My X1 used to fire up instantly at the first push of the starter button. Past couple of times I tried to start the bike it took a few seconds before it fired up. Just wondering where to look. Battery is a couple of months old and it is hooked up to a Tender when not in use. Cables are tight, ignition switch is new and the bike runs perfectly and all vital are signs are on the dot.
Thanks.

Make sure your idle isn't set too high, And don't give it any gas when starting. If you've got the idle adjust cable installed, back it off a bit when starting.

Hmmm, didn't think of checking the plugs. Will do asap.
As for idle, it's right at 1000-1050 RPM and I didn't fiddle with it so I think I can rule that out.
Good input thanks.

One "gotcha" is that the weather is cooler now. Your cold start is now colder.

I don't know what others have done to their X1s but mine has always required me to barely crack the throttle at cold startup. I hold the RPS at 1500 until it sounds right. (usually 10-15 seconds)

There is no fast idle circuit on the older injected bikes. All the brain does when it detects a cold engine is to put lots more fuel in the mixture.

One more thing that will cause people to fight me:
I set my idle speed to 950 with the engine is warmed up.
Why?
With the factory recommended idle speed, it would overheat in city traffic and also, all of the plastic body parts rattled the most between 1000 and 1100.

Some here have said that lowering the idle will kill an engine due to low pressure.
That is B.S. (unless you set it at 300 LOL!)

I've got to crack my throttle too, just a little, then hold for 1/2 minute.

Race ECM is the reason. You might have stock ECM, but your profile says "race maps" so I'll bet that is the reason.

My 2000 X1 idles fine at startup, no throttle, has a enrichment circuit that keeps it going without my help.

Regarding the cold start idle, I started having the same issues, i.e., keeping the throttle open for about 30-45 second, etc., after loading the Race maps. Experimenting with the cold start enrichment table values didn't seem to help. Finally I went back to the fuel maps and changed the values in the idle area - TP between 10-20 and RPM between 0-1200, in the lower left corner of the map table, back to the stock values. The bike now starts up and idles with hardly any help. Every now and then, I just need to hold it open for may be 5 seconds but the change made a big difference.
As for the lazy starting issue, it did it again this morning so at least it is consistent. I'll dig into it tomorrow morning and report back.

Mine has had a loud pipe and a race ECU since I bought it from the dealership.
(It was a demo bike)

I guess what I think of as "normal" isn't actually normal after all is it?

Problem fixed.
Took the solenoid cover off, took the plunger out, cleaned and aligned the copper contacts. One push of the starter was all it took to get it fired up.
Just make sure you disconnect a battery terminal if you decide to do this.
BTW, the plugs looked fine.
