I was just curious at what rpm people travel at as a average. I ride an 04 XB12R and I find myself at usually 3500 to even 4000 rpms.
Sounds like more than a few people ride at about 2000 to 3000 tops. I dont quite get this. I can feel my bike pretty much bog down at those rpms. I feel like I am sacrificing all my power at that low an rpm also. Not so much 3000 but definately at 2000.

2500-3000 for me. Usually closer to 3000.

I cruise at

Highway: 3500-4000 RPM in 5th gear which is around 65-75 mph.

City: 3000-3800 RPM in which every gear is appropriate for the speed limit.

I found for my bike between 3-4000 RPM is where it feels like it is happy. Minimal vibration, steady smooth sound.

I cruise around 2500 when the gearing allows for it. No lugging, the bike is perfectly happy and making plenty of power.

I try and keep it around 3500 to 4000. In traffic more towards the 4000 mark. Just so I can have the power when I need it.

I just got back from lunch and noticed that 3500 to 3600 rpms in 2nd is what I will ride at 40 mph.(in town) I also sit at about 4000 to 4500 on the highway in 5th at about 75-80 mph. Cant help but ride fast, its what keeps other people away from me.
I tried to do 2500 rpms at lunch coming up on my house in a 35 mph zone, and had a real hard time with third gear not bringing me down to the speed. I hardly touch the throttle and she wants to party. Guess I can live with the 4000 mark, she wants to anyhow.

Jeff,

It depends on how fats I'm going. I don't look down to much at the gages anymore but 50 miles an hour I'm in 4th gear and my rpm's our about 4000 or a little higher. Next time I ride I will take a closer look just for my own knowledge.

After the open air box mod I seem to really need to stay up on the RPM's. I think I will cover all the holes up and see how that goes. I don't have 70.00 dollars to spend on a maybe when it comes to having the TPS done.

Always the lowest gear that keeps the rpms'
above 3500

2500 RPM minimum before downshifting, usually closer to 3000 or slightly above. I'll start looking for more gears if I'm cruising close to 4000 RPM.

Around 4,000. I've got XB9 primary gearing, so if I'm on the interstate, it's closer to 4,500.

It depends on how fats I'm going.

Hey!

I usually run 80-90. That's between 4,000 and 5,000 RPMs.

I try to keep the 12R above 3500 RPM. It seems happiest between 3500-4000 for cruising.

3-4.5K makes my 12R happy and my mirrors clear -- any lower than that and the engine seems to get twitchy, and below 2.5K it is lugging, unless I am at high speeds (highway).

I was riding today thinking about this (with my new earplugs) and I noticed that I ride differently without the noise -- I kept the bike in a higher rev range than usual and the bike rode smoother -- really nice. This kinda cements my opinion that many people who ride Buells ride it "soft" and in the lower than optimum rev ranges because they instinctively shy from the loudness of the exhaust, especially when you mount a after market muffler. Add to this the XB bikes are geared and engined pretty radically differently from any other "sport" type bike and I think it is pretty understandable -- on you average metric you don't cruise in the top of the middle third of the tach and even at near lugging RPMs the XB has as much or more torques than most other bikes so you don't have to keep the RPMs high to ride it.

Around town or when I'm "cruising" I keep it around 2500-3000. When I'm "cruising" through the twisties, I keep it around 3500-4000.

When I'm out enjoying the bike, it doesn't come below 4000..

Highway 4200 rpm
Back roads 4800-5500
Dirty roads 1500-3900 depending on traction and terrain.

I'm usually between 3.5 and 4k just running around town. 2nd or 3rd gear.

My XB is generally unhappy lower than 2,500.

After putting the idle circuit into open loop. Doing the square idle enrichment. Advancing the lower RPM/TPS timing curves as suggested by someone who use to post on Bad Web.

The bike now runs fantastic down to 1800 to 2000 RPM in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear.

Even though it runs great, I usually keep it at 3K or higher.

Props to Kevin's pipe: I can thud around smoothly at 2k and still accelerate well, but shake and lug below 1600 or so. But on the highway (if I haven't been counting) I keep kicking for 6th cuz 4500 seems high and there's definitely torque enough for a taller gear. (ohwell, still getting 50+ mpg so it can't be all that "wrong" a gear)

I cruise at the highest gear I can and not lug the engine. I try to keep it above about 1800.

Of course if I need power I'll run a lower gear but aside from that fuel economy and power aren't my primary concern... Wear and tear is. The lower the RPM's you run the longer the engine lasts, the cooler it runs etc.

I like between 4.2K and 4.5K Often I cruise on the slab at ~5k in 4th gear which puts me right at about 90 MPH. (about 5 mph faster then the average cager in my neck of the woods)

2500-3300 rpm when not accelerating. If I need more power, its only one click away. Heck on normal riding I shift at 4k where some of you guys normally ride at.
