Yes - V&H have a quiet core insert as well - however, I was told that it is even more restrictive(read makes the motor even quieter) than the Jardine - so I guess that makes it a toss up - lol

While we are on the topics of V&H, I have a query . . . but, before that, it has been a while and I am glad to be back on the dark side as EZ would say . . . I was looking at the American Sport Bike website and noticed that there are two (2) separate V&H exhaust systems . . . one race only and one street. Anyone know the difference between them? Is the race only able to be used on the street or would that be really bad? Thanks and I will get a pic up soon. I am planning on some cosmetic mods soon (mirrors, turn signals, grips, luggage, etc.) and also want to change the exhaust. Thanks!

I know this is anathema to most riders, but I'm looking for the quietest aftermarket exhaust made for the Blast. I just got an 02 a couple of months ago and have had great fun modding it, but my f'in landlord has given me a hugh ration of shite for the sound and how it vibrates trailers. I currently have both the Pro Series intake and exhaust, though it is easily louder then my old '80 XLH w/ straight pipes that drowned in Hurricane Katrina. I've even heard somewhere that this is supposed to be the quietest, but perhaps the packing was removed or something similar. The carb was rejetted as well, so I don't know if going back to the stock exhaust would work, if I even wanted to do that. I'll be posting pics tomorrow of the bike, just gotta borrow the digicam from work.

Thanx in advance for the suggestions! Namastae!

The pro-series is it. Jetting will have no difference in sound, and I'd leave the 45 primary in anyways if going back to stock, and if your at sea level - I'd leave in the 175 main as well and just bring air screw to 2 1/2 turns out from bottom.

Well, if its louder than your old XL, then I'm guessing its a well worn exhaust. I couldnt hear mine over the most quiet of the Big Twin HD aftermarket exhausts. It does exude a pounding exhaust note, capable of setting off car alarms easily. A Jardine with a quiet core or even the V & H may rattle trailers less. Actually going to any other exhaust will probably rattle trailers less, but they'll complain about the noise.

My advice is to stay with the Pro Series and keep the revs down as even a Big Twin HD (even the XL's) with a stock exhaust will rattle trailers and set off car alarms, your bike just happens to be loud as well.

That's about what I've read around the Net that a Jardine or V&H with the respective quiet modules inserted. Now for the fun part. Is there anybody out there that willing to trade exhausts? I can't say how many miles are on my Pro Series exhaust, there is only 6300 on the bike total, but I suspect it's around 2k on it or so. I know these were discontinued and impossible to find (found that out trying to ID the exhaust to check on the rejetting, already done to the right specs, Shiny!) so I'd rather this loud beast find a suitable home then just sitting in my shed after installing the quieter one. I'm not sure which is the better (power vs. sound vs. etc) with the quiet core, the Jardine or the V&H? No option to go back to stock, it didn't come with the bike.

Also anybody out there have any experience with those milled anti-reversion cones? Seemed a novel idea, so one's on order to find out for myself, figured it can always go back up on ebay to another home if I don't care for it.

Thanx for the info folks, and yes pics will follow once the camera gets back to work.

torque cones give bottom and some mid but robs from top end - don't bother. I'm sure someone would trade you a stock exhaust for the PS quick enough - if thats what you want.

Anti reversion cones are pointless on the Pro Series or stock exhaust as those already have them built into the pipe. It can also have the effect of making it 'thump' more (set off alarms).
IMHO they are snake oil unless you're running a straight pipe.

I'm also very sure someone will trade you a stock exhaust for your Pro Series. I will if none of the more needy speak up. (it'll just sit in the corner where the stocker now sits!)

need part number help please. My dealer will not look stuff up for Buells. I lost the bolt and rubber isolator for the exhaust where it mounts to a bracket near the oil filter. Or if there is a auto parts store alternative... Also, I wish to convert to the pre 2002 third Heim joint that mounts to the horn bracket and the Do Not Remove bracket. Anyone know what part number I will need? Much appreciated!!

So I've manged to snatch up a pro-series exhaust, thanks to ensnaredlight.

My question:

What do I need to install the exhaust? I assume there's some sort of gasket I'll need to buy. Anything I need to know about the mounting hardware? Can it be re-used, or is there something I need to replace? I thought I read a post somewhere that mentioned replacing a clip or pin of some sort, please explain.

Anything else?

Just want to be sure I have everything I need to avoid delays. It takes my dealer a minimum of 2 weeks to do anything......

If it comes with the header mounting flange then you wont need the big c-clip.
If he gave you the complete exhaust, then you shouldnt need anything except loctite and a new gasket(which is sometimes not even necessary).

