I got the Ipod touch instead since I already have a cell phone and a digital camera that I am happy with.

It has wi-fi compatibility, mine has 16GB storage and I use it to record lectures, play mp3s, and keep my
calendar + all of the other functions I used to use a PDA for.

For my purposes the touch was a better choice than the iphone. I also have a silicone protector for
it made by ezgear and have dropped it too many times without it suffering the slightest damage. FWIW

Sean, There is a small area where 3G works in and around Newburgh, Rockland county works great though. The edge network in Newburgh is actually quite fast. Mark is right as far as the plan. the entire 3G plan is 10 bucks more. The GPS alone is worth it in my opinion. I just upgraded to the 3G (posted pic) and am glad I did.

The iPhone works great for me, but I'm partial to Apple's stuff anyway. 16 Gig. First release. Have had it a year and a half. For my business it is very capable. I use it for Contacts, E-Mail, Web, Calendar. I really don't need to create any documents, just read 'em. For the personal side of it, I have videos of bike trips and family events and a large collection of photos on it to show to friends. Some music. Some TV Shows and Movies I've never watched. Has a pretty good camera. No video capabilities yet. A ton of apps are available, with some great freebies. I'm pretty rough on it and have dropped it numerous times. It's dented up. I'm impressed with how well the screen has held up. Oh, and I use the Telephone function as well.

With my Scala Headset, I bluetooth through a Gamin 550 & iPhone and are able to use the phone and can hear the Garmin Lady. If the iPhone was Voice Activated I might not have to pull off the road to make a call. But if you have to stop to call, you don't have to remove your helmet.

Jailbreak it and it's a nice unit. SSH, VNC, and you can run your networks (3G) from anywhere and your remote co-workers will never know where you are.

I bought my son the latest and greatest for Christmas. It was all he wanted. He loves it so far. He doesn't use it for business purposes though.

My wife does use here phone for work and is absolutely addicted to her crackberry.

I inherited my son's old Moto Q. It is ok. Not great. It's neat having a phone to surf the internet with, but the screen is too small to see much on and things sometimes line up funny.

I guess it just depends on what you want your phone to do.

You need a Juice Box
http://www.macally.com/EN/Product/ArticleShow.asp? ArticleID=33
Amazon sells them for $29. It provides power to any usb device. I have found it will give me 1 full iPhone 3g charge (0%-100% charge), or several half charges (~50%-100%). The iPhone really sucks the mA when its battery is low.

Friends, including Zac, have shown me how useful and just plain neato they are. Cut and paste cannot be far off can it?

What is this new version that is soon to be released? Please elaborate.

I asked for one for Christmas and got the AT&T gift cards for one. Haven't made it to the AT&T store in Longview yet though.

Also, can you swap between old phone and iphone. AT&T guy said I could but they'd have to set it up special for me, new sim for old phone I guess or something like that.

Zat sound right?

There have been some pretty credible rumors Verizon and Apple are in talks...

Well Ted, macworld 2009 has come and gone, no announcement.

Besides, when the iphone was first developed, they took it to Verizon first. Verizon didn't want it, so Apple took it AT&T. They then signed a 5 year exclusive deal.

With Blackberry signing on with Verizon for the Storm, I don't see an iphone verizon deal for a few more years at least.

Blake, Apple historically updates items twice a year, June, and back to school time.
They introduce new products at Macworld (well they did) in January.

My prediction is a 32gb version sometime this spring.

As for Copy and paste. My prediction is it will be a long time off (maybe SW V3.0). The way the iPhones unix implementation is done the sandbox walls are solid.
They did this for OS stability and security, but it had the effect of cutting off applications from each other.
To accomplish this they are going to have to create a DMZ zone were apps can mingle. They do not seem very motivated to do this.

As for the rumor of Verizon getting an iPhone. Not going to happen.

After Verizon dismissed them early on, Apple decided (rightfully) that they should focus on one model worldwide. That is why they went with GSM. In fact they went so far as to implement most of the world's GSM standards
GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS/WCDMA/HSDPA 850/1900/2100
This allows the iphone to be one of the few world phone available in the US the can be used in S.Korea/Japan.

