OK Guys! I did it, I bought a D&D pipe from a fellow bad weather member for my XB12Ss. What should I do about an ECM. Should i just get the Buell race ECM. Are there other options out there besides the Buell race ECM. I know that a K&N filter is a must. So what are your thoughts on this.

I'd stick with the stock ECM for now and wait for Al from American Sport Bike to get a map worked out for that pipe.

Will it hurt the motor if I run the pipe without the proper ecm and filter.

bigbuell -

Let me know what you end up with...I just did the same thing (p.s. D&D sound Rocks)granted I want the performance but the price for the DL Key and the tuning just isn't to attractive. I know that I'll probably end up doing it but my biggest concern is not hurting my engine and saving money!!

I'm using a TFI on mine for now, but I just got off the phone with Al (American Sport Bike). The Direct Link for our D&D equipped bikes is in the works. We just need to be patient, I have no doubt that it will be the best way to go. Thanks Al!

i really dont recommend running it with the stock ecm. just my opinion. i have a d&d on mine and am waiting to get something done as far as the fuel. it will mopre than likely run very lean which is not good at all. i'd rather wait alittle and get it together right, than take the chance at messing something up running it that way.
just my .02

I have DL mapping available for the D+D on a 12 now

Do not run it with a stock ecm and race or K+N filter

Dave-
Do you have a map for the Drummer, open air box & K+N on a 9 yet?

What is the risk of running a Drummer and a K+N with standard ECM. Should I upgrade the ECM as well?

I'm doing the same thing on my '04 XB12S. Just bought a D & D slip on, have a K & N filter & open box. I have the race ECM, but am confused as to the differing opinions I'm getting on here whether I should install the race ECM, or not?
Al, or anyone with some real mechanical knoledge???

I have the D&D with the race ECM on my Long with the high flow air filter and the sound and performance are great. I just received the Micron pipe from Al for my Long and will be posting results of the Dyno runs (without tuning software) and the dyno runs the same with D&D with Race ECM probably Sunday or Monday. I am getting the exhaust put on and Dynoed by one of my sponsors at American Thunderbike Club on Saturday.

Daves,

First of all how much do you charge to get my Stock ECM tuned with the D&D map?

Second when you say don't run D&D with Stock ECM and Race filter...Is it ok to run it with the stock filter? I'm not as worried about performance as I am keeping my bike in running condition.

Thanks,
Erik

Your bike will run great

Daves, Isn't it necessary, or at least highly reccomended that the re-flash of the ECM be done with the specific bike it's for, on a Dyno?
I know in my experiences with my Aprilia Factory and the Power Commander III, that was the case.
You could DL maps from Dynojet, but they weren't even close, compared to the Dyno tune!

OK, this is what I get from this so far. Don't run the D&D with the stock ECM or stock filter. It sounds like you can run the D&D with the Buell race kit and the K&N filter. But even better is to run it with the DL mapping. But what I'm confused on is what Dave said. "Do not run it with a stock ecm and race or K+N filter." OK, what does that mean. I need to know what to use before I install this on my bike. Also do you have to reset the TPS with the DL set up.

So far it looks like the DL tuning is real close, bike to bike, unlike the PC III.
We have downloaded maps into various bikes and they all like the mapping.

Bigbuell,
Yes, you might get away with just the D+D. I know of several that have done this and not had any problems. I used to say it was OK.
BUT, I have, in the past few months become aware of a couple situations that leads me to no longer advise running any higher flow exhaust without the race ecm or DL tuning.
Broken rings/top piston edges being the result on a couple bikes running a muffler and stock ecm.

The race ecm is made to work as a part of the race kit system. It works ok with other mufflers but now that we have the ability to re-map the ecm for your specific combo that is the way to go in my opinion.

At this point we are charging 242.95 for the Directlink key and 150.00 for the mapping of the ecm. This includes the labor/time to install your ecm on a bike and take it back off.
I am working on trying to reduce the cost of the mapping.
Of course you'll save 10% off list on the exhaust and air filter also.

In anyone else's opinion is it really worth the extra $200+ dollars for the DL tuned ECM vs the Race ECM? After talking my wife into letting me spend Thousands of dollars on a bike and hundreds on a new pipe I'm finding it hard to tell her I am going to spend over $400 for a computer chip. Please help this is killing me. Don't get me wrong the DL's benefits are very attractive (much like Carbon Fiber) but I'm just not liking the price (much like Carbon Fiber).

Thanks,
Erik

Daves, Do you have a shop, or are you a commercial entity? If so, could you post an address & phone number, or at least a web link? I saw someone else mention something about giving you a call.
I’ve got a new (Leftover) ’04 XB12S that I just purchased. I installed a K & N, open air-box and have a race ECM and D & D slip on, that I have yet to install.
I’m 55 years old and have been involved in riding, racing & wrenching bikes for almost 40 years, but this new FI computer stuff really leaves me at a loss!
I’d really like to find a knowledgeable person, or shop where I could have some work done with some degree of confidence.
Thanks, CC

I dont have a drummer, but I do have the Jardin can and K/N Filter. The bike ran fine for about 6K miles. Now its putting and dying because its running to lean. I'm gonna get the directlink from asb soon, but I'd stick with Dave and recommend waiting till you do the directlink
