Why do you keep taunting me with that Sportster? It was my screen-saver for a while, but it was like dangling dope in front of a junkie. WHAT A COOL LOOKING BIKE. The coolest part is how inexpensive it can be to do a project like that if you are careful and wrench on it yourself. I love to see time and effort blow those high dollar choppers out of the water. Thanks for sharing it again. Bill (Message edited by bill0351 on March 31, 2008) (Message edited by bill0351 on March 31, 2008) |

thanks again guys,, the forks are +4 in a pair of 6 degree raked trees. i wanted to keep her stock fish hook sliders. so i machined up the trees, fork brace, and caps that hold seals on top of the sliders. stock she would have had rubber gators and no fork seals.. when i got her she was pretty much a rolling basket case.. lots of time and work. anyone can buy a new bike and bolt on chrome or accessories.. you can not just go buy some thing like her. new just dosen't carry the same character. bill that is really cool,, i know people like my bikes, but would never have thought good enough to make them screen a saver.. that totally rocks,, thank you bill, aaron |

anyone can buy a new bike and bolt on chrome or accessories.. you can not just go buy some thing like her. new just dosen't carry the same character. Aaron, you make me feel dirty for owning a new Harley! can't speak for anyone else, but ponying up for mine was a HUGE leap of financial faith, and i work like a madman to make the bike and insurance payments. i've ridden religiously for 43 years (first vehicle i ever spent my own money on was a motorcycle), and this is my fifth Harley, in addition to a '76 FL, '86 Evo Sporty, '86 FXR-P, and '80 ironhead XL (a rolling basket case like yours when i bought it, and show quality like yours when i got done). when the Road King was first introduced many moons ago, i told myself i'd have one someday. it took a long, longgggg time, but the day finally came, and it's all i hoped for. no bolt-on chrome (truth be told it came standard with most of the chrome RK bits that Harley offers...), no tassles, no bells, no "Live to Ride, Ride to Live" adornment, no "No Limit" AmEx in my wallet, just a happy, pleasant, gorgeous, timeless Harley-Davidson that is as content strafing the Dragon as it is hauling my butt and a ton of gear around this great country of ours. props to you for your bike and how you got here, and props to me for my bike and how I got here. best, FB |

Here is Miss Jade, a 2001 FXDX The first photo is when I got her. The second is as she currently looks. Modifications include Purple tins, custom header, built 95" motor, police seat, billet fork brace, Deuce rear wheel, five spoke front wheel, Metzler tires, Ohlins steering damper, among others. Members of this board will notice, perhaps, the Buell XB front fender.

jerry it was not meant to make you feel bad for buying a new Harley.. or any one else.. if i could afford one of them in the garage i would probably have one of those too.. the road king is a beautiful bike.. and my statement was in no way meant to be little all you work and effort to obtain your bike.. and my 62 is no show quality bike.. it is just my bike.. one that gets ridden and slung threw the corners with me hanging off the side and the peg pushed up and sparks flying.. between the re welded cases and saddle bag wear marks threw the paint to one kick on a good day to the 50 or so on a bad one. she is all "character". i didn’t say that new bikes were not nice.. that i don’t long after them,, heck ,, im sure they invoke a lot less four letter words,, and are a million times more comfortable to ride.. personally i love the look of the Harley nightster,, but like i said i don’t feel that they carry the same character as a old beat up Harley.. It is like your favorite old jacket.. mine is a green carrheart,, and everyone says man that coat has a lot of “character“ .. that is the nice way of saying it looks like you were attacked by a bear and the bear won!!! i hope my previous statement didn’t offend to much and i do sincerely apologize.. some time it is hard to convey in written words how you would like things to sound as if they were spoken. sorry Aaron |

Aaron, no need to apologize. i included a couple of " 's" in my post to try to help indicate i was in a good mood when i wrote those words. that said, i think it's pretty common these days to assume anyone riding a brandy-new Harley must have more money than brains, and i can assure you i'm in short supply of BOTH... you say that your Sporty isn't show quality. based on the photos above, i disagree, but i DO agree that signs of use are cool, imbue character and patina, and having taken a Sportster that sounds much the condition of yours originally (mine was chained to a tree like an unwanted dog the first time i laid eyes on it), i know how much work it takes to breathe life back into one, and i salute you for that. i also apologize, as i did not mean to offend. i was into my third Yuengling's Black & Tan (on an empty stomach), felt like writing something, and you happened to be the unlucky victim. it sure would't hurt my feelings if you posted more pix of your bike, especially if you've got some "before and during" shots. thx for your kind reply, and all the best. Thanks! This is what I've done.. -Supertrapp exhaust with an open end cap -SE air filter/carb rejet/homemade crankcase breather system. -Lowered the front by raising the fork tubes about 1.5" in the triple trees. -Storz rearset controls -Cut the front and rear fenders -Lucas taillight -Corbin Gunfighter Seat -SS brake lines -Brembo Caliper and Rotor on front (not on yet in this picture) -Flanders Low Cafe Bars -Mtn Bike bar end mirrors -Lots of black powdercoat I also have a set of clipons with Buell Controls. The clipons wear me down so they're not on either. The bike is currently torn down for a top end refresh. Hope to have it back up in a couple of weeks. Barry Hollister, CA |

