I just got off work and went and got some gas at the base service station. Not 15 ft from the pump after getting gas by bike cuts out. 2002 M2. I try starting it again and about after 20 seconds of running it cuts out again. I try turning it off and starting it again same problem. After doing this a couple of times a guy walks up to me and says it sounds like I got a clogged filter. Good luck for me I am not to far from work so I limp the bike back here to get some advice from the guys at work. One of my coworkers used to work on motorcycles and thinks it could be something up with the carb. Is there anything I can do right now to fix the problem so I can get home, or should I just say fuck it and load it up in a truck and take to HD before I go home.

Please help BADWEB.

Sidestand switch acting up? Two wire switch that has caused similar results.

Personally I don't think it's be a fuel prob. Mine met it's demise at a gas station as well and my initial thoughts were fuel.

Dave

Any thing I can do to fix it if it is the kickstand switch.

Thank you for your help.

Unplug the small plug down at the sidestand and make a jumper to connect the two wires together (wire harness side).

Feel free to drop me an e-mail.

I'm not saying to cut on the bike wire harness side. I cut the two wires on the switch side of the little white plug, stripped 'em back a bit and twisted them together. Later on I used a crimp-on wire connector.

Sgt: I'm with Dave, it's probably the sidestand switch. But if jumpering around the switch doesn't fix it, it's possible you got some water in that tank of gas. See if your carb. has a drain plug on the float bowl-- if it does drain a cup or so into a clean container and check for little globs of water on the bottom. If you find any, you may have to remove the tank and drain it completely.

Good luck!

From the test riders standard issue tool kit...

Left: Universal Harley-Davidson Key

Right: Buell Sidestand Correction Device

Jumpers

Find the switch near the sidestand pivot.
Pull the plug in connector apart.
Cut off the short end that goes to the SIDESTAND (not toward the harness)
Strip the ends of the wire
Twist them together (get as anal with solder and shrink wrap and you want...anything works)Plug it back in where you found it.
Make sure you left no loose ends from the sidestand that might interfere.
Go merrily on your way.

Did you FILL it?
Loosen your fuel cap a bit so that air can get in and try it again.

I'm with Peter, is the gas tank venting?

Fuel line pinched? Gas on all of the way? - not intended to offend. Sounds like maybe the bike is draining the carb's float bowl and then not getting enough fuel.

It could be dirty gas. Avoid going to a gas station where they have either just filled or are filling the tanks. All kinds of sludge is stirred up at the time & is picked up by the pumps. Could be water, could be crap plugging your carb or it could be the side stand switch.

Dyna it really is not true about avoiding gas stations when they are filling there tanks.I used to think the same way until last year seeing exactly how those pumps function these day's.My brother own's a Mobil and Sin Clair station and the state is really on top of you changing the filters at the pump's for each individual type of gas,and they know when they are done or not.Because these pumps are computer controlled and if they start getting dirty(the filters) the state is monitoring this. They basically know everything that goe's on with the fuel at all time's but so doe's the gas station owners.

Hey all thank you for the advise, but I headed out at about 0830hrs to HD this morning from work.

I did take off the gas cap to make sure it was not the vent and that didn't seem to help.

Sorry I couldn't stick around at the time to receive this advise, but I am on 12hr shifts and had to work tonight. After all was said and done, what with loading the bike on a co-workers truck and getting to HD, I didn't get home till 1100hrs so I got about 5 hours of sleep.

The HD mech thinks it might be a clogged vent line or the ignition coil. Have to wait till Monday when the Buell mech comes to work. Luck for me I am off for a change that day.

I do however want to thank all you very much for the advise. I will post here when I find out exactly went wrong with my baby.

Checking for spark is the first thing I'd do. If its not firing, make the jumper wire for the sidestand switch. If its still not firing I would suspect the cam pick-up to be at fault before the ignition coil. If it IS firing, go after the fuel system ;)

My money is on a clogged vent hose. The ONE time I Buell has died on me was in 1995. I'd just fueled in the Finger Lakes region of New York, headed from Clevland to Virgina, via Buffalo.

I left the gas station in the searing heat and made it about 1 mile when the engine cut out. I got off, looked at the bike and saw that when I'd remounted my tank bag after fueling, I'd pinched the hose.

Symptoms were precisely as you described. Keep us posted.

Court

P.S. - I was stopped an hour later near Binghamton, but that was by a trooper in a Mustang and unrelated to fuel starvation. :) This was the GREAT "Buell Brochuere" story.

Sgtbuell: It is not a pinched vent, because you can ride at least 600 Ft. even with a closed gas tap. With a dying coil you can have the situation that the engine stalls when you open up the throttle and the RPMs are going up. Very carefully riding on low throttle/low RPMs can bring you maybe a few miles further then.

Well I'm picking up my bike tomorrow morning. It has been there for two weeks now. I'm not going to go through the laundry list of what they thought the problem was.

It turns out that in the end they tracked the problem to the bank angle sensor. The HD service guy told me it took so long because they have not come across this problem with a Buell before.

Hell it's all good since it will be taken care of by my extended warranty. Still the weather has not been to bad down here in Tampa and I have really missed riding my bike.

Trust me I plan on going for a ride saturday morning no matter what the weather.

Hello.
I've got a problem with my '01 x1. After 10 - 20 km the engine looses the power and starts to misfires and seems only running on one cyl. Then is goes running ok for a while and starts all over again after another 10-20 km.
Anyone?
The garage can't fine anything wrong whit the scanalyser.

Bank angle sensor, huh? Good news on the warranty!

For future (post-warranty) reference, I've fixed a couple of those by drilling a hole in the top of the sensor and filling it up with epoxy resin. Just make sure it's straight up and down when the glue sets!

Steed,

Even though the scanalyser doesn't indicate it, consider changing the head temperature sensor. We've had our fair share go bad without so much as a code. We found it the first time by taping the scanalyser to the fuel tank, going for a ride and monitoring the output of the sensor.

steed:

check the coil, check the ignition and coil wires.

just went through this on my sportster on a road trip. my ignition wires to the coil were pulling loose from inside the boot. coil showed good, power loss above 75mph, and would occasionally die for no reason, and have no spark.
