so long, Nevada. it's been fun. hello, California. i've been expecting you.

Exactly 32 miles later i idled quietly thru the parking lot at Furnace Creek Inn and Ranch and rolled up to a shiny new SV650. my friend Denise had been standing outside in the dark, waiting patiently next to her bike, since i'd called her hour earlier from Beatty.

it was so good to see her.

it was so good to be home.

Amazing what happens when you get a SV and a V-Strom together!

I know you need 7,500 miles to bring into and register a 49 state bike in Cali.

What would one risk not having the 7,500 logged before crossing the state line.

I may need this information for future use. : )

And...it's okay to use the word "lover." ; ) Putting Denise into the same category as me and Court will not score you points, well maybe with Court. You ever get a ticket before? You ever been in court? crazy Sorry to ruin your wonderful tale with my perverse humor. I can't help it sometimes.

Epic tale. You deserve some kind of major prize. What's next? I wanna join in next time.

PdxJim: ; ) & ; )

Blake: Denise is my BEST friend. : )

when i was in Colorado weighing the pros and cons of getting the 'Strom i called the California DMV and was told that a Cali resident getting caught riding a newly-purchased 49-state bike here with less than 7500 miles on it would receive a major fine (unspecified amount), and the bike would be "blacklisted" for two years, during which time the bike has to be kept PHYSICALLY outside of the state, and also has to be REGISTERED out of state as well. a little painful, in other words.

i was also informed that there is a toll-free hotline here in Cali set up specifically to report violators of the sub-7500 kind.

prize? nice idea. if anyone from Publisher's Clearing House is listening, NEXT time i'd like to do this trip on the back of a Buell.

what's next? really don't know. i told JB2 in an e-mail the other night that i'm young enough to think i've still got some quality riding time ahead of me, yet old enough to realize that this trip may ultimately prove to be the ride of my lifetime. it certainly is up to THIS point, of that there is no doubt.

if it DOES ultimately prove to be the ride of my lifetime, well, i can easily live with that. : )

and with that, this seems like a good time to pull this little saga into the garage and close the door.

-------------------------------------------------

DAY 24, cont.

Denise and i took our time rolling out this morning...we, um, had a lot of catching up to do. it was a casual ride home, and we stopped near Mt. Whitney for lunch, giving me a chance to crank out one last batch of postcards from the road. "Having a wonderful ride, wish you were here!"

it was odd seeing my stomping grounds again, thru a set of seemingly much older eyes - the three weeks i'd been gone felt much longer than that.

soon enough the Kern River Valley opened up ahead of us, and Lake Isabella came into view. Thirty minutes later we turned onto Bristlecone Drive, and we were home.

TOTAL MILEAGE FOR THE DAY: 203.8

-------------------------------------------------

it's at this point that there should be some sort of grand, glowing wrap-up, words perhaps inspirational, certainly something entertaining.

well, i hope that everything up to now has been just that. i'm appreciative for the opportunity to post this tale here on BADWEB, in spite of the low Buell content. Erik knows where my heart is, and some day i hope to be in love with another of his creations.

there's so much to say, but really, it's already been said. heartfelt, emotional thanks are due for all the principals in this piece, all the friends, old and new, in person or via an enthusiastic post here on BADWEB, who helped stoke this particular fire. i'd name names, but sure as the world would forget someone. you know who you are, as do i, and i thank you all.

Denise, i could write ten thousand words, and still not do the impact of your life on mine the justice it deserves. i'm a lucky man. thank you. : )

finally...JB2, i couldn't have done this ride without you. we've both been thru some tough times, and i've made no secret of how instrumental your friendship has been on several occasions in holding my head above the waves. i hope this ride provided as much healing for you as it did for me, and i hope that this is not our last epic adventure together. eternal thanks, my brother. : )

well, much the same way that i hated to see this ride come to an end, yet was relieved when it did, so too do i feel about this thread.

i am out of words.

That, my friend, I am confident when I say is an "inaccurate statement".

I'm off to a meeting, but even I, the quiet one in the group, have a few "wind up" words for your epic trip.

Be well, rest up for the next "write".

Write at ya in a bit...

almost any experience of note will leave you feeling older, I'm thinkin -- how better to register time than by experience (Indy said it better, of course, it's not the years, it's the milage)? you've no doubt grown, learned and loved more in the last few weeks/months than many do in a lifetime, sir --

good for you for making the opportunity to do so!

thanks for being such a cool part of this gig, Ed. : )

this deal DID take a little time to put to words and pix here (Denise achieved "BADWEB widow" status several times during the process...), but it'll come as no suprise when i say it was a labor of love. one of the cool things for me was even right up to the end i never "peeked" at the pix ahead of time - the very first time i'd see a new batch of photos was during the edit process just prior to posting. anyway, thanks again for your words, and for making me 'n JB2 feel welcome, and if Cindy happens to accidentally make up a couple of extra discs, well, i trust you've got mine and JB2's mailing addresses? : )

Excellent tale, Ferry Baughton!

Your yarn spin has caused me to ignore my wife as well as my work on several occasions because the unfolding tale was way to interesting to log off from. There is a price to pay but my credit is still good at the "casino".

Thanks, again.

All I hear are crickets chirping since you finished your tale and I need another fix of motorcycle madness and uncontrolled wanderlust.

In that spirit, here is my latest motorcycle adventure. I am out of words in only 41 words (~2.4 spamkus). Ok, here goes:

"Al Lighton, Ebear, Sandblast and I wicked it up to the IMS in Long Beach last Saturday. It shprizzed on us although the weather report said 0% chance of rain. After the show, we rode home. I am out of words."

Yawn... methinks your adventure was a tad more exciting.
