Can I ride your Bonneville bike ???
My job is a lot of fun mixed with stress, but it's never boring. There are times that it's hard for me to believe that I'm doing what I do, even after 20 years of doing it.
My S1W and my Sportster are my stress relievers. I ride to work every day it's possible and by doing so I arrive with a grin and leave with one too.
It's good to know that we can all be jealous of each other for one reason or another. I'd love to run at Bonneville, maybe someday, at least I'll know some people there. |

Well the wife and kids are in Georgia, so I took the quiet time to move my turn signals down beside the headlight after I got my chores done.
First I removed the stem that holds them in the controls on the handlebars.
I then took the stem down to ACE and found out that they are metric, an M8 /1.0. this is a size 8 with a 1.0 thread pitch. I was unable to find this in a stainless bolt but I will get some stainless bolts when I go to Daytona Nut & Bolt to show them the bike. I also purchased 2 metal spacers to go over the bolts and hold the turnsignals away from the headlight, these I painted black. Total price was under $3.00.
Here is one mounted, you can see the hole behind the bolt where I will route the wires eventually.

Still waiting on my flyscreen and tach, will post those installs when I get them, and I will route the wires through the headlight bracket when I get time.
The bike is running and handling great, absolutely no problems except for the occasional snag of the kickstand bracket and that only occurs at slow speed if I turn too sharp. I believe when I go to a one size taller sidewall tire this will go away. My thanks to Blake for the idea. If not then I will solve it with a kickstand mod of some sort. |

CJ,you get me a tour and I get you a ride, no sweat.I am always willing to put friends on my Bonneville stuff as long as it stays together. Henrik has had a couple of rides and if we had had more time he was going to be on the S-2.
Course next years bike is going to launch like the space shuttle if all goes as planned. |

I truly wish I had the authority to get you in as I would love to take a spin on your salt rocket That is one beautiful machine.
If you are ever in Florida be sure to look me up and I will give you an insiders viewpoint of the tour we could take from the Visitors Center.
You wouldn't get in the ship, but if it was timed right you could get pretty close to one on the Pad.
Best of luck with your plans for next years incarnation of your bike, or is it a new bike ?? I look forward to seeing a post of the build up. |

Kind of a mix,starting with another S-2 frame I had that someone already cut on so I won't feel bad cutting some more. Need to change steering neck angle to get me some more room between tire and motor to hang stuff like Garrett turbo and intercooler,then need to add mounting tabs/framework for the new RR bodywork.
All that will be left from the current bike is suspension,wiring,wheels,etc.
Hey,want to swap job shirts? I love yours.

Actually, he was there, but he's apparently "assigning" flight surgeons and spending most his time in meetings at hourly "go-no go" meetings.
He said kind of what you implied about the tours...in the "good ol' days", when he was in the centrifuge lab, you could go anyplace, sit in anything and have a grand ol' time. Times have changed.
He's had one of the longest careers, going back to the Redstone Rocket days and has some great stories. He retires in December and had bought a castle in Mexico where he and my aunt are going to live. He'll remain a private consultant to NASA and keep his medical consulting business for the international space station in the Soviet Union.
By the way . . . that Skunk Works shirt and the pictures are absolutely incredible! |

Got my fairing today and installed it. The bike is coming together nicely now, all I lack now is the tach to complete the front end.

I think the flyscreen really sets it off. As each piece has been added to the bike I'm feeling better and better about this mod, not that I really had any doubts about what I was doing. It's just really hard to visualize how something is going to look from just the pic that inspired this.
I have all the costs and services written down and after I get the tach installed I'll post a final summary. |

Got some time today to install my tach and take some pics along the way,
First up I removed the flyscreen, the seat, unhooked the battery, and took the front bolt off the tank.
I used an empty oil bottle to hold the tank up while I unhooked the connector.
Next up was unhooking the old harness from the speedo and dummy lights, cutting the zipties on the harness, and removing the old harness. Here is the connector under the tank that needs to be disconnected.
Here's the old harness on the left and the new harness with the tach connector on the right. You can see that the new harness comes with the dummy lights and the trip meter reset button also. One snag was that the dummy light holder was different( held by screws versus the snaps on the old harness) I remedied this by removing the bulbs from the new harness and the old and switching the two.
I also changed from the home made studs in the speedo install to stainless allen bolts on both instruments. I slotted the holes as before and had to deepen the channel for the harness to clear the cup on the back. This was easily done with a sanding roll on the Dremel tool.
Heres the back of both instruments completed. I need to pop that button back out where the old speedo cable went and paint it black as its starting to rust. You can also see where the trip reset button fit right where the old trip reset cable from the Buell used to go.
And the front
Installed new zip ties on the harnesses, put the tank back down, reinstalled the seat and flyscreen, hooked up the battery, then fired her up.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a functional tach
My ear was pretty good as my idle set up with only the speedo was right at 900 RPM, even a blind hog will find an acorn eventually
Took the bike out for a spin and found that I had installed all the dummy lights correctly as the right blinker on gauge cluster came on when I turned on the right turn signal and the left worked also.
As soon as it got dark enough I took a pic of the running lights and they both matched, I was kind of wondering if the back lighting was different in 05 than in 06, my worries were for naught.
The final piece was a button I found to cover the hole where the old Buell trip reset button went. I just clipped off the studs on the back and applied some doubleback tape to it and stuck it over the hole for the pic. I'll remove it and put it back on with some automotive tape tomorrow.
It's too late right now for me to post the final summary with cost and such right now but I will get it out sometime this week. |
