I forgot all about that!! The Aprilia Tuono! Of course, having been spoiled over the past several decades by relatively maintenance free shaft and belt driven bikes I don't think I could EVER go back to that messy, maintenance-intensive (and EXPENSIVE) chain drive. No, in retrospect, the BMW R1200R remains at the top of a very short list. And unlike the XB12Ss, I CAN get locking hard bags for that bike. |

I've been Buell-less since they quit making the S2 but if I could have anything out there instead of a Buell it would have to be the MV/Agusta F4. Or... maybe the Can-Am Spyder. I know it's got three wheels but ya gotta hear one run and see it in person. It screams wicked and is. |

This is a really tough one. I really like air-cooled twins in a sporting chassis and without Buell you've removed 1/3rd of the available bikes. I'm really fond of Ducati's 1000DS/1100DS motor, but it doesn't come in anything I want to own at the moment. If they could shove a hotted-up 1100DS motor in a half-faired 999/1098 I'd buy one of those. BMW's R1200 motor is nice, but I don't think either the R1200R or the R1200S is angry enough. I can't afford either one anyway. I'd prefer not to put up with water cooling and DOHC valve adjustments unless I get at least 120hp in return, but that eliminates all the non-race-replica v-twins. Then again, if I were willing to put up with race replica ergonomics and water cooling I might as well swing for the fences and go for an I4 literbike. If I went used I'd look for an '04-'06 R1, if I went new I'd go for an '08 CBR1000RR |

Watercooling doesn't bother me in the least. DOHC in and of itself isn't bad either. DOHC with shim-under-bucket adjustments, however, is a major pain in the ass that I'd just rather avoid. Shim-OVER-bucket is simple enough that even I could do it (and I have). Of course, the best would be the old Honda setup in the CB700 Nighthawk: hydraulic! I'd even be willing to give up some racetrack suspension performance and go back to a "Normal" front fork (instead of these new cartridge forks). Once you do a fork oil change, you'll understand what I mean. By the way, all this explains why (as much as I find MOST of them beautiful) I'd NEVER own a Ducati. Desmodromic valves AND a chain drive are two BIG deal breakers. I want a bike I can RIDE, not have to worry about how long it'll be off the road for maintenance (and how OFTEN). The '06 and higher XBs have it all (almost): Belt drive, hydraulic valves and a 5,000 mile service interval. The only downside are those cartridge forks I mentioned earlier... |

An old 916 duc! How about a 996 with 916 bodywork?
Smokescreen 5,000 mile service interval My Ducati goes 6,000 between service intervals per my service manual. (Message edited by smokescreen on June 02, 2008) |

H-D Nightster -or- Kawasaki Versys -or- Piaggio MP3 500 (that's right, a scooter!) I'd have to ride them all back to back and decide which was more my style, since they're totally unrelated. ~SM |

Fork oil change a problem? oh well, one man's "pain in the ass" is another's "no big deal" |

I just ran across this, I want it. Along the Buell lines, big American powerplant shoved into a sporty chasis. http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2006/07/18/wakan -1640-new-french-v-twin-motorcycle/ They even make mention of the XB12 (Message edited by Kyrocket on June 02, 2008) |

I'd have no problem jumping right on an Aprilia Tuono Factory. Vee twin and Ohlins. Good combo. KTM is nice, of course we would have to remove the "Star Wars" fairing. Nothing the matter with a Ducati Monster, I would like the air cooled one with the Ohlins from the S4RS, if that's ok? The Triumph Street triple is a little sweetheart too, needs a suspension upgrade, but that's nothing new. I don't think I would be going for an inline four race replica, and the Japanese streetfighters are not too appealing. I think the MV Agusta and the Benelli nakeds are just trying a bit too hard, style wise. |

Glitch, Blake and I were discussing the differences of changing fork oil over in the XB Board. Probably in the archives now. If you are REALLY interested, do a "Search." Not important enough to drag out again. |
