There's an interesting book I read part of some time back, it's an ethnography of an anthropology department of a university written by one of the professors over a period of 20 years or so. Quite interesting some of the politics and emotional sway some members of academia have over others, and quite interesting how this all plays out in what is studied and what is the prevailing assumptions of the day.

Not that that has anything to do with the discussion at hand, just thinking I'd like to go find that particular book again before next Spring and finish reading the rest of it.

Oh well, carry on.

...and mine isn't Mr. Bumstead, Tramp. As for spelling, it's not my strong suit. The journal I was referring to is the most compelling and professionally accepted scientific journal I know of. Granted it may not represent Truth with a capital "T" but nothing really does. I can only comment on the knows of my science, and speculate on the unknowns. Don't be so quick to discount the possibility of ocean fairing paleoindians. Remember the geography was a little different during the Pliestocene what with all the glaciers and island chains that are now submerged.

Jeez. I REALLY need to go ride my bike. This is about as brutal as defending a master's thesis.

Even the myth that the US Army purposefully distributed purposefully infected blankets or whatever to native Americans has been shown to be false. We have plenty to be ashamed of in our dealing with native Americans. We shouldn't need to make stuff up. Killing all the bison is #1 in my mind.

And three cheers for what Mike mentions concerning the curiculum and teachings. And that is not only a problem for college/university professors; it also infects our children's public schooling.

PC run amok.

good point. in my haste to point out that colombus bore no such blankets, i should have stated that the 'myth' was said to have occured in the 19th, as opposed to the 15th century.
excelllent point that we have enough to be ashamed of (both factual and otherwise, trampthinks) without spreading the type of urban myth i typed out.

exactly my point. why are you so quick to discount the possibility (more of a probability) of preamerind celtic settelement? why do these 'possibilities' only work to the advantage of your argument, anywaze?

Don't like the ACLU. Did you know they started out as a group that promoted communism in America? And no, they will not defend ytour right to keep and bear arms. But if you have knowledge of a case, Jay I'd like to hear it.

actually, the ACLU caught a lotta she-at for defending a klansman, a few years back.
and they didn't 'promote' communism, they defended citizens' rights to exercise the political beliefs of their own choosing.
the aclu has defended gun rights on sevral occasions (and WON!). everything is NOT one-sided, party-constant in this world.
i'm all for equal rights for african americans and women, and at the same time, i'm also fervently anti- affirmative action. i don't judge the aclu by individual cases they've fought (i'm anti-klan), but by their overall job, which is to defend civil liberties by their definition under our nation's constitution. gun ownership is a civil liberty, as is free speech, whether you're a nazi or a commie or a liberal or a conservative.
the act of trying to 'categorize' people according to one of their many beliefs is ignorant, and such categorization was the precursor of doom in most great societies.
when you pigeonhole people or groups according to a small fraction of their beliefs, you're really
an integral part of the bigger problem.

Tramp,

"Categorizing" is what scientists do when they note features in various forms of life. IT isn't unfair to categorize people based on the practise of their behavior. We're are not all the same. Case in point, you and I are hear because we like Buells especially.

I think your vision is noble, but ignoring harmful characteristics in other people can be dangerous to your well being.

let's put it this way, jon- i do NOT label people as conservative or liberal.
it IS unfait to categorize all jews as avaricious, or muslims as terrorists, or colored folk as ethically inferior, or white people as having superiority complexes, etc. those categorizations are unjust, and having stated two different stypes of categorization,
lemme 'splain my original point.
citizen "A" is anti-abortion, pro-gun and thinks that drilling for oil in alaska is a paramount idea.
what's your knee-jerk assessment of his political ethos?
of course, armed with only thie aforementioned intel, you'd label him: "conservative"

now, who's to say that same guy isn't pro-spotted owl, antiwar and an naacp member?
now whaddaya call him?
...i'm sure you see my point, if only while kicking and screaming...
jon, categorizations of people are rarely just.
dassa ma point-a!

it was more me being idiotic and hamfisted about how i was trying to make a point, i think.
when you stated:
"...IT isn't unfair to categorize people based on the practise of their behavior. We're are not all the same. Case in point, you and I are hear because we like Buells especially."

-You are, obviously, correct. (not that it's up to me to make that, or any, judgement).
that's what we're both saying...to categorize based upon the "practise of...behavior" (funny- you spell 'practise' the british way, and 'behavior' the american way, and i do the opposite. i spell 'em 'practice' and 'behaviour'.
imagine trying to categorize either of us, nationally, by that these spellings ) is fine. my apologies if i stated it poorly the first time.

Check this out. Unbelievable...

quote:

By BRIAN SKOLOFF
Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO

The USS Iowa joined in battles from World War II to Korea to the Persian Gulf. It carried President Franklin Roosevelt home from the Teheran conference of allied leaders, and four decades later, suffered one of the nation's most deadly military accidents.

Veterans groups and history buffs had hoped that tourists in San Francisco could walk the same teak decks where sailors dodged Japanese machine-gun fire and fired 16-inch guns that helped win battles across the South Pacific.

Instead, it appears that the retired battleship is headed about 80 miles inland, to Stockton, a gritty agricultural port town on the San Joaquin River and home of California's annual asparagus festival.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., a former San Francisco mayor, helped secure $3 million to tow the Iowa from Rhode Island to the Bay Area in 2001 in hopes of making touristy Fisherman's Wharf its new home.

But city supervisors voted 8-3 last month to oppose taking in the ship, citing local opposition to the Iraq war and the military's stance on gays, among other things.

"If I was going to commit any kind of money in recognition of war, then it should be toward peace, given what our war is in Iraq right now," Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi said.

Feinstein called it a "very petty decision."

"This isn't the San Francisco that I've known and loved and grew up in and was born in," Feinstein said.

Source

I agree with Senator Feinstein!

I won't be spending my tourist dollars in SF as long as the city leaders maintain that kind of attitude.

I like the hypothesis that the Norse colony failed when the LCO ( little climactic optimum, aka medieval warm period ) ended & the grapes in Vineland made vinegar instead of wine. The Vikings are boozers theory of history.

The Viking contact with the "skraelings" is well documented. ( the norse name for the indig North Americans, because they yelled while attacking, distinct from the Eskimo, who inhabited north Greenland & moved south as the climate changed )
No reliable remains, though temporary housing would not have left large foundations. Your guess is as good as mine on the Oklahoma Rune Stone.

The Celts may have left DNA, but not cities. The "Brendan Expedition" proved that the Irish Could make it to North America, not that they Did. Pity.

As for the Bearing land bridge? The Eskimo people laugh. They say you can just walk the ice in cold winters, and have for centuries. Russian & Alaskan tribes have long intermarried.

The important thing to remember about science is that your knowledge is incomplete. Keep looking.

As for whose policies are worse for ill-eagle aliens, both parties have folk that gain from that oppression, from nannies paid ( very little ) under the table, to massive bribes from major companies. Chickens in Arkansas? just to name one. I have my opinion on who's more crooked. I think it's people who think they know better & should be in charge. You know, politicians.

Screw PC. But. There is no need to be mean.

Boy, ain't that the truth! 30 years ago, I was convinced that I was the smartest guy I'd ever heard of. It's amazing how stupid I've become (which is probably another way of saying that now I may actually be approaching the threshhold of "smart"; ).

Ain't that the truth. The older I get, the less I know.

The good news is that the most true things are typically the simplest as well, and they are the most profound, and typically run the deepest.

I suspect that by the time I die, I will only really be sure of four things...

1) God loves me.
2) People are really important.
3) I like to spend time with my family.
4) It feels good to build and fix things.
