31 degrees here this morning, looking at the 20's in the next couple days. It gets me to thinking about winter escapes and where's a good place to take a couple or three weeks to get away from the sub-zero climes of the northern great plains.

Personally I think Mexico sounds like a wonderful idea, but the wife refuses to contemplate piloting a vehicle (2 or 4 wheel) down there. She's such a big sissy.

Any thoughts on destinations in the USA?

texas has just about everything. big bend is real nice in november. the scenic loop around fort davis is tits up. you can ride from there down to del rio and ride or walk across the border to ciadad acuna and visit the bar were they filmed desporado. lots of cool shopping there too. just stay away from dallas. this place is boring, but just about every were else in texas has great riding.

Ever consider a Snowmobile Tour of Newfoundland?

Plenty of tour operators here that offer reasonable rental units, guided tours.

Uh Newfie, if I wanted a snow machine I could do it right here in Montana. That's one of the problems w/ snowmobiles and sailboats, the only time you can take them out the weather is so crappy you don't want to be in it. Sigh, the perils of a northern rural existance.

When it's Winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it's Summer in Australia. If you go north from Brisbane to Cairns in February, you would have an Adventure you'd be talking about for at least 10 years.

Crusty, any idea what it costs to ship a bike to Oz? Would love to go there, actually have enough air-miles for two free tickets plus the 1st class upgrade, so the only major expense would be taking the bike along for the ride.

Hmmmm, wonder what Momma would think of that?

Rek, I air freighted a '79 Sportster to Brisbane in February of '97 from Boston. It cost about $2,000.00 for freight alone. I "sold" it to my friend there, which led to a real nightmare of sales tax, fees, duties, inspections etc., etc.,ad nauseum. I don't know what fees and changes you'd have to make, but after the circus I went through, I'd recommend buying or renting a bike over there. However, if you're thinking about going to Australia and traveling by bike, do it! I give you my personal guarantee that you'll absolutely love it.

Yeah, yeah, Glitch. Been there done that (brrr). After my divorce an '84 Honda V45 was my sole means of transportation for 18 months, starting in November. I actually had a lot of fun that year.

I'm thinking of a mid-Feburary trip. The days are still short and cold and the blues have set in for real...The perfect time for a warm weather, sunny days kind of escape. A reminder of things to come.
