Hey Everyone,

Just a quick note about checking the primary chain on the Blast. I bought my '06 with 1600 miles on 1 Nov and thought the cold weather was making it cranky and loud. Turns out it still had the factory shim on the primary adjuster bolt after the dealer supposedly did the 1000 mile service. Anyway, adjusted it by ear and now it is really quiet without the clunking and rattles. It made a huge difference. Next up is to change all the oils.

So far it has acquired a set of CR high bend dirt bike bars, heated grips and a Corbin seat. It is comfy with that stuff. Now to get it to run well and then the Works suspension.

Do any of you guys have trouble with bottoming out with the aftermarket exhausts? Seems like I smack the stock one about once a week. Maybe it is too many years of riding dirt bikes.

Have a happy day and don't forget to adjust that primary chain.

Paul

Same for me. I paid all that money for the 1000 mile checkup, and the spacer was still there.

My exhaust pipe has hit a couple times in hard right turns with minimal damage. It's usually in a vigorous foot-peg scraping turn with a bump when I hear a "clang!"

I think the stock exhaust withstands the beating best though.

What a difference adjusting the primary makes in total drivability!

I've been spending so much time fixing up and selling my other two blasts and keeping Gina's sporty in tune that I have been ignoring the blast that has become my daily rider. Tonight, just out of boredom, I thought I'd pay a little attention to my blast. The primary bolt still had the spacer on it (this should have been done long before I got the bike) so I took a couple wrenches to it.

I did the "by ear" method and set it between the knock sound and the whirrrrr sound. What a world of difference that made!!!!!!

It shifts cleanly and crisply and doesn't hang up in neutral anymore.

Finding neutral when I want it is easier.

The bike is much more tolerant of being lugged, it no longer shakes and rattles like it is going to come unglued if I get to slow for the gear.

Feels smoother on take offs.

It's like a new bike! Whoo hoo!

I'm new to motorcycles and need some help. What are the steps to adjusting the primary? What do I have to remove and how is it done? The more detail the better or pictures would be great because this is my first time working on my 04 Blast and the manual really doesn't help that much for a newbie like me. Any hints or tips would be great too! Thanks

Welcome TP!
Couldnt give you better procedure than the manual.
Get a 'crows foot' socket for the adjuster bolt (if you still have the stock exhaust).
If a 24 inch lbs torque wrench cant be found, the 25inch lb Craftsmen torque wrench can be set at 24 in lbs.
7-8 flats instead of 4 or 5 (as the manual says).
Realistically, unless you ride really hard or the bike has sat for a long period or is brand new, the chain rarely ever needs adjusting (but it must be adjusted from the factory setting).
Follow the tips per the link EZ posted.

Hello TP welcome to badweb!

I've been having the same type of issue with my primary chain getting loose. I think it's mainly from the fact that I tend to ride hard most of the time.

So it looks like the bolt is on the outside of the primary case from the picture in the manual... so I don't have to open the primary case, correct? What steps do I take to adjust it... do I need to loosen the jam nut or just bring the chain limiting screw to 24in-lbs the back it off 3/4 of a turn. Or should I just adjust it by ear which seems to be a common choice? There is to much different info spread across to many different threads to get a complete idea of what to do for a n00b. Thanks guys.

If I can get mine done right I'll make a step by step tutorial for ya TP but atm I think I'm as lost as you ;)

After riding for a half hour - with bike running and wheels chocked and in neutral - Loosen the jam nut all the way to the adjustment bolt head without turning the adjustment bolt, adjust the bolt looser till you hear noise then adjust up about 5-8 flats - noise should disappear - if not then adjust until it does and add 3 to 5 flats, then - holding adjuster bolt from moving - tighten jam nut - done.

Just another "GUESS" adjustment !!!

Wonder when the "GUESS ADJUSTERS" are going to learn how to adjust the BLAST Primary Chain CORRECTLY ???

"HINT", it is not in the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL !!!

He says that as often as Court says remind me to tell you the story - and then forgets to tell you - as usual - put up on the topic or shut up on it - I too would like to know your method - you have yet to divulge it. My method puts it on the loose side, however, it also makes it easy to adjust on the fly.

Thanks EZ thats what it looked like but I wanted to make sure before doing anything that might damage the chain. What is the sound I'm looking for? Can it be on kickstand or does it have to be upright?

Buellistic do you use another method?

The sound is that of a box of rocks/loud whirring - you adjust loose till a change in sound then go back till it disappears and then about 5 flats more - how I do it.

Do your Blasts all rattle pretty loud even with the primary adjusted as per the various ways? Mine is pretty loud at 30 in 3rd sort of RPM no matter which method I've used. As in louder than the engine noise with the stock muffler. It is quiet when accelerating or going up hill, but makes a racket just easing along on the flats.

Thanks.

Concur! Also, many other parts tend to rattle with lugging.

I was thinking that 3rd at 30 isn't really lugging, then I went for a ride today and paid attention. It didn't really seem so much like lugging as it did like strong, low RPM vibrations.
