Lighter

Ok I bought this cig lighter to mount somewhere on my XB12R, (for stuff like charging an IPOD, Cell Phone, GPS, Etc.) and am not really sure the best place to mount it. The cables arent really long enough to run it to the instrument panel, and Im not sure if you go directly to the battery or tap in somewhere else. I can make a mount, I just need to know the best place to connect it, or if anyone has done this?

I was thinking of adding one to the 'trunk' on my 9R. Seemed the ideal place to put it - but then I didn't want it to run a GPS or anything like that (in which case somewhere up in the front fairing area would be a better idea).

I immagine it would be quite simple to dis-assemble and un-solder (if they are soldered) the wire terminals used in the lighter end and replace them with wires long enough to reach your battery as well as terminals to fit the bettery as well.

Look at the BMW style ports. They are a LOT smaller and easier to mount, after that then just get an adaptor and youre in business.
I put one on my 9R just put it coming off the faring mount and its easy to get to for my XM and at night for my battery tender.
I'll try to get a pic up later

If you're wanting it to be accesible while riding, why not fab up a little bracket to bolt on to the "half-moon" clamp part of the clutch perch?..route wires down the handlebars...since your wiring has an in-line fuse, you could run it straight off battery, which means it would be powered even with ignition switch off, if you need it that way...On mine, XB12S,,I fabbed a small brkt. that is bolted down in the hole where stock l/h mirror originally was....use it for lighting Marlboro's going down the road

Thanks guys! Now I got some idea's. The wires come off so I can easily extend them. I think I will either drill a hole somewhere under the fly screen or make a bracket and mount up front. Then run the wires back to the battery. Short term, I'll most likely put it under the seat for my bike trip this weekend.

I'd rather have it live all the time then try and fiddle with it and have it power off when the key is turned. Not to mention it would drain the battery alot more just to charge a phone with the key on. Thanks again.

I think you would be surprise how quickly you can drain a motorcycle battery.

Actually everything you mentioned usually can be charged through a USB Port. It's certainly smaller and less intrusive then a cig lighter. You'd only need to wire up the 12 and ground wires (super easy) and there you have it! a USB port you can mount anywhere. You could even do a dongle and not really even hard mount it.

(But then again...those are my plans)

Well all my devices use a different mini USB. My V9 Phone changed their standared mini USB plug into some shaped mini usb, my IPOD doesnt use usb for charging unless you plug it into a PC. My Camera is a standard male cig plug, and havent got a GPS just yet. For universail use the cig lighter is the best route. I did however test inserting it into the fuse panel into the ignition fuse and that would turn it off and on.

Well having to have the key turned (lights on etc.) to charge something would certainly drain the battery faster then just charing a phone with key off dont you think? Besides that, I would most likely be charging stuff while riding.

Thats friggen awesome. Now if I just dumped the bitch on the back, I'd have room.

Haha, I do have a motorcycle trailer, but I think my firebolt would look pretty silly with a ball hitch.

a USB port you can mount anywhere. You could even do a dongle and not really even hard mount it.

That is exactly what I have done. I have a mini usb charger that powers all my goodies (some need an adapter)

I would agree, but it would be foolish for you to leave anything charging on your bike while unattended. Someone will walk off with your toy.

But all it takes is one time forgetting to unplug something. Coming out to a low/dead battery is not fun.

I used the power from the City light to create a nice switched source.
In a pinch (say while getting fuel) I can turn on the parking light to continue powering my toys.
