Well, I've owned my Ulysses for almost 3 weeks. And today, when I got off work and started up the bike...the windscreen fell off. I was in complete shock...can you imagine? As I picked up the windscreen from the ground, you can clearly see that both of the lower connections broke off with the bolts still screwed in. Has anyone encountered a problem like this??? |

Yes,recall 0837 Buell Distribution Company, LLC. has determined that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists on certain 2008 & 2009 model year XB12XT and 2009 model year XB12XP model motorcycles built October 9, 2007 through September 16, 2008. The windshields on these model motorcycles, built during the above date range and mounted with a rubber-mounted nut part number M0251.1AV, may become dislodged and allow the windshield to either strike or distract the rider while the vehicle is being ridden at high speed. This could result in a crash, which could cause injury or death to the rider. |

Were the nuts ripped out of the rubber? If so, they were probably overtightened. |

From what I can tell, the two lower rubber pieces that attach to the flyscreen broke off from behind the flyscreen, allowing the rubber pieces to stay attached to the windscreen and separate from the flyscreen, which caused it to fall to the ground. I would really like to know the fix for the recall, especially since my bike falls into that category, and the replacement part number if possible. Either way, the dealership is going to hear about this. |

The original optional X Tall Shield was recalled and fixed with these. The lower pins apparently were pulling out from the flyscreen and zingo went the shield. Why Buell went to those captive nut things in the XT's is only conjecture but I'm glad to see they re-addressed the issue so quickly. |

Groundpounder, The lower mounts on my XT broke that way also because I had overtightened them and ripped the captive nuts out of the rubber expansion "plug". A temp (or permanent if you wish) fix is to disassemble the unit and insert a 1/4" fender washer between the torn out nut and the rubber portion. Mine broke well before the recall so I ordered new mounts same as the original. The key to preventing this is to install the unit in the windshield with the bolt drawn up just until it contacts the "washer" on the front of the windshield. Install the mounts through the flyscreen and tighten up 8 turns only. (It's all in the owners manual) I have not had a problem since I started doing this. What I don't like about the replacement system is that it appears that you have to remove the flyscreen in order to separate the windshield for cleaning. Correct me if I'm wrong... |

Does anyone know the date recall 0837 was issued? Want to ensure I have all of the facts before I contact the dealership. Rwen - if the attaching hardware was over tightened, then the dealership did it when they detailed the bike and removed the windscreen to clean the flyscreen. Like I mentioned earlier, I've only owned the bike for 2 and a half weeks. Also, it appears that if I wanted to go with the shorter windscreen, I would need different mounting hardware? Part numbers for the shorter windscreen and attaching hardware anyone? |

The tall hardware will fit if you enlarge the lower mounting holes in the short windscreen. I used a step drill to do mine. |

Buy a zero gravity screen. That's what I did after my tall screen flew off and hit me in the helmet after about 1k miles. Dealer wouldn't even consider ordering another one under warranty unless I left the bike at his shop. Claimed I might not come back to have the new screen installed and he would be stuck with it. He stated the entire process would only take 3 weeks. This was for a windscreen mind you. When I called Buell CS to see if they could ship a screen to the dealer without all the BS, I was lectured on how dealers are routinely stuck with parts that customers fail to return to pickup. Told me dealers are independents and I would have to abide by their rules. Needless to say, I placed an order with Al at American Sport Bike that very day. Glad to see after two years they have this problem under control. |

Wow Dirt that is bull, the short windscreen flew off my bike last year, I stopped into my dealer, the service writer ordered one up. I stopped in like a week later, it was in, they walked out with it, stuck it in and wished me better luck with this one. I still got it too this day, even after the wrecked bike was taken away |

Well, I contacted the dealership where I bought the bike and according to them, the recall came out the day after I rode away from the dealership. Funny how they never mentioned it, especially since I have been in contact with them several times since buying the bike. Anyway, they claim the recall kit is not available yet. They also said that any dealership could do the recall. So I called the nearest Buell dealership which is 45 miles away and they were clueless. They knew nothing about the recall, claiming this was the first they heard about any recall regarding a windscreen. Then, they told me to check back in week to see if they had received anything regarding a recall. So, now I'm left wondering how some dealers have kits dated in '06??? |

Groundpounder, The first recall for the tall windscreen came out in July or August of 06. I purchased my bike in Feb 07 with the screen already installed. I found out later (after mine had blown off) that the dealer had never replaced the original fasteners with the ones in the recall kit. In 2008 (I believe) Buell changed the fastener set once again for the XT models. The latest recall applies to these screens and possibly the others as well. I'm not sure because I don't have mine any longer. I like the zero gravity. |
