I took my wife's Blast out this evening. The SO has moved on to her Ninja 500 as her daily ride so I'm riding the Blast more and more. I have a choice of at least 6 different bikes to ride, but I still choose the Blast for around the town Blasting. It is so much fun. I think I have to repack the Kerker though. It has gotten really obnoxious. It is too loud even with ear plugs. I feel bad for the people around me. Have any of you repacked your mufflers? Do you have any suggestions for making the Kerker a little more quiet? | ||

There are a few good sources for packing, usually you local dirtbike shop has some. I've heard good things about Moose Competition packing. I decided to try this: http://www.racetools.com/loose.html About 20 bucks for 450 grams of the stuff. Shipped for about 8. The moose stuff was a bit more pricey and every where I found it for sale the shipping was a bit spendy too. Besides, being a small business owner myself, I like to support the little guy. Ok did the repacking of the Kerker this weekend. Reduced sound by about 5 percent. I guess it is just a loud can. I did notice a slight increase in low end power, with no real change in the upper RPM's. I took the core out and hacksawed through it in several places with the intent of making flaps (or scoops) that would protrude into the flow of exhaust gases and divert the sound toward the outside of the core into the packing. What I failed to take into consideration was that the core is essentially a highly perforated piece of metal (almost a screen), and my scoops would be useless for diverting exhaust gases since the exhaust gases would go right through them. DUH! My next experiment will be to make a core from scratch and utilize some of these diversions or attach solid sheet metal to the existing scoops. Any thoughts? | ||

Incidentally the stuff I ordered from www.racetools.com was really nice and easy to work with. It looks like it'll take a beating and last. Kudos to them for a quality product. | ||

Johnny, Sounds like you just need to develop your own exhaust from scratch. And being a small businessman you could turn around and sell it to BADWEB members for a discount.LOL!! But seriously if you come up with something that works don't forget to make sure noone else has done the same thing,patent it and either produce it yourself or sell to one of the major exhaust companies. Tnthumper I just might do that. LOL. I can't predict any dyno results, but it's worth a look. I'm just seeking a halfway point for the exhaust note somewhere between stock and obnoxious. As it stands it is almost painful to ride with the Kerker. | ||

Why don't you just hack off the can and mount up a universal supertrapp can. I believe that has been done with good results before. | ||

Ditto on what Naustin wrote. Just about anything can be bolted on once you simplify that pipe. Finding something quiet would be the challenge. The Supertrapp might be if enough discs are taken out. The Jardin also might be with the silencer sleeve installed. White brothers would be, but wont last long. With a simple adapter the Pro Series muffler can be installed! PS Dude are you really running 5w-40 oil? | ||

Not running 5W40 at the moment. Right now I got 20W50 Dino Oil in it. Why is 5W40 bad? I haven't seen anyhting to preclude it. It's a diesel fleet oil and the manual even says to use it in case the "approved" oils aren't available. In the times that I've used it in my XB12R I've noticed it running considerably cooler. | ||

Too thin. My manual says 10w40 below 40 degrees is the thinest. Anything is better than nothing if thats all that available. Thinner oils offer better gas mileage and run cooler but dont offer the protection the engine was designed for. Of course if you were running standard dino 5w-40 oil, it would be just a matter of time before it seized.But the synthetic is way better than that. | ||

Took her out today. It was about 35 degrees. I was bundled in a carhart arctic coat, fleece underneath, carhart fleece lined jeans, and one of those elastic type buff things under my helmet covering most of my face. After a short 25 mile loop I stopped at the local watering hole. Had one guy ask me why Benelli would write "American Motorcycles" on the gas tank. I explained it was a Buell not a Benelli LOL. The Blast was running great. I ripped her up to 80 MPH on a local 2 laner. I even Blasted through a couple of ice patches resulting from water runoff. What a fun bike.  | ||

Steve, Seeing how you have 6 bikes, I think you should hand down the Blast to a broke college student, like myself, wanting to get into riding (especially a Buell), like myself. Actually this message goes to anyone with an extra Blast just laying around, collecting dust that needs a home that will meticulously take care of it and certainly wont abuse it.  -Dusty | ||

Time to revive an old thread. Today I took my first ride of the year on my Blast. The ice is off the alley enough to FINALLY get out. The snow bank in front of the garage with the Blast was taller than I was, but now is short. No pictures, but it was mud or snow everywhere it wasn't paved. Anyway, here is the low down on my winter mods after a brisk 75 miles at 45 degrees. Mostly running around 60-65mph on back road with some stretches over 80mph and a lot of slow going to avoid gravel patches where the road broke up over the winter. The Jardine with quite core, K&N and rejet combo runs great. It is not very loud at all. It seems to rev better, but not sure how much extra power it has since it doesn't have the big windshield now and I lost 20lbs over the winter. Those all sort of add up to make it feel a lot faster. Rebuilding the primary and clutch was a HUGE difference. It shifts great and doesn't make any nasty noises anymore. Removing the big Buell windshield was a good thing. The fly screen blocks more wind than I thought it would. The CRG bar end mirrors are good. A bit smaller than stock for seeing things, but not all blurry and not just the sleeve of my jacket. Other than that, it was great to ride again. It purrs right along at 65mph up and down the 6-8% grades and handled some pretty big frost heaves pretty well. The heated grips still rock. You know - buying a house is a costly thing - I have thought several times that I would have to sell one of the bikes to make all the fees, but so far I have dodged that bullet and the other people involved tell me there should be no more fees - sigh - I'm hoping I can believe them. Riding to work today - I really enjoyed the bike, even the couple of folks with hands over their ears did not detour me - enjoying the curvy roads and cutting through traffic - a commute I'll miss when I move, however, the joy of owning a home will have to take its place and the occasional sunny day commute from my home will have to do. The commuter was in great form and the ride brought smiles both ways - all that work finally paying off, both bikes just good honest fun - a better errand runner and back up you could not find - every other person who ever rode it has had nothing but good to say about them - both bikes are now both exceptional compared to regular Blasts - Erik of SFMC now says he'd like to race either bike, it used to be he only wanted Vader - good praise indeed! I'll have a large two car garage to fit 2 bikes and a Honda Civic SI to fit into it - plenty of room to build a workshop around, build another bike, a press, lift, etc. - and soon enough another Buell or two - lol EZ (Message edited by ezblast on March 19, 2008) | ||

theres never enough room, and even after u get the house youll still have plenty of things u need to buy and do (paint and so forth) Bought my house 3 years ago and the wife has a list from here till doomsday of things she wants done.... |