Now the 2 rumors I do believe is Apple has been working for sometime with China Mobile on a dedicated model. China Mobile is launch a home grown 3g technology (D-SCDMA). They did this to avoid paying any royalty fees to Qualcomm.
Because China mobile has north of 300million current customers it makes business sense to create a custom version.

As for Verizon getting the iPhone it will only happen after Verizon launches their LTE network.
LTE has been chosen by most of the world network operators as the 4g upgrade path. The problem with this is existing GSM networks have a relatively easy upgrade path, CDMA networks (verizon/sprint) need to launch a totally new network.

If any of you were around when Att/Cingular switched from TDMA to GSM you know what a mess that was.
Verizon will be going through this late this year.

I've had mine since I ran over my Crackberry with my truck. Cool little phone! The Apps are what sold me on it. That and I couldn't get images in my BB email (without buying a 3rd party program).

It stinks that I can't MMS, but that is one of the few drawbacks that I use my phone for.

Apps I have (all free)
Weather Channel (I like the instant forecast and the video forecast, as well as the radar in motion feature)
Facebook,
AOL Radio
Clinometer (digital angle finder)
Pandora <--use this while riding
iBowl
WhitePages
iHeartRadio
backgrounds
TapDefense
flashlight
dots free
iFound
ManGo
Whoopie (whoopie cushion)
reMovem free
Sportacular
eBay (mobile)

My wife got my a $30 iTunes card, I just haven't decided what Apps to buy with it. What are the Apps you have installed.

How about "hands-free" with B/T? With auto answer after 1-2 rings?

I'm getting REAL close to selling my Tilt and Q 9h for an iPhone 3g (16mb refurb).

The only other goodie I would like is stereo B/T. I hear you have to add a dongle to get that ;+{.

Thx

Auto answer: No
Voice dial: No

I have never liked auto answers. It is just simpler to tap the button on my helmet.

There are some voice dial apps, none seem to be of the quality like my Q has. The auto answer is nice since sometimes my hands are busy and sometimes I can't hear it ring in my helmet.

Next question, does the iPhone use the standard 3G SIM?

Will it sync with my Outlook mail and contacts?

TIA, you all are GREAT! Now I just have to justify it to my right hip pocket. ;+}

The voice dial apps are useless because you have to launch the application first. So by the time you have done that you could have just made the call normally.

Yes

Yes, and an exchange server if you have access

Jamie:

You-da-man!!! Thanks for the info.

So besides the $'s, and voice dial, why should I pitch my Q 9h?

I have an 8925 Tilt, it's a real nice phone (except I cracked the screen Bad Neil). It seems like it's just a wanna-be and the apps and display are an after thought versus the iPhone having the GUI touch interface being the "prime directive".

Is this a fair eval of the differences?

Thanks
Neil S.

They are very different worlds.

I still have my windows mobile device "the secret project" just for use on the bike.
It does things my iPhone can't do. Like voice dial, real buttons (iphone will not work with gloves), and turn by turn nav.

The iPhone is a real world game changer for daily life.

The web browsing alone is enough. Pair that with good exchange support, great iTunes integration (music/video) and now a billion apps to play with and the iPhone is with out peer.

As for your 9qh I have thought about picking one up to update my bike system. Since they both use sim cards there is no reason you can't use both.

Wow now we are playing in the archives

I have 3, 3gs'.

Pros: Processor is noticeably faster (ram increase to 256mb helps)
Compass is surprisingly functional.
Autofocus camera rocks (instant youtube video uploads right from the camera app)
32gb storage is something I much needed (I actually need over a 100gb)
New screen coating is not a joke, it really does repeal grease.
Same case as a 3g so all your cases/acc fit

Cons: Looks just like a 3g
Increased network protocal (7.2 hsdpa) is not publicly live on att
Battery life is about the same as my old 3g (I run exchange + push notification so maybe that is heavier drain than before)

Anything specific you want to know?
