1750 miles. Bike had sat when I purchased. Had carb cleaned and boot replaced. Ran like a champ....for a short time. Then backfired really loud when I parked it in the garage after riding...never started again. Took it back to the shop and they screwed up my throttle so now I have cruise control and found out the backfire blew the boot off the carb. They reattached boot to carb. Last ride the electronics went crazy..lights flickered, speedometer spun completely around, bike sputtered and acted as though it was cutting off. I pulled over and continued to try to give it some fuel...finally picked back up and made it home safely. PEriodically it continues to sputter like it's going to cut out and then picks back p. Just recently I pushed it over a mile home because it finally left me on the side of the road and would not restart or pick back up. Friend looked at it and the screw top on the spark plug resistor came loose and the plug wire was barely hanging on to the plug. Replaced the spark plug and reconnected...the bike is still sputtering and misfiring after it warms up. I'm scared to get stranded. I am getting really frustrated and ready to say screw it!! What is wrong with my bike!!!Any ideas?

New battery needed and sounds also like a loose ground, also replace plug wire - sounds faulty - make sure plug isn't fouled.

Sounds possessed to me!

An exorcism may be in order.

Welcome Hrz7478!
Pardon the humor, we really are here to help.
Check/replace the spark plug and check the intake boot.
You have a bike thats been sitting and just like most bikes that have been sitting, you may have some bugs to work out. 1750 miles is nothing for mileage, practically brand new.
Sounds like you need to find a new shop too: (

Again, please dont be discouraged. If you ditch the Blast and buy another used bike, you may have different problems to sort through, but problems just the same.
The gas tank vent line (or rollover valve) may be clogged. The slow jet may be clogged. You might also have a bad ignition module.
But check the immediately obvious items first, spark plug and boot.

OK.....went and bought a brand new battery and couldn't wait to get home and try it out!! Not the problem. Looked at the boot again and the first shop that fixed it may have made up their own boot because it was off the carb again...causing the bike to suck air. Where can I buy a 2002 Blast factory boot? It's worth a try again to try that before I sink any more $$$

Yes - believe me when I say you needed the battery though, when the gauge needle starts spinning, its a sign the battery is dieing. You can get the boot at Chicago HD - it takes little time to change out - just unbolt the bolts, and screw holding the airbox to the motor, loosen boot clamps, pull carb/airbox off boot as a unit, remove old boot, put clamps on new boot, put on new boot, tighten clamp to intake manifold, put carb/airbox back on boot - make sure carb is perpendicular to ground and intake neck is totally in boot - tighten clamp, blue locktite bolts and screw and reconnect to motor - its that simple, and even more so with an aftermarket intake - lol

Chicago HD is where I get mine, however, our sponsors sell them as well and you can get a BADWEB discount with the majority of them.

Found the boot on IronMachine.com and I went ahead and ordered a new plug and plug wire just to be on the safe side. When the boot is put on, is there a certain type of torque or spec as far as tightening?

Also..thanks to all who have commented...even the humor. It has helped to keep me sane until the Blast rides again!

Just tighten them till they are solidly firm - you could keep tightening but then you are cutting into the rubber and defeating your purpose.

Yes, tighten the clamp just enough, but no too much. LOL!

Its a lot like tightening a radiator hose. If you start to mushroom the boot, thats too tight. Using 2 hands-too tight.

DO NOT use any kind of sealer or lubrication!

Glad you mentioned no lubricant because I read that lubricant would help when putting the manifold on ???

And in turn hasten the carb coming off!

I dont know where you read that, but its completely wrong. There isnt any reason you should have trouble getting the manifold on. The carb and manifold 'lock' into place, but its certainly not that tight a fit.

I need more help!!

The parts arrived today and I had them put on. Come to find out the first shop that "fixed" my bike, rigged a manifold coupler...it did not fit properly which I could see when I got the factory one today. Very excited to get her running again...replaced that, plug wire, and plug..plus a new battery. She's got to run!! First try, she fired right up!! I took her for a ride and within the first mile my speedometer went wacky again. The bike runs great but the speedometer flickered on and off again and now the needle stays at 45 in idle position. I have to do math while riding to see how fast I'm going. So it is kind of freaky when the speedometer says 90 and really I'm going 45. Any ideas? I rode my bike for a good hour and it ran great but the speedometer is spooked out now.

I'm going on vacation next week and really wanted to take my bike with me...should I trust it?

Wow - maybe your speedo is going south - wow - very rare - usually it is the sensor - which it also could be - try wiping off the sensor - enjoy the bike and replace the speedo at your leisure - just stay at the speed of traffic or just a bit above it and you'll be fine.

Unfreakin believable. I'm on vacation now and went through the trouble of borrowing a trailer to haul and ride my bike....I rode ten damn miles and my bike sputtered, the speedometer spun around and electronics went out on three separate occasions...I had to put the bike back on the trailer. Now I am pissed and puzzled. The bike ran fine since the parts were replaced but the electronics are throwing a fit. The bike pretty much cuts off and then suddenly comes back alive. This doesn't make sense. The bike is practically new. Any other tips or ideas? It would have been an awesome bike ride down the coast line.

Hrz7478,
You need to check ALL of your battery connections, and all wire loom connections. Do your lights go off when this happens? If so check up by your ignition switch. Pull your tank off and your air box off and get in there and wiggle things around looking for places where wire shielding is worn off or it looks like the wire covering is streached. It can be infuriating but take it slow and simple.
