Did I mention that Jerry Haughton is full of sheeite so much that it spilled from his mouth with every word he spoke to Zig-Zag and Burrhead-Barney rangers? I kept thinking "Jerry if you shut up they might let us go". ; )

Seventeen adventure packed and precious days that I'll never forget. Thanks Bro.

I kept thinking "Jerry if you shut up they might let us go".

let us go? we BOTH know THAT wasn't gonna happen. : )

besides, i didn't have all that much to say to Burrhead and Zig-Zag, really, except the truth, which was that we weren't going THAT fast, and that we slowed WAY down for traffic and were safe, respectful, and courteous to any pedestrians we met.

(message edited by Ferris to inject a little warmth, and to follow in Reindog's excellent tire tracks. please move along, there's little to see here.) : )

FMJ, ever had anybody stand up during a traffic stop and be willing to take the hit for the group besides me? you'll recall that we all skated that day (and WITHOUT having to use your get-out-of-jail card). : )

how'd you do at Bonneville?

Sandblast, you need to set your sights a little lower - you haven't actually met (or ridden with) me yet.

Tom, thanks.

JB2 didn't get me into ANY trouble, at ANY time during this trip - the stop above was MY bad, all kidding aside.

nearly had another "close" encounter doing a large lap of Nevada on the return trip, but you have to wait to DAY 23 to hear the tale...

yes, Burrhead: #1, Zig-Zag: #2. wish i could say these were MY nicknames for them, but JB2 gets the credit. Zig-Zag was cool all along; Burrhead took awhile to come around, but in the end proved to be just a regular guy, into bikes, just doing his job.

not sure he'd appreciate his new nickname, however...

PDX, agreed, WAY too funny! : )

Wonder if our new friends "might" have been upset with the new names or if they were "actually" pissed when we gave them a V-8 serenade leaving the park? That I'm sure they heard! Turn the V-Tech up, please?thumbsup

We would meet Zig-Zag's brother who was in another state and disguising himself as a drummer but nonetheless, his brother.

i'm betting B'head and Z-Z actually enjoyed the show we put on once we were off Federal soil. still think it woulda been cool to run into them in Fruita whilst we were wolfing down Tequila drinks and buy them a round or two. : )

sure glad i asked about your door first instead of just up and fixing it like i was thinking about doing...

FMJ, i made a stop at Bonneville on the way back, but you were no where to be found? two more records, that's very cool! the BLURR lives on. : )

DAY FOUR, MONDAY 9/6/04

it was a brisk, early launch this morning, as we had a full day of Colorado and Utah sightseeing slated. the overnight low in nearby Grand Junction had tied a 43-year-old record - we could see our breath hanging in the air as we readied the bikes. my notes from the morning say, "Clear, crisp, blue, anticipation. Cold!"

the sprinklers at the motel were dispensing water in quantity sufficient to irrigate a small desert, and the bikes were soaked. pissed at first, i changed my tune in short order as the bug splat from the previous day's ride had been fully rehydrated and wiped off the VFR with relative ease.

Highway 141 southeast of Fruita was first on the mo-genda, which entailed a cold-d-d ride in tough, early-morning, in-your-face lighting to get there, but when we did the effort was well worth it, and the stunning scenery and alluring road set the tone for the rest of the day.

we stuck our noses up an interesting side road, but it quickly turned to gravel and we u-turned. (hmmm, dual-purpose, baby!)

i got these cool pix - both taken at the same spot but looking in opposite directions - for the effort, however.

here, look CLOSER. this flume (and accompanying canal, 13 miles long in total) was constructed between 1888 and 1891 by the Montrose Placer Mining Company to provide water to work its Dolores Canyon gold claims.

the last five miles of the flume clung to the canyon walls above the river. during its heyday the canal and flume carried almost 24,000,000 gallons of water a day.

the remains of this amazing feat of engineering are now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

we met these future Hooligans in Naturita, Colorado during a fuel stop, and were charmed by their street-wise yet innocent and respectful ways.

the youngster on the bicycle (his dad's bike - note the size disparity!) could REALLY make it dance, and reeled off several impressive stoppies. look at the look on his face and tell me he's not ready to take on the world.

when i asked if i could take a pic, and then showed them the results, they said, "Hey, we're gonna be famous! Tell everyone we're 'The Boys from Naturita!'"

consider it done, gents. : )
