Has anyone tried the Pirelli ST66 tires in the 110/80-16 front and 130/80-16 rear yet? The tread looks good to me and I was hoping someone else would try them first.

PS. I don't have a car any more so my bike goes all terrain alot and also a lot of 2 up riding.

Pirelli scooter tires have never had a good rep, unlike their mc tires which rock, so unless it is a totally new tire style - I wouldn't bother with them.

OK my luck has run out with tires. Anyone who is familiar with my (limited) posts knows I have had great mileage with tires. The Avons by far gave me the most miles.

However, when I went in for new rubber last time the Avon Tyre was on back order. Finally my need to ride won out and I went with Pirelli. I am not sure what specific Pirelli, my parts man (NOT at HD) just knows my bike and orders what fits.

The Pirelli has already worn out - I do lots of straight road riding, so it just squared off - no rubber center, only 3,200 miles.

Anyone know about Avon availability for the Blast???? Getting ready for summer trip and down to the wire here.

The Avon Vyper Strykes, AM 63, is the way to go, it is a scooter tire size but is good to 100 mph.

I order from Chaparell
The price is up from last time I ordered about $120 for front and rear.
110/70/16 front
140/70/16 rear
With the rear you have to bend your lower shock mount in with a hammer to get the clearance you need.
Remember to check your wheel bearings while you have things apart and be careful with your belt. I think there was a discussion on the Thumper quick board a week or two back with the number for Chaparrel and part numbers

Pirelli's are the best performance tires for the Blast, but wont get you far on mileage.

Chaparral or www.denniskirk.com should also carry the stock size Avons.

Thanks for the info. I do like the Pirelli but it has only been on the bike since late March. I was spoiled getting the high mileage out of tires, having to put new rubber on every 2-3 months will put a hole in my pocketbook for sure.

Since my front tire still looks good, I think I will just put another Pirelli on the rear knowing it will most likely be toast by time I return at the end of June.

Then I will look into the Avon Tyre for front and rear replacement.

Again, I really appreciate all your help and advise.

Hars: The Pirelli MT75's would be it (those are what we race on)!
Avons would be my 2nd choice.

Magster: Take comfort in knowing you'll at least have the best tires available on your Blast!

I agree with the Pirelli MT75 tire people. I put them on my Blast and have been very happy with them. I will stick with them.

Interested in your report on how they feel compared to the stock size (brand?) you were running.
I liked the way the wide Kenda (NLA) felt, took some of the 'twitchiness' out of the bike. I get retired race Pirelli's to run now (free-sorta), so its a hard sell to get me to modify and put on a scooter tire.
Its an even harder sell to put anything but a Pirelli on the front. But I'm interested.

Modify is 5 seconds with a 2lbs sledgehammer really it didn't take any time...they do look nice and given the "scooters" that they were meant to go on are bigger and faster than the Blast I'm not worried about the tires.

I am all over the big Avons, they really do feel smoother, and handle better. I switched bikes with Hardcorps(XB12S) and he said he was suprised how far it would lean over in the corners. He had no chicken strips on his tires and rode my Sporty to about 3/8" from the edge.

My big concern with the mod (as it was years ago with the Dunlop that didnt fit) was cold hammering on a part of the motorcycle that is bolted directly to the engine! Not that I couldnt heat it up or take it off though.
hmmm... free tires-pay for tires-free tires-pay for tires...If I like them I'll have to start paying for tires again.
How about in the rain? (like it ever rains here)

On par with the Pirelli - but you'll never run out of rubber or contact patch, so your aggressive track riding would only get you rubbing your pulley - on one side - Jim folded himself onto the black bike and declined another test ride, staying with the red's more comfortable siting profile, but he still managed to help wear down tire edges. And the life is longer than the Pirelli as well - meaning less wear on the wheel with re-tire mounting as well. Its really not a massive mod and the result - riding the responsive Avons due to LP is quite enjoyable and worth it!