There is a specific mounting procedure listed in the instructions which I would adhere to given the number of broken exhausts reported (all brands). If you didnt get the instructions I can e-mail or fax them to you.

I also dont believe the instructions say anything about needing to re jet the carb and I know from experience you can get away without doing it, but it is highly recommended. (jetting can depend a lot on altitude, so if you live in the hills you may be better of with the stock main jet. Remember these jet sizes are guidelines. Your needs may differ.

You are installing it yourself?

Yep, I'll do the install myself. The dealer would only screw it up.

I don't have the exhaust yet, he's shipping it to me once he gets his new exhaust installed. I guess I'll find out when I get it. He'll include everything he believes should be included, I just wanted to be prepared.

PLEASE send me the instructions!

I already have the jets 45/175 just need to install them. I'm going to do the rest of the carb mods while I'm at it.

What's the c-clip you mention?

The c-clip is the exhaust flange retaining ring.

I noticed on those pro series instructions, that the part numbers on the exhaust gasket have changed. Were those an update or was the original a typo? I picked up one of the new numbers listed (silvery mild cone thing) for my Jardine exhaust, but it's big enough that I can't even try the cone installed with the header and still have enough threads left to tighten the retainer. The cone might be a moot point then, but just figured that I'd check. Wish I would have asked before ordering it!

Also for anybody out there looking for a quiet exhaust, the Jardine with the silencer insert is Ninja-Quiet. I haven't tried it without the silencer, but I dropped off my rent today while it was idling and the owner thought I had driven there! Will get to sneak check it at work this afternoon, but it's quiet enough that you don't hear it over the wind's roar. Great Success!

Thanx all!

Yes those are typo's.
Did you remove the old exhaust gasket? After some running they look like they are part of the head.

Alright, so the pro-series finally arrived. Not too bad, but there is a good bit of rust bubbling up through the paint. I'll sand it down then I'm gonna send the header to jet-hot to get a nice black matte coating.

Now on to the "muffler". Turns out I can see straight through it. There's no packing or a core of any kind, just completely hollow pipes. One side has a ring that's "welded" in close to the end of the pipe. I'm guessing that was part of the core?

So, how's this gonna sound with straight pipes on it? I'm thinking it's not going to be pleasant. I ride every day rain or shine and I don't want to lose my hearing.

Can we come up with a way to re-pack this contraption? I thought I would just stuff some packing in it, but that was before I saw other mufflers and discovered that there's a hollow core with packing around it......

Whatcha think?

Sounds like somebody gutted the mufflers and unless you weld, I dont think there's a way to fix them.
It will be loud! Earplugs would be beneficial loud pipe or not.
The PS mufflers are Harley style baffle units and were never straight through and are not repackable. You may be able to order new mufflers per the part numbers in the PS instructions. Or use 2 Emgo mufflers ($20 each) strapped together.Using 1 muffler that fit the headpipe would probably be too restrictive and could even decrease power or be just as good as stock (but louder). You could also use 2 straight pipes and put baffles in them. Both should be easy to find and under $40 total.

Now we know why it was so loud.I'm not surprised he got complaints!

Yeah I wasn't too happy when I discovered that. Where would I find baffles to put in the pipes? I suppose it would be easy enough to hack them open and weld 'em back up....

If you want to use 2 straight pipes, baffles can be purchased through places like Dennis Kirk, J & P cycles, Drag Specialties, etc (please check Badweb sponsor list first!).
If you want to use your empty PS exhaust cans, just cut some sheet metal for baffles and weld them in. (generally long cut baloney slices of metal welded at an angle is whats normal. It'll cover most of the inside usually with some holes drilled in it. This is the cheapo aftermarket method used, not what the PS came with. If I have a chance I'll take a picture.)

Another option is to use any muffler that will fit under the Blast and use some exhaust adapters (found at auto parts stores or above mentioned places) to mount it onto the PS header. Used or new HD mufflers, Emgo, V & H or etc will work.

I want to stay with my PS cans.

I did a quick search on the j&p website. are these what you mean I could put into the PS cans?

which baffle would you recommend? I wouldn't know where to start.

Thanks

well after a long day on the range friday taking the Experienced Rider Course I've decided that I don't want to ride for 6 days with my WB (it's just too loud for me and long distances) so I ordered the quite core insert for my Jardine RT1 (brand new and sitting in the garage) I also mailed off my spare WB header to Performance Coatings for a nice grey ice color. Come july I'll be rolling up to my family reunion in a bit of style and quieter than I am right now. Not to say I'm ditching the WB just putting it away for the time being
