So last night we're riding to the BRAG meeting.
Lovely evening, nice roads, shifting into the next gear...no shifter
Not to far from SMHD/Buell so I baby it on in.
Seems as though the bolt suffered fatigue and broke inside the case
As I was figuring out what might I do about getting home, Dave (nice 98 S1W) offers me a ride home in his truck, Mike offers whatever help I can use, and Pete says, we can drill it and easy-out the bolt. Mike goes in and finds out the bolt I need is in stock
Pete starts to work on the bike and gets to the point where he less than comfortable, and gets me to look at it. I try with no luck, we get the easy-out to bite but the lock-tight won't let go
So, I take the plug out of the threaded hole just above where the shifter bolts on, and the bolt fits there, a little high, but workable.
I promptly broke the adjuster
So, I told Pete, I wasn't going to F with it anymore and just take it home.
I thought I was in 3rd or 4th gear 'cause the bike had no problem getting to the meeting.
I get home after a not-so-bad ride home, I was no longer frustrated, so I start to work on the bike again (the Neon has a broken radiator) as it's my ride to work this week.
Cut the threaded tube in half.
Put one of the "swivle eye bolts" in one end, and what's left of the other in the other end, and use the upper hole for the shifter.
It works
Turns out that I rode from SMHD/Buell to my house in L'ville in 5th gear! Now that, my friend is low end torque!
I couldn't even imagine trying anything close to that on the Bandit.

Footnote: the shifter bolt was weakened by a low side last summer in the mountains I'm sure. So fix it all the way next time!

your welcome my friend... sorry I could not get you any further. If you continue to work on the broken bolt, don't forget Todd's suggestion of heat.
5th gear?! that's impressive indeed

Heh...when I put my Freespirit rearsets on the first time I totally brainfarted and left the shift tab in the stock position, which REVERSED the shift patter...Took off in 5th the first time and yeah the engien was a little boggy...which was the clue, but she burbbled up and took off after a second. Mmmmmmm...TORQUE!

Glitch...I busted my shifter the night before the NE tour...ended up doing something very similar to what you decribed with eye bolts from Home Depot.

Made it through most of the day of hard riding before I bent that, too. We tried a roadside fix, and it managed to get to the last turn before the hotel we needed to register at and bam, bent it in half. I called the dealer and they sent a truck ot pick me up and replaced the shift adjuster for free. One of my few and far between happy dealer moments. Course, Erik was wandering around the garage that day, so I don't suppose that had anything to do with it. ; )

This is how it stands now.
Mike's giving a class in Heli-Coil (sp?) tonight.
boo boo
1 original threaded hole with bolt still inside.
2 the tube I had to cut in half, although it's still too high, but manageable
Hope this helps, I know the quality is lacking...

Glitch, similar deal happened to my X1. Pivot bolt holding the shift lever on snapped off about 2" inside the primary case.

Thanks, just doin' what I can with what I got.
Any idea why it snapped?
Last summer I while in the mountains I went wide in a corner and low sided off the road. It broke the shifter linkage, and the shifter toe peg, when I replaced the parts I didn't replace the bolt (which broke Monday) my guess is that since I didn't replace that bolt maybe it was weak or not as tight as it should be. It had backed out once last summer so I took it out and put lock-tight on it. Weak link?
Heavy feet?
Probably don't help none too much.

I wonder if the stock bolt is grade 5 or 8????
