A recall has a safety or rideability concern; ie. legal liability.

Product notices are because they're trying to do the right thing, even if what they're replacing isn't going to pitch you off the bike and cause death or dismemberment.

No, those are the technical definitions, but you get the idea.

Two branches of the same dealership, one has good customer service, the other, well lets
just say I will never darken their door.

I've noticed the same thing; I go straight to the downtown one now even though it's out of the way.

yeah, but since I'm in North Clairemont I had to try the Kearney Mesa branch first, it's
practically just around the corner. Is "New York Myke" still running the show at San Diego
Harley/Buell? If so I'll have to give him a shout.

I called Buell CS today. My 07 9R is not listed on the service bulletin. Spoke to Roxanne, told her I have almost 14k (she enjoyed that info), the light output is disappointing and the low beam looks black compared to the high. She put me on hold for a few minutes, came back on the line and told me, "The Buell Expert said to have a dealer look at it, and if the material is degrading, they will be more then happy to do what they can to make the corrections.” Roxanne even told me to give the CS reference number to the dealer to help speed up the process. Now that’s what I call Customer Service! Have not taking it in yet, but for them to even offer to make the corrections, (with proof of course) is beyond anything I could have hoped for.

THANKS Buell Customer Service!!

>>>>>A recall has a safety or rideability concern; ie. legal liability.

Kinda.

A recall also REMOVES lots of liability in that once an owner is put on notice "we suggest you not ride the bike until this is fixed" the company has pretty much a blanket defense.

This is one reason for the solution timing (i.e. - must deliver recall parts within 10 days of notice) provisions in the laws. It keeps folks from seeing a problem and issuing a recall for a problem to be solved when they get around to it and abating liability in the meantime.

Buell's recall procedure is very impressive and the couple people I know who are involved in the decision making process are excellent custodians of owners best interests.

I'm impressed. My dealer this morning(outstanding BTW) informed me to make an appointment so they can order the kit.

They told me, "free of charge".

Now after all this time, and "Potential" solutions ( with mods i do not care to perform) Buell has stepped up and provided an "Engineered" solution

THis just keeps getting better!

So does this mean they'll reimburse me for the second ($55) low beam i installed,AND replace both with the NEW part numbers stated early in this thread?

Need i reinstall the old burnt up part before reporting? THe newest one only has about 1k miles on it. I'm so giddy, thanks Erik!

If you still have the old reflector I'd swap it back in and keep the new one as a spare
if it were me, however I wouldn't ask them to reimburse me for a part i intended to keep
so it would be kind of a double edged sword in that regard.

Let your conscience be your guide.

Got my letter in the mail today.

Im honestly amazed at Buell. This is something that other companies would shrug off. Buell just seems so integrated with listening to its customers, it really makes you feel like you are part of a family when you buy one. Hats off to Erik and the entire Buell company. I hope one day I will be able to make the trip to the yearly gathering and shake his hand : )

Holy F the headlights SUCK! Last night was the fist time I've been on a really dark twisty road with these lights. 35mph is dangerous. 40mph is insane. Thank god for the service bulletin.

Whilst all you R guys have the front fairing off and are replacing the reflectors, you might want to give some thought to upgrading to HID's.

I saw this installation on Damnut's bike at Home Coming, and was much impressed.

There are two reasons for this:

1. Much higher light output
2. The bulbs run much cooler, thus reducing the possibility of reflector failure in the future.

Kits for this conversion are available on eBay for $127. shipped. I just ordered a kit for my Lightning, as I though it might be amusing to be able to see the road at night.

Opps. My Bad.

I forgot.

Buell won't just give you the new part. That would be entirely too easy.

Going to make you find a dealer who knows what is going on, make an appointment, pray for the best.

Best of luck to you, gentleman.

Anyway, changing over to these new mini ballast HID's is still something to consider.

I've considered the HID's. The actual light pattern appears to suck.

The Hellas are probably still going to be my final solution, but I'm hoping we get a
seriously re-designed reflector.

a few packages of lights showed up last week and i took a look at them. it really doesnt APPEAR to me to have much of a different reflective party in it. put i did not tear one apart to get a complete look so i still do not know for sure until i do something along those lines.

Now I know who can answer my question. Anybody feel free though. I was at my dealer today and was going to get(or order) the rubber boot that is missing off the back of one of my lights. They haven't received any recall units last I heard. The parts guy was looking in a newer book and it showed the boot on the light and only one number as a unit. I told him I had been carrying the boot part number around in my pocket, but had, of course, left it at home when I actually made it out there.
Then he looked it the 03 book and sure enough, separate parts and numbers.
At last my question: Did those new lights have a boot on them?

>>>Let your conscience be your guide.

And let common sense guide you. If you recently replaced something and need it changed or warranted there exist avenues to deal with that. There's no need to do silly stuff like sticking in old parts.

I doubt the P/N works at present, it's likely a special number for the program and (I'm guessing here) the number will supercede the current number.

The light output on my 07 Bolt was very poor from new, so I don't think the new headlights will be much better unless the reflector has been radically changed.

i dont believe the boot comes with them. it wasnt on the assembly i pulled out. although i didnt empty everything out of the box, but it just looked like a second headlight assembly was left in there and nothing else.

suppose i can try to remember to double check when im back at work.

Cheers to Buell, just got my letter today. I am sure all my 4 legged deer neighbors will be happy too.
I already had the lights replaced under warranty because the plastic ring that holds the lens in broke a couple years ago. I don't know what it is but the replaced ones broke in the same place, maybe has something to do with living on a dirt road. The new ones also are hardly putting out any light. I am glad they recalled these lights, this was one issue that would have kept me from buying another buell.

The way I was told No_Rice, the entire unit (both lights, mounting/adjustment bracket) is the new part. Both lights and mounting plate is in the box. If that is different than what you have in the box under the new part number that will make me a little curious as to what the service guy I talked to was looking at today.

At the dealer today, they got lights; light's got no boot. Ordered a boot, a whopping $1.00. I didn't know there was anything in that book fo a dollar!
Got my name on one of those kits though. They are going to do it one day while I wait, bless their hearts. I was sweating having to leave it there.
I got my letter yesterday, along with someone else's. Whoops! Guess I'll mail it back to them.

I picked up the new lights for my bike and installed them. The housings do not look like they have a different shape, but do have new markings on them. Differences I did notice are as follows:

Slightly different shaped spoon in the low beam lamp.
New light deflector (like the spoon) in the high beam lamp.
New lenses shape and rings on the outer surface of both lenses at the center.
The chrome coating has a new clear coat on it.
The lenses bezels have a higher glass fill content now.
The outer housing is also glass filled.
The outer housings now have a rubber plug in the bottom. The old parts had a knock out at the same location.

Both of my old lamps, which have been on the bike about a year, were both degrading. DUH!!!

I have not been out at night yet. I'll have to do that tonight to see if I notice a difference.
