so another $165, I can't beleive they actually had one in stock this time..
so are they directional? thats one thing I didn't see in the instructions that came with it..

letters facing in or out??

letters readable from the sidewalk, not the seat. Top of the letters pointing toward the bike, bottom of the letters outward.

I don't know if the direction actually makes a difference, but my stock Sportster belt is set up like that.

I just saw a friend of mine's belt that almost broke.
No belt guard.

i got 6500+ on my original belt
its starting to show alittle fray one the sides
when SHOULD they be replaced?

i think when i replace my tire again im gonna dremel off the front half of the upper gaurd
that way u can SEE the belt but its still coverd at the sprocket so no rocks get sucked up under

service manager at KPHD thought i could use a skateboard wheel for a chain tensioner. how long do you suppose this would last? i have a source for a front chain sprocket (stock on 92 883 sportster). i just ordered a 50 tooth rear chain sprocket from vortex in florida.

What's the deal with the belts?? I'm knocking on wood... big time! I've got over 51,000 miles on the original belt! I've had it off a number of times when I do my service... and I always make sure everything is in alignment. Man.... hope I haven't jinxed myself by posting!!!

That'll do it. Might have to keep that in mind to check the sprokets every week for that. (Being I ride an FZR I have a chain and by God do I wish I had a belt. I hate oiling that thing.)

Thanks, Paul. Well... as I understand it, the XBs are super reliable. I'm sure Buell will exorcize any remaining gremlins in short order. But in the meantime... what a PITA.

I've got almost 9000mi on the original belt (03 XB9S)... Knock-on-wood... I'm with Prof_Stack on this one... put the guards back on... I've also had the belt off three times for new rear tires... No signs of impending doom either...

I'll just upgrade to the '04 belt system. at least those guards are somewhat tolerable...

I've got over 17K on my original belt. Recommended replacement is at the 15K service along with the belt tensioner. Belt guards are still on.

Thanks for the pics, now I know what to look for on a possible belt failure.

I had a pebble do exactly the same thing many thousands of miles ago. Didn't replace the belt (maybe because the service guy fed me a line, but no matter what, the belt didn't get replaced).

I think that was somewhere around 2500 miles and now I've got better than 11000 on it. 'course I don't do burnouts or wheelies either, so I may just be babying it.

I've never had a problem.

yeah, I didn't feel like taking a chance. its hard to see in the pic but that crack is pretty good running the entire belt, I guess if it was cracked/torn the other way it would be alot weaker. thats what happened to my first belt.

If you get rocks jammed between the pulley teeth and the belt you need to inspect the pulley very closely to see if the top layer of metal on the teeth has been chipped off. If this has happened it should be obvious. Once that top layer is removed the metal underneath is very coarse and will wear out your new belt in a short period of time. The only known remedy is to replace the sprocket
