I had an oil pump drive gear go on a 2001 Blast. I have seen other posts of XB series having bad oil pump drive gears.

I have test rode a xb9 and xb12scg, liked the 9 better, even if it was a little tall for me, it is a question of reliability now.

I hear ya loud & clear on the reliability. It doesnt matter how good the product or reputation is, if the last one you owned was a P.O.C., then you're not likely going to buy another one.
The only way I'll buy another new Ford is if it has a really good warranty.

I've always had good luck with new HD products, its when I buy used the problems start.

My AVONs came in the mail finally~! woooo. My dad is skeptical about them fitting correctly but oh well, I trust this place... by the end of next week I plan to have my new bars and wheels on. Now to just save up for some rearsets.. then after that some engine work... then maybe I shou-----......

Checked my jetting today...had a 45/165! Upgraded to a 45/175, fiddled with the mix screw, runs much better now. Still have to find a way to set a proper idle speed, as I can't measure the rpm yet...

Putting in the 175 main made a huge diffrence in the engine. much smoother, less noise from the exhaust, and went down the road just a bit easier...Pulled the front end up in first...(full pro series setup, no headwork yet)

I GOTTA get some headwork and a performance ignition....

Dr - so whispers the dark side....Hehehehe...

Rockbiter - try a 48 primary - lol - I Know that jet is at 14 plus at 45 and the 48 would probably be the safer bet - I'm doing it this weekend myself on both and 180 for the main on the red.

Drfeelgood,
When you put the Avons on the front, it helps to have two or more people to help squeeze the tire bead into the rim while putting the tire on. The front tire is real tight...

I am in a little town called Lake Linden in the Keewana Pennsula, check it out on Mapquest, its in the middle of the fresh water ocean called Lake Superior. Just got back from the town pub, I put on every Nickle Back song on the jutebox, I am now best friends with the next mayor of Lake Linden and the present mayors girl friend. I guess you just have to be here to understand....

It is very unkind up here as the weather is sunshine and 70, but 3 months from now all hell breaks loose and for 9 months it is uninhabitable to ride, its just a taste of what it could be for a full 12 months if you lived in another hemisphere, they just don't know up here, they are just being teased by mother nature as how paradise is supposed to be.

Some thoughts:
A too rich carb mixture is safer than a too lean carb mixture, if you have a choice on which to err.
Too rich a mixture will quiet exhaust noise.
Having to run a carb rich is a telltale sign of other possible problems. (IE if you have to continually richen the mixture, whats changing?).
A better engineered, tuned and performing engine generally can use a leaner mixture (in short because its more fuel efficient).

yes well I'm going back to a 175 main for the summer (ran 180 most of the cold season) my mileage took a dive the last few tanks of warm weather riding from 72ish to 62ish....I think I'm gonna try leaving the 48slow though and I have a needle and shims to put in this weekend

Yes, but if a cracked boot shuts you down instead of high rpms at idle then your too lean, and the primary for intake and exhaust aftermarket at 45 is too lean. Also if you have a high performance exhaust - 180 may help there - will let you know on that - Tony - how was performance with the 180?

so do you guys recommend changing the jets at all while still stock on a 01? i just did new rocker box gaskets, new clutch cable (noticed there were 2 whole strands still holding!)and now that thats back together i was able to see that the seal behind the timing cover seems to be leaking also. great i wish it didnt have so much leaking going on and i could have seen it before i had the top off and fixed that. oh well, i should be able to change it with out taking the cam cover off unless it wants to be a real pain.

I am having a shop put them on, I already moved the shock tab outta the way with a hammer, my only question now is since they arent stock size what air pressure goes in there?

*Metzler* says thier tires have the highest milage at their rated maximum pressure as labled on the sidewall. I'd say anywhere between the stock pressure and the sidewall max will work...lower pressure will give better traction, higher pressure will give better milage, there is a happy medium in there somewhere

EZ; in the winter (OK Temps below 40 degrees) a 180 main is great all hesitation from low to mid RPM's on a cold bike is gone. In addition it pulled well and never stuttered. I still don't notice and issues now except that my gas mileage has taken a nose dive since the temps have been above 40 degrees the last 3 tanks. For me 40 degrees seems to be the cut off for jetting, so that's when I'll rejet. BTW I didn't get to the B50 cam this year so thats just with the WB (21disks) and my intake. The WB is also gonna end up as my winter exhaust as soon as I get the Jardine silencer and my ceramic coated header in. Rejeting and a new needle (shimmed) will happen this weekend when my dad and I work on motorcycles together.

no rice....rejetting is is useful for any
Blast...45/170 at least.

