holds the rubber isolator.

In the future, I would suggest using the upper area circled in blue for that purpose.

Cool thanks guys! My future plans will be a flat track looking buell, with either XB wheels or the sportster 10/13 mag wheels, with a number plate fairing and dual headlight setup. And a big fabrication to the tail section to try and get rid of that big ugly clunkiness. But thanks for the heads up Nate, that's actually weaved through both of those, and isn't really that tight, all the weight was being wrenched down in the front.

There are a few folks who have made tube tail sections to replace the cast X1 part, with very good results.

Case in point:

If anyone can talk purpony or someone else to make a tail section, I'm down for one also!

I will be painting mine black for now, just sticks out like a sore thumb! I'm going to try and find a local guy to take some measurements of the 2 bolt on spots and try and make me something. I want to go with more of a flat track/cafe look with not much pointing upwards.
