Ordered those mirrors and took my first long ride on the bike today since the weather was decent. I'm not sure if the broken exhaust is jacking with the air fuel ratio, or it's just the cold, but there is a little bit of a stumble under throttle in the middle of the rev range.

No it's been too cold to ride here. I'll be taking it around to an exhaust shop this week sometime. I got the mirrors in the mail and they seem really nice too i'll install those this week as well.

Painted the headlight bezel with just some old plasti dip I had sitting around and shot this pic:

Don't matter - running Dunlops, just kick the bike over and walk away. Everything else is a waste of time till you get rid of those tires.

k guys, time for a new clutch. So my question to you all is which is better for an everyday commuter. All Steel, Carbon Fiber, a mix of the two. There is several different ones on E-pay and some are 5 plates with a diaphragm clutch spring, others are 6 steel plates with no spring? And it looks like I will need a Clutch Spring tool?

What's the homemade PVC one? And do I really need carbon fiber mixed in if I'm still just commuting and not really hot rodding?

All -

The time has come for me to say goodbye to my venerable Blast. . . Putting it in Craigslist in the Denver-metro area today. I still have some of the Thor's Keepers patches if anyone is interested in either.

Hey everybody. New to the forum, and fairly new to the BLAST and to riding (last year). Just wanted to say hello. Also a big thanks for all the helpful posts I've read on here over the past year, before signing up.

Yeah - the Dunlops will bite ya, suck as a tire. If your doing roads like that then use the Pirelli ST66 in the over sizes - they fit and will last you a while as well.

ARG, well I have another issue with my Frankenstein motor. The valve retainer on the exhaust valve broke and sent lovely pieces of metal into the oil pump. ARG!!! This caused the oil pump to lock up and destroy the oil pump drive gear.

Has anyone ever added a screen to the sportster oil pump?

As Conwaybrew, I will be leaving the Blast brotherhood in the flesh. My roommate needed an economical way to get to work, so I have (and it took some serious brewing)come to part with my beloved Piglet. I have been a stranger as of late due to my dedication to, as Swampy might add some (spit)to, softail and custom pro street. The good thing is Piglet will still be in my barn, just rode by a new rider. I have enjoyed and learned so much from the chats here and will convey this wealth pot to Piglets new rider. I'll probably check in periodically to see what's up and maybe add some words of wisdom. (If I can find them!) Thank you EZ, Eric, Swampy and all those who have helped those of us of lesser knowledge get there start to Blasting. I loved every second spent on this bike, and will get to occasionally ride it some more, I hope.

Sorry to hear it C-brew. I may be bowing out for a while as a friend needs a good bike for a long commute and isn't comfortable with a Ninja 500 her fiance is offering her. Figure within a year I'll likely have it back as she gets used to riding the 60 miles to work and wants more speed.

Need help!!! I bought a 03 buell blast and it would only start using starting fluid. I bought a dynojet recal kit and put in the specifications that the instruction sheet provided. 170 main jet and the needle jet third from the top with the shims on top. Changed the spring and drilled the idle mix 2.5 out, Drilled the slide and now it will not start. It is running too lean? I am just a novice but I did just as the sheet said. It is getting fuel. I can see it in the intake mani when I remove the carb. When it did start it wouldn't stay running just die instantly. I have changed the plug and it is getting spark. With help it will start (starting fluid but it backfires through the carb. I have to hold the throttle on to keep it running at all. Any suggestions??? I am using the stock 42 pilot jet but I purchased the 45 pilot jet. I have tried moving the position on the needle and still no help. The bike sat for 2 years and the carb when I opened it up didn't look too bad for sitting. I think drilling the slide was a mistake... seams to be running way too lean. pull the plug and there is no black and it doesn't even smell of gas.

Man - that's fubar - we always recommend against the DJ kit, and you went whole hog, and drilled stuff, etc. - with no research? Amazing - replace carb.

Change the pilot jet. Thats the only thing, other than the enrichner/choke circut that's involved in starting. The slide isn't moving, and the main doesn't get involver till off idle. Bad/old gas plugs up the pilot in a hurry if the sit. You do not need a complete carb, worst case would be a new slide assembly.

That's true, still pricey.
Good job catching that. Yeah - one of those rebuild kits with a new slide so you can replace the other few o-rings and such.

We'll have to get used to that rebuilding, if the alcohol content gets any higher.

Since you had the slide out maybe you pinched the diaphragm?
Then I would say bad gas.
The Dyno Jet kit uses a new emulsifier tube that is threaded for the Mikuni carb jets.
The 170 main may be too small, you may need something like a 250 I don't know I'm just guessing on the jet size.
Just idling the main jet is not going to matter, I would make sure the piolet jet is a 46 or 47 depending...

Good news or bad news? My streetBlast started today after 6 months of sitting since the ignition died on the way up the ramp of the moving truck. Now I can't diagnose the problem because nothing is wrong!
Of course it's a moot point now since there's a blizzard blowing across my front lawn : (