Good looking scooter Chase. I wasn't sure that I'd like the drag bars that were on my FXD when I got it. They have 6" rise and 2" pullback and are about 31" tip to tip on the grips. But I wouldn't consider any thing else now. I get perfectly natural grip and wrist angle and once I got the seat height right, a very comfortable riding position with my hand not too high and just a little forward lean. I never thought about bad the standard buckhorns are until I tried these. By playing with the rise and pullback, you can suit just about any need. Jack |

That's awesome Pirate. I was thinking of trying to put a Ulysses front end on my 2001 Dyna FXDX. Do you think it would work? Do the buell triple clamps and bearings fit right up to the Harley frame without any machining? Keep up the good work, and keep us up to date please. |

Check out this thread a couple of years ago. About putting an (inverted) S1W Front End on a Sportster: http://wwwbadweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/224727.html That needed some minor machine work but it produced one of the best looking Sportsters I've ever seen. There are some good photos of the finished bike in that thread at the link. Jack (Message edited by jackbequick on May 16, 2008) P.S. That link was produced by a search of the KV but for the life of me I can't get it to work from this thread. Maybe someone can help? Weird part is I saw the same thing on a post by someone else a while back and fixed it by taking a visible space out from in front of the "224727.html" part of the link. I did a search for "inverted sportster", and (for both words), whole words and it was the first hit. It is at KV - Chassis » Suspension - Forks, Isolators, Shocks, and Swingarm » Archive through December 11, 2006 » S1W Front End on a Sportster » Archive through September 01, 2006 Here is the link to first post in the thread, I finally got one that works - from that link, check at the archive links at the top of it in chronological order, there are some great details and photos there: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/219290.html?1162217774 This work was done by Cjburr (Chris). Chris, are you still around? What is the feeling about that conversion after 18 months or so? Still a keeper? If you are, I nominate you to be a Founding Contributor for the Critical Mass topic. That is still one of the neatest things I've ever seen done to a Sportster. Jack |

Oh yeah. I saw that too. A little study of the details there speaks to improved handling and the devoted attention of a serious or ambitious rider: http://www.turbotimelounge.us/albums/Vics-Album/asy.jpg I mentioned Chris's project to Jon because it is so full of the details of the the work. Doing a similar conversion to a FXDX might or might not be as easy or practical. But I can see the attraction to him in considering it. Here is one of the photos that Chris posted of his finished project:

Jack, Thanks for posting all those nice looking Sporsters. Very interesting indeed. I wonder if anyone has put a Buell front end on an FXDX. I was thinking a Ulysses front end might solve the problem of the requirement for a longer fork length. |

Jon, Do you want to raise the front end of the your FXDX so it sets higher? Or do you want longer tubes to get more travel? I think the cjbarr Sportster was actually lowered a little bit by the swap. Here is the comparison photo he posted with his bike setting by a Sportster with the stock front end: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=3842&post=732618#POST732618 I not sure how Chris's worked out as far as balance, travel, and how well it actually handles or works. But I'll bet he did not lose any travel over what he started with and undoubtedly got better compression and rebound damping too. I hope we can get an input from him here eventually. The stock 39mm forks, like my '97 FXD, have about 4" of travel, and, of curse, give up some of that for preload and rider load. On my Dyna I wound up with about 2.5" of travel from "rider seated" to bottomed out. Your FXDX forks are much better than that I'm sure. And if you move on to another front end, put me at the top of the list of potential buyers for your old front end. :> I'm still not back on my Dyna with it's untested Race-Tech springs and Gold Cup emulators yet. I got the fenders back from painting today and am just starting to put it back together. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the "new" (for me) front end feels like. The 2.5" of compression travel will be more like 2.75" or 3" with the way it is now. That won't change much but I'm really hoping to see a little move up and down movement in the forks and feeling a little less of the road at the grips. I'm leaving for about 7-10 days on Wednesday so it will be a while yet before I get my ride this year. Grrrr! I am going to Cleveland to help another guy move a boat from Eastlake, OH to Portland, ME and that will be both fun and rewarding. This will be a first time trip for me on that route. We're taking a new Carver 46 from just east of Cleveland on Lake Erie to Lake Ontario and on to Owsego, NY. Then the Oswego Canal to Oneida Lake, then the Erie Canal and down the Hudson River, hang a left at New York City, another left at Cape Cod, and on to Portland, ME. It will be about 40 locks and 1,100 NM trip, and I'm getting paid for it too. With any luck by the end of July or so I'll have my Coast Guard Master's license (probably a 50 Ton Near Coastal ticket) and then I can be "Cap'n Jack". Arrrr! More rum Jim! Jack |