DrFeelgood: Use stock pressure and go from there. EZ says 30.5psi and I would agree with that!
Running rated maximum tire pressure, while giving great tire mileage and improved acceleration, is very dangerous. It greatly reduces traction while reducing friction! The rear will lock up with the slightest tap of the brake pedal.

NoRice: change the main to a 170 if not already done so. If your engine is bone stock, besides going to the 170, you can leave it alone unless you are experiencing minor running problems. Then it certainly helps to tune the carb in.
Bikes running in higher altitudes may benefit from a leaner mixture as the recommendations here are guidelines only, they certainly cant cover every environment the Blast will be run in ! (see the carb section)

Also the cam cover is easy to R & R. Consider updating the oil pump drive gear too!

EZ: I hardly think waiting until the boot fails is the right time to find out if its running too rich or too lean!
Why the big push to richen up the mixture all of a sudden? Has there been this sudden mass Blast engine failure due to lean running? A slow jet jump from 42 to 48 is HUGE. A rich mixture works well in the colder weather because the bike doesnt warm up to optimum operating temperature.
If you've changed to a piston that better matches the cylinder head, you should need a leaner mixture.
Running a rich set up can give the illusion of better acceleration since you're already running rich, you dont need the extra gas when opening up the throttle (substitution for an accel pump). But for constant rpm running, its too rich, killing mpg and washing the cylinder hone away.
Someone running a stepped 1/1/2" stock or Pro Series exhaust can't deal with a rich mixture as someone running an open 1 3/4" WB (or similar) exhaust would.

Jetting change beyond a couple of sizes should be closely looked at. I'd have to ask why? (riding style, engine modifications or problems, environment, etc.)

No Rice - I would change the primary to 45 - and the main to the current stock 170 jet for a stock bike.

Actually a lot of my jetting knowledge is from my various dynos and my observations - hardly a rush - over a year to decide I was still running pretty lean over - all.

My recommendation these days would be:

Stock - 45/170

Exhaust change only - 45/175

Exhaust and intake - 48/180

All at sea level - at above 3500ft. I would have a different answer.

I'd also recommend an Irridium plug - especially the racing - for a more complete burn - you'll instantly notice the difference.

My black bike is a totally different story - lol - it runs between 13 and 12 AF - and does very well there with a jetting of 45/155 with the Dial-A-Jet set at minimum.

The plug is light tan on the red and dk brown on the Black - fine with me - no moisture or black showing.

Always 30.5 front and rear - for max stickiness and a more balanced ride. If I was racing - I'd probably go down a pound more - and Battletrax - probably 2 lbs more - lol

Oh Mighty Blastoids of Great Knowledge, I have screwed up and need your advice: My 2003 just turned 2,030 miles. Unfortunately, I have NOT YET had my 1,000 mile service. It was cold and then it got warm and I drive to work every day and I keep the Odo on trip to know when to fill up and ....... I @#$%ed up. Am I going to blow it up if I drive another couple hundred before taking it 70 freeway miles to the dealer? I have two pairs of pliers, vice grips and a 3/4 box end wrench and little ability to do much more than change oil.

How tough is this sucker and should I put it on the side stand and ride the cage until I can get it over the mountain to the Buell boys?

Phew! That's a load of my mind. It's running great, uses no oil and little gas, but when the speedo started reading funny (dirty sending unit, I assume) and it made a strange vibration (it's hard to know when a new vibration shows up because there are so many) I checked my mileage and when "oh gosh!" The Owners Manual made it sound like failure to get the 1,000 mile on time would be result in utter destruction.

EZ: I just think the 48/180 jetting is just bad advice, but I wont argue with your research (its your bike not mine and I havent run it).
I've found that even the 175 is a little fat. If all you're doing is running the bike up to redline you can afford to go rich, but for consistent running at the lower rpms, you may be killing mpg and the engine.
It may also be that your stack set up is optimum airflow, so maybe you can go a little richer.

Willow Springs racetrack is at 2500ft and the 45/175 is way too rich.(yes, talking about the streetBlast).

I run my bikes between 3500 and 6500 - pretty constantly at the higher end - I have the B50 cam as well - the 180 may or may not be too rich I'll know almost right away whether it is right for the red bike - it would probably drown the weak after-market exhausts out there - the Pro-series, the V&H, the Kerker - but the 48 is dead on all the Hi-po units since all the WB/Jardine, Force, and D&D need to be dialed out to 3 plus to get rid of all decel. popping. On a dyno where on the AF scale does the 45 (the 45 is at 14 plus and 175 at 13.5 and above) and 175 put you on the street bike - find out -
