All,

I do a lot of stop and go commuting to work, and its blasted hot here in CO right now. I get baked, and I think the rear cylinder is too in heavy slow traffic. So I was thinking about getting the fan Buell sells and an oil cooler from American Sport Bike to help with this.

Any down sides to this? Thoughts?

I've had the fan on my 99 S3 with a 1250 kit and 10.5 pistons for a few years. It almost never activates when I'm riding, even in slow hot driving. It does run after I've turned the bike off and it sits for a few minutes, which indicates to me that temperature is not a problem when moving but when you stop.

Since XL bikes don't have oil injection onto pistons I don't think that bulk oil temperatures get so hot that it requires an oil cooler. When you get home periodically check bulk oil temperature with a quick acting thermometer. If it's consistently above 210 then you may want to consider an oil cooler.

Running synthetic oils would be "cheap insurance" compared to using an oil cooler.

I am stationed in South Texas(Corpus Christi), and its been over 90* for the last several months. Have been stationed here since early 06.

I only thing I have noticed is detonation when hot, in heavy traffic(1250cc, 10.5:1), went another range cooler on the plugs, and all has been well since...

No burnt oil, and average temps 195*.....

FWIW, I can get the oil hotter in Febraury in Virginia Beack, doing HARD riding, and high speed runs, than running in traffic...

Chase

EDIT, and I ALWAYS run Mobil 1, 20-50.... cheap insurance indeed...

Here are my options to oil coolers.
Jagg oil cooler on 99 S3

XB cooler on 96 S1

I'm not saying to not get an oil-cooler, but what ever oil-cooler you do get, make sure to get a thermo-valve for the reasons outlined by Sloppy. Oil temps too low aren't good either.

The fan kit Buell sells wasn't designed to cool the cylinders, it was designed to cool the back of the FI system for bikes in hot countries and questionable fuel quality. Probably wouldn't hurt anything to use one, but it might blow even more heat on your right leg.

Dj if you ride it long enough in 30 deg with the jagg design cooler it gets up to the 190 210 f area.

Idealy you get enough heat to drive off the water, I have not seen a integrated temp control valve in a XL cooler, most cover the radiator if worried.

I have a fan on my X1 also. It was designed to cool the intake, but it sure blows a lot of engine heat away in the process. I also have an oil cooler with a bypass thermostat. When it's 100 degrees outside and you're stuck in traffic, every little bit helps.

Eat me you babies! It's bee over 110 for the last two weeks in Las vegas! Then again we don't ride that much when it's that hot, especially air cooled engines.

My X1 detonates a little in hot traffic in Las Vegas but otherwise its fine. I run Amsoil in the engine and trans. If the light just changes I will sometimes shut the bike down and let it cool for a few. No problems so far. A little octane boost will help also if its just detonating on you from the heat.

Shutting the bike down for that short period of time will actually increase the temperature, by cutting off oil flow. Better to leave it running. I've read many times where those with fans on their bikes say they'll be running constantly after the engine is shut off at a gas station, for example, but turn off once the oil is flowing and they're back in the breeze again.

Yeah, we have A/C, just not out on the flightline! I am nearing the end of my deployment, about 6 weeks to go. I'll be riding the wheels off my s1 when I get back! Thanks for the support!

I am another Denver Tuber. I have the fan on my S3. It runs a lot in our thin air and high temps -- although at first I thought it only ran when the bike was turned off -- you can't hear it when the bike is running -- although if you put your hand over it you can feel it. In the hot weather I make sure I'm running the highest octane I can afford Adding the race ECU, force winder and pipe made a huge difference in the hot -- although it looks like you have those bases covered. My Buell likes the cool Colorado nights as most hooligans do -- Send me an Email sometime and maybe we can get together and ride --

Ok Miles you got it over us for HOT, and we feel for ya. Stay safe make the best of it and come back in one piece...and Thank-you all.

Jesse doe's your bike leak oil more when you use Amsoil than organic oils? I was advised not to use synthetics in the H-D motors because they will drip more, is this fantasy(I bought a case of the stuff and I'd like to use it)?

Knowing how the engine works I would call that fantasy for sure. Syn oil does not leak more period For a while many years ago when syn was becoming popular I would get some reports from some guys running a lube shop. They all switched to syn oil. Cooler running made them happy too, is any manufacture claiming dyno oil can do protect for 15k miles? No but Mobil 1 extended full syn does. You can test that at blackstonelabs.com too.

Have been running a Oil Cooler, Thermostat(off a BIG TWIN), and a Fan since early on ...

Have almost a 104K miles on it now and the top end has not been off yet ???

What kind of power are you getting out of that race kit and the high density altitude we get here? It just seems I'm not getting the power I'm supposed to according to some of the post I've been reading here. Some guys are claiming the ability to wheelie in 3rd gear on power alone. I remain dubious of that claim. But a 2nd gear wheelie should be possible, even in Denver. Are you a BRAC member here? Know DAve from RMH?

After I installed my ECM and dialed it in with VDSTS, I snached 17 teeth off my drive belt doing a clutch dump power-shift at 80+mph...new belt.
