Need advice, I found a Blast through a mutual friend located about 60 miles away.
It was a Riders Edge bike that this person has now owned for about 2-1/2 years.

Its bone stock and the mileage is just under 2,500.
Garage kept never ridden in the rain.
All new black body work, no scrapes on it anywhere according to the owner.

Don't know much about a Blast, anything in particular I need to be aware of?

Thanks James

What are you willing to pay for it?

Prices are all over the board on Blasts.

So $500-$5000 is the range.

"Prices all over the board."

I thought I gave a reasonable description for info I got from my call to the seller.

How many miles? Reread my original post.

"What are you willing to pay for it."

$1600 is the asking price,..... which is about my monthly beer and cig. allowance.

Maybe I should have asked this question on the main quick board.

Hmmm ... $1600, and if the engine is worn out (at 2500, I doubt it) you can sink another $800-$1200 for a 515cc kit, and you still have a good price. So, I say:

+1 on Swampy's response.

Knowing the asking price makes things much easier. Buy it!
You didnt mention the year. Subtract about $400 a year for how old it is. 2008=$4100, 2007=$3700, 2006=$3300, 2005=$2900, 2004=$2500, 2003=2100,2002=$1700, 2001=1300.
Thats ballpark. Prices can vary wildly depending on the time of year, location, condition, modifications, color, accessories, etc.
Pros are it is very low mileage and stock. Cons are its a Riders Edge bike, which means lots of people have ridden/learned on it.

"Maybe I should have asked this question on the main quick board."Yeah, thats insulting. You asked in the right place. Most dont give a mouses donkey about the Blast.

"You didn't mention the year."

Come on guys reread the title of this thread.
I drink lots of beer but always read a thread at least twice before replying.

"Yeah, thats insulting."

I asked HERE because I like you also own and ride a red headed step child ('00 X1) and came across this Blast the other day and it sounds like a good deal/steal to me.

Thanks for the replies.

The reason for hesitation here is because it is a Riders Edge bike - my main concern would be transmission - ride it and see how well it shifts - all other problems can be fixed with at most 350 bucks - but a tranny problem involves spitting the cases - your a Buell Tuber rider and the Blast tranny is a tubber tranny sans trapdoor - so it should shift similarly - like I said - everything else would be relatively simple to fix. That is a good price for an o3 because they had all the updates.

My bad!
I remembered reading the year somewhere, but kept rereading your post and it wasnt there.
Everybody who responded here, reads every post on the Thumper side, plus a few threads elsewhere (at least one reading several other boards too). I usually read them as e-mails and sometimes posts are edited by the time I can read them here. Obviously, sometimes we miss things.

Let us know if you buy it.

James,

$1600 for a 03 Blast? Jump on that with both feet. I paid $2400 for my 04 and I feel like I got a pretty good deal. In my area Kelly Blue Book values an 03 Blast at $2550. It won't be that much different in Kansas.

I wouldn't worry about it's former life as a RE bike. These things are very tough and well built. I've had mine for about 4 months now and I love mine. You'll love yours too.

Dude! Get it. I just paid $3000 for my 2005 with 2k miles on it. 2500 is just barely broken in. You may see how long its been sitting, etc, but I would jump on that.

Price sounds great if it rides out ok with no obvious problems. I paid 2600 for a 05 with under 200 miles recently. That price is more like what they were going for before gas prices started going through the roof.

The seller was supposed to email pics. Friday night or Saturday.

He didn't send them till about 7:00 this evening, seller said he forgot....sheesh.

Kinda pi$$ed me off, anyway I'm headed to Minnesota tomorrow to pick up my new to me '01 S3T to add to my collection.

When I get back home Wednesday I plan on calling him back(the Blast owner) to make arrangements to see it first hand and decide then whether I still want it or not.

Need to get some shut eye, tomorrows going to be a long day.

Thanks for all the replies.

You could give a little more for the low mileage, PS intake, rearsets, if in very good condition, the right colour and the rocker cover gasket was done. Even more if they still have the stock Y-frames and airbox to go with it (you could then recoup some of the money selling the rearsets and intake). $2000 would be top dollar if it had everything I listed and you really wanted it. My opinion.

If you get it, and a bolt breaks on the front (it will!), make sure you get the Buell part, and not just a "grade 8" or something. At 1300 miles, it has the paper rocker box gaskets. At around 5-6K, it'll start leaking, and within 500 miles, it'll be gushing. It's a fairly easy fix to change out the gaskets. With those two fixes, it will put up with a lot of abuse.

I have an "01" I replaced the rocker gasket @2700mi. But what bolt are you talking about?

On the front of the head, there are two bolts connected to a bracket that goes up into the frame above the head. The left side bolt tends to break. You can usually get it out with an EZ-out when it breaks. If you can get a backward-twist drill, when you try to drill it out, it'll probably just come unscrewed. If a dealer replaces it, they'll want to try different bolts laying around in the shop. They'll ALL break! If you find yourself with a broken bolt, order the part by its part number from the latest parts catalog. I believe they now come with yellow thread lock already applied.

Yes they have slightest revers break in the threads to make it hard to back out, thus making it tricky to get out - that bolt went through 3 revisions - I'm still on number two revision - once on each bike - lol

As for a 2000 Blast - my price would be over half again in the asking - lol - my bike's special - it all depends on the care, mileage, knowledge or craziness of the past owner as well - my 2000 only had a little over 4000 miles when I got it - maybe closer to 5000 - by 9 previous beginner owners - lol - they where not gentle miles - sigh - but in the end it was a hell of a deal due to the store extended warranty that went with the bike for the next 2 1/2 years - sigh - she's a loud ass hummer now though! Boot Scooten boogie - lol - and I plan to put the CR clubmans on as well - she should be tight then - just know they'll lock the 1125 being of simular width - not counting pods.

Mine appears to be a normal bolt. It didn't have any thread-lock or anything like it. I didn't put any on when I tightened it, either. I did oil the washer, though!

Well, I had good luck that day. If you have a light touch, and the EZ-out isn't moving the bolt, I suppose you should stop twisting before it breaks off in the bolt. It does seem to work with those standard bolts that the dealers like to use that don't last long.

Please dont tell me your going to replace your bolts? "If it aint broke, dont fix it" was never more true than with the front engine mount bolts. Leave well enough alone as they arent guaranteed to break (even if you reuse them).

What Erik said! A thousand Blasts may have the old and inferior bolt, but it's unlikely that even one will break.

Please note: the above numbers have not been statistically verified.
