I'm sure most of you are familiar with my situation, new buell, hit by an idiot a week into ownership. Anyway my question is, has anyone else had outrageous prices with progressive? My insurance for full coverage started at $1800 a year. I figured that was quite high, but I'm 21 and knew I'd be paying(xb9s). Well now after the wreck it appears that they did'nt know it was a "high performance bike" and decided my insurance should be 3000$ a year. Which turned my initial down payment into too small of an amount, and now they say I'm way behind on my payments etc.... anyone else had problems like this? the other good news is they are talking about problems with the vin on my policy vs the one on my bike.... There's no way in hell I can afford that kind of insurance when I get my new one so I'm going to have to pay the full cost up front and have it in someone elses name I guess...

Sounds like it is time to talk to a lawyer... It seems that they are leading up to cutting your policy off to save them the repair bills... I'd try the BBB, or something similar. Regardless of the circumstances, why did it take an accident to make them realize all these mistakes?

That's what they wanted from me too. I went through a broker in Florida (I'm in AZ) called "Fernet" and I get the insurance through Dairyland. $789 Yr. 26 Yrs old. 12R.

BTW, If they tell you it's a "class A" bike they are incorrect. It used to be. It is now classified "B". I don't know exactly what that means, other than majorly reduced insurance premiums.

Progressive tried to screw me this past week too!

XB12S
Online quote (w/ medical coverage) - 1100
Call to make it happen (w/o medical coverage) - 1800

Bastards

Anyway, make sure you go through a Harley Insurance rep, they will find you the best deal.

I decided to go with Dairyland again $700 (w/o medical coverage).

I have Progressive. When I got my XB12S it was $1500 per year full coverage, no deductables and roadside. 2 months later they tried to raise the rate based on it being built by HD. I argued to the clerk that it would cost less to repair my Ninja then it would the Buell. I told them they needed to research the costs of repairs for the Buells since the parts are generally lower cost then HD parts. I got a call back 2 days later apologizing. Haven't had a problem with them til now with my speeding ticket. So at the end of the policy term I shall be looking.

Kinda goes against their stinking commercials I've been seeing lately. Their commercials boast that they know all about bikes. "Did your insurance company picture this when you told them you had a sissy bar?" (grown men sitting in a bar crying) "Well at Progressive we know all about bikes!" Something like that. I'll stick with my USAA. I think I pay about $840 or something like that for a year.

SouthernMarine - USAA is the greatest. My insurance on my truck and my wife's car is wicked cheap. When I get a bike I'm going to insure it through them too. They've hooked me up when I filed a claim for a bunch of stuff that got toasted during a power surge on post a few years ago too. Cheap and user-friendly.

I had progressive at a reasonable cost for almost 2 years on my XB, then they send the renewal and the rate is more than doubled. They told me they did an across the board rate hike. I told them goodbye. Shop around and you will find reasonable rates.

Another happy Dairyland customer. They even give a BRAG discount.

Also, you need to call your states insurance commissioner. what Progressive is doing is dishonest and dishonorable even if it is not illegal. I know that he insurance companies in wisconsin are a lot easier to deal with once you tell them that you're ready to file a complaint with the IC's office.

Thanks for all the good advice fellas, I have some ammunition now. Kinda goes against their stinking commercials I've been seeing lately. Their commercials boast that they know all about bikes. "Did your insurance company picture this when you told them you had a sissy bar?" Yeah, and the bent fork one. I think it boils down to they don't know . Obviously I should have shopped around, I was foolish enough to believe their adds.

I have mentioned this before ,but back in September 03, a Progressive agent gave me a price of around 650 for my XB9S, they mistakenly thought it was an XI , even though I stressed it was an XB9S.

A few days later I received the docs in the post with an increase to around 1100 ,because they cocked it up.

I kicked up a fuss and they held to the original quote.

Progressive don't appear to know what they are doing with motorcycles. I had my policy for six months and then received some promo-flak asking me if i would consider using them for my insurance in the future.

Unlikely -if you don't know who your current policy holders are.

Just re-read the original post from Orcustus - they screwed up my VIN as well , because they thought it was an X1 - even though all my paperwork to them went straight from the dealer.

