Hey guys,

Sometimes when I go to start my bike, I hit the start button, and the starter cranks once for a split second, stops, and then, fires up the bike. Its like its having a hard time turning the motor that first crank.

Anyone else have this? Is this normal? Seems to do it worse when shes hot, and Im restarting her after putting some gas in..

Mine's been doing that since Day 1 when hot.

Is yours an '06? Is it a pinger?

Mine has always done it, cold or hot. Seems to be ignition advance/engine position related. Every once in a while it spins quickly and starts easier, like it was starting to turn from just past tdc compression instead of just before. Some have attributed it to a loose battery cable caused by a too-long screw, but that's not the case with mine. When shut off, a 4stroke engine tends to stop each time within a few degrees of the same spot almost every time. Especially true with singles and twins.

Mine did it when I had a marginal battery. They said it wasn't bad by factory standards so I bought a new one myself. I also checked the terminal connections. There are several posts here that suggest adding another washer if the connector is not tight. Mine needed the extra washer to get a good connection.

There have been several discussions about the high compression ratio of the 06 Uly's. I believe it is lower on the 08's.

My ultimate fix was the 07 airbox, and Buell race ECM and pipe. The pipe decreased the back pressure and the bike turns over easily every time now no matter what temp.

Yes and yes. I always thought it was compression lock.

Yes its an 06 and a pinger : ) Having said that, by Old XB12S was an 04 and was exactly the same pinger : )

It may very well be a timing issue. I know that the new right side cam cover and the new CPS(crankshaft) is indirectly due to my numerous timing threads in the past. Well Buell won out. The score is Buell-1 and Davo-none. I sold mine last Spring but I do miss it. The cranking issue and the pinging issue are related. The fix is the same as well, retard the timing.

Mine has always done that. Made me wonder if it was the battery. Connections were good. Started keeping the bike on the tender when in the garage. This bike doesn't ping. [except stuck in stop and go traffic for 40 min, at 100 degrees once]
Still when it's warm, it's slow to turn for the first turn. Sounds as if the first compression stroke is going to over power the starter motor.
Starter resistance changes inside a starter motor when it's warm. I just chalked it up to that.
My Uly starts every time and fires right off in any case. No worries.
Just my .5 cents.

It may not make you feel any better, but my '99 Ducati ST2 did about the same thing, but always started.
I have not noticed it as much on my '06 Uly.
Then again, after 6,500 miles I just noticed pinging for the first time yesterday, when I rode a short stretch late in a 300 mile day without my usual earplugs.
It was not horrible, but it was noticeable when starting out or rolling on the throttle in a high gear. I was in the E TN/W NC mountains, so temps were 70-85F and altitude 2000-5000 ft.
I am totally stock '06 running major brand 93 pump gas

Mine is an '06 and has the cranking issue but not the pinging issue. I placed the washer on the battery terminals, but that did not help. Even leaving the bike on a battery tender has not helped.

If it is a compression issue, I wonder why my bike does not ping.

The static timing on 06 and 07 bikes has a great deal to do with these issues. It is a combination of fuel grade, timing, compression and temperature that determines whether an engine will ping. Fuel grade and timing are variables which can be changed easily. Your bike is timed well for your conditions if you are not experiencing engine pinging. The 08 bikes timing cannot be altered without software. It will be interesting to watch this board next summer and see how the 12 engines respond to the fixed static timing.

sounds like overly advanced timing to me. my old kickstart xlch would experience a similar symptom. this was due to the fact that i removed the retarding device when i installed my morris magneto. you had to really kick that thing, especially when hot. once she started though the fun began.

My '88 Sportster used to do the same thing once in a while. I asked a dealer tech. about it once and showed it to him. He said "It's a Harley, they all do that."

I think it is because V-twins tend to coast to a stop as a piston comes up against compression. So the crank is barely moving when it encounters compression again. The second time around the inertia of the crank moves it on through.

You can test the theory by putting the bike in low or 2nd gear and rolling it back until you feel it is against compression. Then put it in neutral and start it.

I did that with my M2 a few times because I noticed the slow initial turn when I first got it. And it never happened when I rolled it back first. My M2 never failed to start easily, slow first turn or not, so I quit worrying about it.
