Here's the latest from Buell; "Buell Distribution Company, LLC. has determined that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists on certain 2008 & 2009 model year XB12XT and 2009 model year XB12XP model motorcycles built October 9, 2007 through September 16, 2008. The windshields on these model motorcycles, built during the above date range and mounted with a rubber-mounted nut part number M0251.1AV, may become dislodged and allow the windshield to either strike or distract the rider while the vehicle is being ridden at high speed. This could result in a crash, which could cause injury or death to the rider. We have voluntarily declared this a defect related to motor vehicle safety (Campaign 0837) to allow us to formally recall all affected motorcycles. The remedy of this defect is to remove the windshield’s two rubber mounted nuts and install two new fastener assemblies. A service bulletin outlining the repair and credit procedure will follow within two weeks. Based on the schedule our supplier has provided we expect to begin shipping our first wave of repair kits, on or before the week of October 27, 2008." Just to avoid confusion, it looks like this is the "Tall" windshield thats standard on XP and XT, not the short one thats stock on XB12X. I am curious about this, because they switched to the nut and bolt system because windshields were flying off. Can't wait to see the new setup  | ||

Froggy, those bolts on the bottom do not go to a nut and washer, they go into wellnuts...and I know from personal experience that they can rattle loose and come out quite easily. | ||

Mine was loose on the showroom floor in August! From what I read here, I had them fix it before I rolled out of the showroom. I don't think they did more than loctite at the time though. It's been solid, but I didn't dare take it loose for cleaning. | ||

Perfect. I just stripped one of my rubber nuts. Went to the local dealer and ordered a replacement. They called and said it wasn't available anymore and that I had to order some package with 12 parts which they had no idea what it was. Instead they offered to find the part at another dealer and have it shipped. So cost me $7 + 9$ shipping for a part that is now recalled and will be replaced for free. That explains why it wasn't available when they ordered it. Would think they would have known that. Oh well. | ||

you can get wellnuts at any decent vardware store. The longer I own a bike, the more true-value/home depot it becomes My ironhead is pretty much all various autoparts and hardware store by now. |
