near Tooele, Utah. this guy had an amazing collection of old war weaponry scattered about his property, along with an equally amazing collection of "Keep Out" and "No Trespassing" signs. i had to step inside his gate a few feet to get this pic, and was uncomfortable in the process, enough so i opted not to document the rest of his toys.

also near Tooele, Utah. this old tow truck is a restoration just waiting to happen. with the exception of the engine, which has been picked over pretty good, it's basically all there, and surprisingly rust-free.

you'd never know from the photo but this is a vacant corner lot on the main drag in a busy little town, strewn with trash and debris and surrounded by old houses, parked cars, power lines, and other visual distractions. the hardest part of getting this photo was NOT getting all the accompanying clutter, so that the truck would give the impression of resting at peace out in some old farm field somewhere.

whew. with all that said: cool old Ford, wish it was mine. : )

Interstate 80, just west of Great Salt Lake. somewhere "out there" are the Bonneville Salt Flats.

well, i've frittered away enough time today that i'm now pointed due west into the merciless afternoon sun, the conditions soon to be exacerbated by a vast sea of highly-reflective sodium chloride.

SPF 40 anyone?

Outrider,
I haven't stomped around WI too much, other than the trip with the Iowa gang to the 20th last year.

I'll be in Dubuque, IA starting in Feb, and there are some pretty decent roads running up and down the Mississippi in Iowa and Illinois, I'd be glad to give you a tour any time you want.

RT,
I spent all of one day at Ferris's place, and he's got it golden. One gorgeous Lake Isabella right out the front door, with some of the coolest roads I've ever seen a hop away, and he shares an 'office' (pass out spare bedroom for Buellers with a few too many beers) with one of the coolest chicks a Bueller could want.

Ferris and Denise, one in a million.
You guys are great.

Next time you make a trip like this, I want in. You ready for the trip around the lower 48? It's being planned...

Baby Bart,
You are a sweetheart. : ) !

early WW2 tank, I believe -- a Stewart, named after the confederate cavalry general (or am I just heaqring the voices again <?>; ) -- featured heavily in the must read series of late 50s early 60s comic the "Ghost Tank)

but again, as most always, I could be wrong

JH -- again, I'm accessing RAM that hasn't been checked since release 1.1, so I may be off -- it's a very cool lawn ornament, though!

Bomber, the main body and chassis looks correct between the two, but the turret details look different?

tankers changed stuff a fair amount, from what little I know -- look at pics of Shermans, and you'll note some have hulls that are smooth and rounded, others are angular (weldments) . . . .

you know those pesky engineers -- alwaysa changin stuff!

you can see this thing for miles, as you make your way across the lunar landscape, and if you're a first-time visitor and don't know what it is (like me), it's pretty fascinating to see it growing larger mile by mile, as the brain busies itself with bad guesses.

oddly enough, even after i pulled up to it i STILL didn't know what it was. : )

allow me a moment of self-righteous indignation if you will: I HATE GRAFFITI GEEKS!!!

what is it about defacing someone else's handiwork that is so appealing to so many frikkin' mental misfits out there? i had seen enough stupid, senseless graffiti and downright acts of vandalism on this trip to last a lifetime, and one of these days i'm gonna catch someone in the act and it ain't gonna be pretty.

sorry.

i now return you to your regularly scheduled cross-country road trip. : )

That tree of Utah has always been a favorite!

By the way..after a little "incident" at the Marine Corps Miramar facility in 1972 yours truly was prohibited from "further operation of, or duty directly associated with the crews of, any track type vehicle owned or operated by American Armed Forces"

Frankly, I was less bothered than they were and I was right up front about what I'd done with the case of DuPont 80% Hy-Drive to the M4 Armored Personnel Carrier north of Claycomo, MO. I consider a training flaw on the part of others, not an operational flaw on my part.

Friend Ferris....you and I could have us one frickin' good time with one of those tanks, old or new, in a single afternoon.

I can see it now...."Local Honda shop mysteriously vaporized". Remind me to tell you the rest of this story when I get to CA!

I love the pics....keepin' coming!

btw, do NOT bother to hot wire a Sheridan -- the ignition locks do not require keys to operate, so all that time standing on your head will avail you naught, with the possible exception of a good head rush (which, of course, should not be underrated)

learn from my mistakes, and go on to make your own!
