How much Syn 3 should I buy to do the oil, tranny and primary on my 9R? And how much of the total goes into each? |

Syn 3 is good for the Engine. Mobil One is available for half the price. Most brothers who use Mobil 1, use 15w50. There is some anecdotal evidence that the additives in some synthetic motor oils and/or gear oils may damage the stator or reduce friction on the clutch, so many brothers have switched to Harley Formula + for those reasons. I use it, and the bike shifts just as well as it did with synthetic gear oil. Good news on the tranny oil: there isn't any:-). Unlike a Harley, the tranny does not have it's own oil reservoir. The engine requires 2.5 quarts and that includes four ounces that should be poured into the new oil filter before installing it. The shop manual calls for filling the primary chain case "until the fluid level is even with the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring". This is normally a few ounces less than a quart. Overfilling the transmission can adversely affect shifting, but a lot of guys just throw the whole quart in there with no apparent adverse effects. I do not.
A couple of other things to note: 1. A number of brothers have reported stripping the threads on the oil fill plugs by using the torque values in the shop manual. Using new o rings and a little common sense when tightening them should eliminate this problem. 2. When picking up my Mobil 1 at the local Wally World, I also buy the Super Tech oil filters, # ST4967. They cost two bucks, and seem to be made by the same company that makes the HD ones that cost eight bucks. Some see this as a false economy, I do not. |

Glad this was posted. I am probably going to change out the fluids on my CityX before MBV, and have not done it myself yet (prepaid maint., but I refuse to deal with my local shop any longer). Thanks for posting the question Ferris, and thanks for the useful info, everyone else! |

maybe I'm used to doing cars but shouldnt I put SOME oil directly into the engine to not have a dry start? |

Pretty hard to dry out an engine once it has had oil in it. I think the problem you are worried about might be addressed by putting some oil in the filter. The shop manual calls for four ounces. Not sure where else one could put it. |

I would imagine that when draining the fluids, enough will stay in the internals to protect them for the few rotations it will take to get the new oil flowing. Plus, what Gentelman_Jon said, adding the 4oz to the filter puts some oil directly into the needed areas at first startup. Gonna head to Wally world in a bit to get the oil/filter so I can have fresh lubys in bike for MBV. |

Wally's don't always have the SuperTech Filters, so here is a list of other compatibles that you can find at any auto store. Wal-Mart Super Tech = ST4967 Fram = PH4967 AC = PF1233 Motorcraft = FL836 STP = S4967 k&n/ kn 177 wix/ 51394 bosch/ 3311 purolator/L14476 hd/63806-004 acdelco/pf1233 napa/1394 |

Gent_Jon, your a life saver as soon as I called Autozone, Advanced and napa once I said "Buell" it was "Sorry we dont carry any motorcycle products." So I'd say well can you cross refference parts and they'd give me a run around about what ever crap cause they're just flat out lazy. Sir you are an amazing frustration save, its twice now you've done this for me. Thank you! |

SVO1023, Mike... You said something to me about fluids because I mentioned to you that when my bike got warm in traffic it wouldn't go into neutral. Wrong type or something... whats your thought? |

Gentleman Jon - the anecdotal evidence WRT Mobil 1 eating stators and such is for the Mobil 1 Gear Oil (75W90?). Mobil 1 15W50 Motor Oil should be fine in the tranny and engine, and should not have friction modifiers that could cause clitch slippage. |

I use Syn 3 in my primary and engine. Have been doing so for ~17K miles now. |

I think it is the sulfur compounds in the oil that will attack the copper wiring, I believe (hope) that HD Formula Plus addresses this concern. |

Sulfur compounds are only in the gear oil. EZ |

Most "tubers" don't like the 32 ounces of tranny oil that the manual sez to use.28 ounces seems to the magic number. That works for most of them just fine. I have never heard of an XB having a problem with a full quart. I've been running Castrol synthetic 75w90 with no issues at all in all three of my Buells............ |

Charlie, I do run the formula plus in mine......the shifting part....make sure the primary chain is spot on.....the mobile one gear oil did make my trans shift like butter....it did eat my stator though....i could be wrong but i believe its the gear oii...formula plus aint bad.. Mike |

I keep hearing people sing the song about cheap oil... You GET what you PAY for. Two things I would never pinch pennies on: Oil and tires. Protect your investment, use the recommended fluids. The evidence regarding stator failure is much more than anecdotal. Mobil 1 in the primary does lead to premature failure of the stator. Those who say it doesn't merely haven't had theirs fail yet. I've seen it way too many times not to speak up. It's only one quart, buy the Formula Plus and rest easy. Use the Mobil One in your engine if you must, haven't heard about problems with that. Replacing the stator is a real pain in the ass. Having a shop do it is very expensive.

30 K miles no dead stator, The gear case has had either formula + or sport trans. I am beginning to think that 32 OZS may be too much oil for the tube frames, I have a lurch on take off and squeal issue from the primary I second the notion that for the chain case the chain case oils are best. the synthetic HD oil is approved not my first choice though as the two oils are designed for different services. |
