damn no fails so figuring this out is gonna take longer than I thought, of course that also means it's probably not my speedo or sensor either. Just a ground gremlin....

I don't recommend that anyone actually try this but, this is how I used to find elusive shorts in my Triumph TR8? This thing had so many electrical gremlins it had me chasing my tail and pulling my hair out! In the end I found a sure fire way to find a short. I'd touch a fuse sized hunk-o-metal to the fuse holder or run a heavy wire across the fuse terminals then follow the smoke, when the smoke cleared I'd replace the wire (or component) that melted, problem solved. Again; I don't recommend this procedure, but when all else failed.. it was crude but it worked.

that was kinda how I originally thought it was the key switch because when I put a 15A in a 7.5A slot it blew the Key switch fuse....I'm off the bike for a week or so while I wait for a new drive belt (it snapped today) so I'll have plenty of time to chase wires

Erik at this point I'm not sure that it's related to the speedo it could be related to the tail light which is also on that circut....I'll tear into it on sunday when I have nothing better to do. But thank you if it turns out that it is indeed one of those things I will get in touch with you

nothing yet...knock on wood....I haven't had a problem since I got the bike back on the road with a new Belt...I'm sure it'll go out again and then I'll actually spend some time working on it

Well near as I can tell the problems I had with Speedometer were ground related...finding that ground proved to be annoyingly difficult. well until my turn signal "Flasher" went dead....hind site being 20-20 every time I blew a fuse, I noticed it was recently after making a turn. Proving this on paper seems to be nigh impossible but with no blown fuses in the last few weeks I'm gonna go on the premise the "Flasher Relay" was the cause especially since every turn signal bulb on the bike blew right before the flasher quit. Electricity is odd sometimes.................

Xgecko, sounds like you got it. Hey, what does a flasher relay cost?

$9.75 from my neighbor's motorcycle shop...when I took apart the Flasher the circuit board had a bunch of corrosion on it. I'm guessing my 4 hour ride in Biblical rains last July in the Berkshires probably contributed to that.

well I replaced a bunch of other things. the tail light lens was cracked and let water into the bulb assembly....that wasn't the problem, I took the ignition switch apart and cleaned it (not it) chased every wire on the circuit (so not something I would recommend doing ever) finally decided that I had put forth enough TS effort that changing the Speedometer was justified...found one on Fleabay for $30 with 4K miles on it...poof no more blown fuses (knock on wood) for a full tank of gas. Anyone know how to add milage to an Odometer without doing the actual miles? I just lost at least 23,000 miles and change.

ok, i am a bit confused with all the sensor talk.

i have a 2000 blast with only 2500 miles and the speedo stopped working. i assume it is the original one as i bought the bike used. i removed it and cleaned it, no joy. i checked at the local dealer and they do not have one in stock and quoted me around 53.00 for p/n 74402-95B.

is this what i need? was there ever a recall? i had the service dept check my vin and they said the pulley recall was performed and that was all that was flagged on this bike.

does anyone have a diagram of the sensor itself and how to check it off the bike?

thanks

thanks EZ, i don't remember seeing that second one in my 2000 manual. i'll have to see if it is there. does the diagnostic test (holding the reset button when turning the key on) work on the 2000 models?

ok, i did the on board diagnostic...no failures noted.

has anyone had any luck bench testing the sensor off the bike?

i cannot perform the above tests without the specialized tools.

someone explain if the 07 sensor will work, and what exactly the rewiring kit is and what it does exactly and if it is included in the pulley recall.

i have seen at least 2 different p/ns for a sensor and then the p/n for the rewire kit???? what do i need????

Yes the 07 is the updated/upgraded part and will work - just plug and play!
