Im hearing stories of guys wearing mesh jackets that have the jackets melt to them when they go down? is this true? Been thinking about getting the Icon Timax mesh jacket and not sure if its worth it. its hot as hell and humid in the summer here and the leather gericke jacket is death. |

Mine didn't melt. It didn't save my ribs, but saved my skin. |

I went down at about 45mph in a FG kilimanjaro air. The fabric didn't melt but I did have some seams fail. The fabric also seemed to grab the pavement instead of sliding, causing me to tumble. |

I went down in a Teknic Supervent jacket. Saved my hide. Was doing around 45mph+ going around a right hand switchback two-up and I low sided on gravel in the corner. I have been through that corner many times and gravel bit me once. The right front cuff was rubbed a bit, the armor and extra layers took the fall and slide just fine. I was fine, except for a few raspberries. Which I'll take any day. I was also wearing a set of Olympia AirGlide pants...they crashed really well. No damage to me at all. But the pants were trashed. The wife... she slid in Joe Rocket Cleo (mesh pants) and Firstgear mesh jacket. She didn't have a scratch on her...anywhere! She probable surfed on top of me... But we both walked away, unharmed... So did the bike...mostly. |

I've heard stories about mesh with good armor as doing almost as good as leather - but you still have to think of them as a "one fall jacket." And yeah, I ride a mesh jacket in summer too. |

I had an AGV that did melt a bit. It was a 40 ish low side. The jacket didn't burn me, it melted on the back of the elbow armor. It was a long slide. Best part was the jacket was totaled, but I was only lightly scratched |

So, which Brand/Model mesh jacket did you go down in? My REV'IT Airforce has leather & lorica(?) on the shoulders & sleeves supposedly in the critical impact areas. I'm curious if it was just mesh where you got your booboo. |

Yes, a Joe Rocket... If I had been wearing a back protector I would have probably walked away.. Make sure the jacket can zip to your pants!!!! I took some bad hits to my lower back when my jacket rode up in my wreck Check out AGV Sport They have a real nice perforated leather/textile jacket.. |

That happened last year at Homecoming on a Buell Demo Ride. Long story short. I wont buy another mesh jacket like the one in the photo. The zipper broke and the jacket rolled off my shoulder. Jeans provide almost no protection. |

I had a rasberry like that from my M2 Wolf... amazing how much and how long such a little thing can hurt, isn't it? And I bet I spent $150 on various bandaids and dressings before I was done. I had to fly on business a couple times while it was healing, and every time I would get up or down from a seat in the plane, my eyes would be watering from the pain. |

My buddy went down wearing the Joe Rocket Alter Ego pants and jacket. He didn't have a scratch on him. The jacket and pants "pilled". They are a single crash item. I wear the NJKLeathers Breeze Mesh Jacket.
I love it. It is very comfortable and has great armor. |

Mine was about 30-35mph. It was a Joe Rocket Phoenix 3 jacket and it did just fine (ground down a snap but it still works). I continue to wear it without worry. |

I don't think the melting business has anything to do with mesh vs. conventional jackets, it's the material used. IIRC there was something in Motorcycle Consumer News about this a couple of years ago. The material used in some cheap jackets has a low melting point and will melt and adhere to your skin in a slide. The good stuff will not. |

I wasn't wearing mesh, and I went down with Wolf in that wreck. I was and still am wearing the Buell Adventure jacket that was brand new on the market at the time. It took off a little rubber shoulder pad and got a few scuffs but otherwise no damage. I was also wearing the Buell pants. Lost the waist button, but no other damage. In spite of breaking some ribs and spraining both ankles I didn't have a single scratch, raspberry, or bruise from impact. The Adventure jacket has removable panels on the front, vents on the arms, and vents on the back. When all are opened up air enters the front panels and surrounds your body then flows out the back. It is the best I have had(and fully tested). |

I crashed in a mesh jacket, and while it didn't melt to my skin, it ripped as easily as my jeans did. It saved my bones from impact, but as soon as I was sliding, it ripped. It was Joe Rocket Phoenix (generation 1 I think). I would go with a perforated leather jacket, or maybe a mesh/leather hybrid. Check out the PowerTrip Blackhawk jacket, which I have and will gladly endorse. |

http://www.defenselink.mil/news/newsarticle.aspx?i d=15478 Synthetic Clothes Off Limits to Marines Outside Bases in Iraq By Lance Cpl. Stephen Holt, USMC Special to American Forces Press Service CAMP TAQADDUM, Iraq, April 12, 2006 – Marines conducting operations outside forward operating bases and camps in Iraq can no longer wear synthetic athletic clothing containing polyester and nylon, Marine Corps commanders have ordered. The ban on popular clothing from companies like Under Armour, CoolMax and Nike comes in the wake of concerns that a substantial burn risk is associated with wearing clothing made with these synthetic materials, officials said. When exposed to extreme heat and flames, clothing containing some synthetic materials like polyester will melt and can fuse to the skin. This essentially creates a second skin and can lead to horrific, disfiguring burns, said Navy Capt. Lynn E. Welling, the 1st Marine Logistics Group head surgeon. |

"When exposed to extreme heat and flames, clothing containing some synthetic materials like polyester will melt and can fuse to the skin." If you're building so much friction sliding down the road that you burst into flames, well, I guess you've had a bad day, haven't you? ~SM |

Stop being such a punannay Dan! Yes, what I've heard and seen from the squiddies coming into my store the mesh works for the most part, but its a one time use thing. Also, like was said earlier the mesh doesn't "slide" along the ground as well as leather does. For myself I've got a mesh NEXGEN brand jacket, it's not the best I know, but I only paid $70is bucks for it. I'll be ordering myself a new one this summer. For the smaller amount of money and the comfort I'll do mesh opposed to leather for street/everday riding. Were I going to hit a track, leather all the way. |

Sorry to repeat myself, but the Motoport site has some stories about melting, as well as some Kevlar mesh gear guaranteed not to melt. I have one of their mesh jackets and though it looks (and is) bulky it flows air better than a t-shirt. I have to wear the liner in the morning on the way to work or freeze to death. Then for the ride home, when its 100° as long as I'm movin' it's groovin'. Great stuff, highly recommended. Web Bike World has a comparison of Roadcrafter and the Motoport, worth a read: http://www.webbikeworld.com/r3/motoport/ I also have the Roadcrafter for cooler days. |

I can certainly live with mesh having a single crash lifespan, if it actually protects me. Living in Florida it is HOT much of the year. I'm a big boy anyway, and absolutely cook in leather most of the year. The thing I am seeing in this thread is that some have been well protected while others have not. I'm not sure I can tell which jacket will hold up well enough to protect me and which won't just based on looking at it. Name brands may not even be a good indicator. I wish I had some more scientific way to know which jackets would hold up. I also just wear jeans when I ride. I know that is not a good idea, but with most of my riding being commuting of some sort and not just riding for the sake of riding, I have a hard time thinking I will be disciplined enough to put them on for my normal short rides around town. I do think I want to try to find some I can live with for when I go on longer rides though. Any recommendations? |

Went down last week after running over a deer. Was doing around 60 or 65. Had a tour master mesh jacket and fieldsheer textile pants. Both worked extremely well since I only had a burn on the palm of my hand where asphalt eat the HD gloves I was wearing. |

Wolf, don't think of it as ruining your blue jeans, think of it as free mesh pants. |