Progressive ...more like REGRESSIVE !!

State Farm was the cheapest for me.The HD dealer was real close with HD insurance from a company called Foremost. The wife and I used Foremost for her Sportster. State Farm rep said that they charge by the CC's not the type of bike, for what its worth.

Very unlikely to be using this crew next time

You can be assured that as soon as your progressive policy comes for renewal, they will raise it to about that amount. I had been with progressive for 5 years with no tickets or accidents, when they tried to do that to me. They even had the nerve to ask me why I wanted to cancel my policy with them. Idiots..

I'm about to switch insurance carriers (long story) and fear what will happen to the rates at the 6-month and 12-month reassessment point, and also fear I won't be able to get back to what I currently have (grandfathered discounts) when the rates get too high.

Progressive sucks. They quoted me $620/yr full coverage for my 03 XB9S. It was $20 cheaper than my current insurance, so I figured Progressive was a better insurance for $20 less. I paid for it right over the phone. About 2 weeks later I get the policy. With the policy is a bill for $780 for a total of $1400!! They misclassed my Buell so they tell me. So I say give me my $620 back and cancel the policy. Needless to say I'm back to American Modern Home Insurance, my original insurance. I'm 29 with a spotless record.

Me thinks I see a trend here. This has been happening this year here with young single men and sportbikes. A young friend who's a Buell owner, a '93 XB9S was quoted by Harley a sum of $8800 a year to renew. He had been paying $800 a year. He can't afford it so the state has come for the plates and he's waiting H-D Financial to come looking for the bike.

Anyway, the insurance industry appears to be doing something akin to what it did in the early seventies to muscle cars. Jack the rates to discourage people from buying said cars because they might be used in ways that could cause insurance companies to pay more in claims.

Remember who you're dealing with here, the only difference between the insurance industry and organized crime is that insurance's muscle is the government!

I know how that goes.. I had one company through HD, I was paying $650 a year full coverage. Then, I get the renewal notice and it's up to $1100 (I'm 38 with no claims, no tickets etc.) That rate they said was because I was a skilled rider and had two bikes with them. They blamed the rate increase on being bought out by another company that wasn't going to insure motorcycles anymore. HD found me a new carrier at around a grand a year for each bike. Now both my rides are with another company. It seems that the 'protection' racket has caught up with Buells and are trying to make us pay for all the other claims they get in a year...

Just gotta keep shopping around to find the best prices on this legalized extortion.

Later,
(damn, I miss typed something and didn't even realize it.. ok, it's fixed now..)

My favorite quote that I've ever received was from a company that ONLY insures motorcycles (the name escapes me, but you'd expect a company that ONLY insures bikes to at least know what the hell the bikes ARE) -

For my Firebolt only - $14,000 a year. Firebolt and Blast? Well over $17,000. I started laughing and the woman asked why. I laughed harder and hung up.

Orcustus; Nothing like a little insult to injury. My first quote was $3,700 on my 12. Then I got with A.M.G. and am paying $780 per year. I'll give the number if you'd like. Check out what StealthXB mentioned... He's a 3%er as well.

Insurance and so much else in our world of "protection" has gone haywire.

you can go to a bar and drink yourself stupid, get in your car and drive home...maybe you wreck and kill someone or maybe you just a get a dui...
but in the same bar you are not allowed to smoke a cigarrette.

all you ever have to do is follow the money trail on any outrageous bunch of crap.

and this is why we are supposedly fighting for freedom that we all so much enjoy.

not sure we enjoy it as much as we have the privilidge to pay for it.

Insurance ran me out of the business....along with some other crap.

Insurance is a total scam. You pay and pay and pay until you get in an accident, then they fight to avoid paying the claim. After that they raise your rates to cover the cost of the accident, assuming they don't drop you entirely. By the time it's all over you've more than paid for the cost of the repairs. My wife and I have never even caused an accident let alone filed a claim. Add up all the premiums we've paid over the years and you're getting near the cost of a new car. I figure that either one of us could total our cars, have the insurance company write us a check, and they'd still show a profit from us.

I'm pretty sure they determine policy premiums the same way english teachers grade papers: they toss them down a flight of stairs and see which one flies farthest.