Another Viper review, OK what started out as a good day to scrub in new tires and get a good ride in with my wife went really well for the first hour....then we crossed the rain line and spent 40 minutes covering miles that should only take 10...Between the lack of visibility and having no idea what the tires feel like in the rain. We stopped for brunch at VBC and watched rain band after rain band go by with the 20 or so other motorcyclist all of us nursing our coffee and waiting for sunshine. Sadly my only real impressions of the tires for the first half of our ride were that these tires make the Blast a completely different bike but as to how the conditions didn't support exploring. Finally about 30 minutes after we finished brunch the weather cleared and all the motorcyclist started putting on wet gear and getting on the road. CT169 south is an awesome winding road and within a mile the roads were bone dry and the temp 10 degrees warmer. Finally conditions to play with new tires. Slowly easing into the turns my first thoughts are that turn is way easier but once in its way more stable leaned over than before...rock solid leaning, I quickly out distanced my wife and had to slow down, not that she was slow just that I was riding faster than I should have been. Another thing I noticed The Vipers have a heavier feeling at low speed than the old AM51/52's did, not as nimble under 10mph...not that that it approaches the lead feel that say a gixxer 6 has under 10 but different than I've been used to for the last 22,000 miles. Much smoother on the road and over bumps but when you have more rubber it'll be smoother. I still have 1" chicken strips so I know there is more to explore. Rain performance seems on par with Pirelli's this tire feels very sticky regardless of the conditions. It's raining all day tomorrow so I'm driving; my next ride is Tuesday when I'll be able to ride on roads that I know like the back of my hand....I'll probably write another review then

EZ: LP?? As far as a track tire for me, probably okay, I'm really looking for a street tire. I'm not sure James wants to be the test pilot for pushing the Avons as hard as he pushes them. With tire flex at top speed cornering and tire growth, its a little risky. There is a difference between riding hard all day and 20 minutes unbridled all out racing on the track!
The rear Pirelli only runs out of contact patch if you grind the pulley or maybe use a smaller rear pulley or from tire flex. And I'm guessing if the right size tire flexes then an oversize tire will even more.

I'm not overly concerned that its a huge mod to the swingarm (its not and I've got extra swingarms) I'm just not willing to hammer on it with it bolted to the case, so I'd take it off. Then I can really make it fit (then, of course, tire growth wont matter).

Not concerned with tread mileage and there really isnt any noticeable wear and tear replacing tires (unless you're going to a butcher shop).

I just checked my records on the Little Kids Blast(All bets are off on the Big Kids Blast) and I have a little more than 3000 miles on the 14/70/16 Avon Vyper Stryke rear. It is just getting down to the wear bars.

Even if I only get 4000 miles out of it, I think its the best tire out there for the money (not having tried the free Pirellis that Gearheaderiko gets, LOL)

The Avon really fills out the bike as far as looks go, the handling is a little heavier than the stock sized tires but it makes it a much more stable(predictable) bike in the corners and on the highway.

This week end was 80+ temps at highway speeds and some hard twisties. I got it sideways in a corner in the Tunnel of Trees when I hit a patch of sand in a corner.

LP=low profile! LOL! I figured it had to be obvious, but I couldnt figure out what. Now it makes sense.
Less sidewall, but a taller tire = tire flex, just in a different place.
I did always like the way the big Kenda felt.

How does the front feel?

Some math:
140mm width x 70% = 98mm
120mm width x 80% = 96mm
If those were really true measurements, then the Pirelli has less sidewall.

I did a measurement - remember - here's a copy from a 1/2 used Pirelli vs 100 mile Viperstrike

Ok - I did a rough measure - v vs p - 128.78/121.28 rr and 105.14/102.60fr and clearance from swing arm to tire is 0.309.

Then your going to love the Avon!

OK I am getting roughly double the mileage on the avon as I did on stock dunlop. Have had one close call with avon tires but they saved my butt. Was running dragon, setting up for right hand corner, in front of me was trees and sky, when I hit wet leaves and rear slid. Got rear rolling and still made turn. Pucker factor broke the guage on that one. LOVE the avons.
