I was wondering if anyone ever replaced the main gas tank with something other than the stock Blast tank. Or if anyone has any ideas what might fit on the stock frame. Thanks.

Are you in need of one or are you just thinking?

The Blast tank is pretty much perfect for function. The fuel is down low where the weight needs to be.

If you find one that holds more gas and fits about the same, I would be interested. The current one is about a gallon smaller than I would like.

there are exletnal aux tanks that you can bolt on to add a gal or 2 to any bike. summit has some jr drag fuel cells that may fit under the rear fender. I was looking into it to increase range, but decided the extra weight wasent worth it to me.

Hey Gbaz,

Yeah, if my trip this summer works out I'll probably do an aux tank for hwy 50. One of my friends had to beg gas on that one. It would be really nice to get a tank that is like stock, but maybe 3/4" wider and 1" taller and would let you hold the extra gas in the tank. When getting the Blast, it didn't seem a big thing to have so small a tank, but it does bug me.

As it turns out, my ride to Santa Rosa,CA may be in the car as my wife wants to go too. Can't quite see 2 up on the Blast for 4500 miles.

i could not find a tank anywhere near the stock shape for a bolt on replacement. In one of the threads here they talk about using boiling water and compressed air to expand the stock tank, but then the cover probably would not fit back on (and you would get less than an extra quart i bet). Finding a tank close to the size of the rear fender to bolt on and plumb into the stock system would probably be easer and look better than having a tank sitting on the tail.

I'm thinking one of those tanks would fit right where my air box used to be. I'd have to add some sort of a fuel pump to it, and have it push the fuel back into the main tank. Gotta watch that it only gets turned on when the main tank is almost empty. Just an idea ...

Swampy, I am just thinking. I appreciate everyone's responses. I am not trying for more fuel storage just a different look. I missed the responses, I was not receiving the emails. I will have to just experiment, I have an old old Yamaha tank, I will see how it matches up. I let "ya'll" know. Since the snow still has not melted in this part of Michigan, I have time.....

I've often given the tank on my '90 FXR a sideways glance and wondered if it would fit on my blast. Both bikes have a large square backbone and the length looks right. Mounting would be a challenge, I'd be hesitant about welding on something that is actually an oil tank, you know fire risk and all. If you use the low seat or modify the tall seat it could work. I have no doubt that the center of gravity would be raised a couple of inches. The Fxr has a 4 gallon capacity. that would be a net gain of 1.2 gallons.

Thanks alot Slowhand96. That is definately a starting place. I will check into it. I do use the low seat so that is no big deal. Net gain of more gas is only a plus I suppose too. I will let all know.

OK, can't find the proper place to put this question:

When I took the gas tank off, the directions instruct to remove mounting ring from around threaded hole (p. 4-5 of service manual, 200 of PDF).

I didn't have a ring there. There was a ring toward the bottom of the threading when i got the cover off.

From the parts manual (p. 54) no additional ring is called for. The ring I removed seems to be stretched too wide to put it where it is called for (see p. 64-65).

Question:

Am I correct in the assumption that there is just one plastic ring that is to be installed around the threading, and the ring is installed on top of the tank cover?

I'm also assuming who ever had this bike apart last put it together wrong.

Yes, you are correct.
Tank cover, plastic ring, dipstick.

There is some discrepancy on how the ring is installed. For simplicity sake, just install it wide part down.
If I believe Berkshire (and I do) the ring installs with the small part fitting into the tank cover and the wide part holding it down. It is, however, almost impossible to get this accomplished. You'll have enough trouble just getting the tank trim ring down! Just do it the easy way.

It rocks that you actually quote the parts book and manual and actually use them. That makes it so much easier to help someone online! (unfortunately the parts books differ from year to year. The diagrams are the mostly the same but pages and numbered sequence of parts may differ. It still helps though).

I'm replacing the main fuel valve: PN M0693.T.

I will also replace the O-Ring: PN P0301.8

Can anyone think of anything else I'll need to be replacing? Or any special tips/precautions?

Does a new filter strainer come with the new fuel valve assembly? (See p. 68-69 parts manual, Title = Fuel Tank)
