Fairmount, Indiana, very near JB2's Hartford City, home of James Dean and a talking cat.

bad photo, but the proprietor of Rebel Rebel was probably about the coolest person i've ever met, worth going to the place just to soak up his personna and catch his enthusiasm. bought THE book (said he) on James Dean while i was there, and will try to put the read to it during our upcoming "semi-furious" winter. ; )

just down the street is the museum, where lives nearly EVERYTHING that James Dean ever owned, including his motorcycles.

and if i'd shot this photo a little closer to the door you could read the sign that said "No Cameras Allowed."

the folks inside were very polite and courteous, but despite some pretty compelling begging on our parts they would not allow us to take photos of James Dean's motorcycles.

got to LOOK at 'em, tho, and that was pretty cool. and got to BUY photos of his bikes, which i'll prolly post pix of later on when i wrap this thread up.

just down the road a piece, just outside Fairmount, just ahead and above the front tire on the 'Strom, is the house where James Dean grew up.

we were courteous, staying only a minute, and approaching no closer. it's understandable that a lot of folks drop by for photos, and we didn't want to intrude.

it took us a bit to find his headstone - the cemetery is huge - but it was worth it to put some sort of closure on our visit.

James Dean is as big now as he ever was, and it was intriguing and enjoyable to spend some time in his hometown. they're mighty proud of their native son, and miss him dearly.

i live just a few hours from where he was tragically killed here in California, and thought about visiting the site on the last day of my trip.

in the end, i couldn't work up the enthusiasm to document such a sad place, not after the warmth and beauty and vibe that i had experienced so far THIS day.

ride in peace, James Dean.
