Hello all, new to the board here, just wanted to say hello and possibly ask a question or 2 about my 5 day old xb12r...the engine seems to knock...after the first day, the tranny is starting to shift loud (as i mean an audible noise when shifting coming from the gearbox) its backfiring AND the engine light is on...i got this bike with 72 miles on it (i think it was a rental and no one told me)...what should i tell the dealership 2 morrow...could i have been sold a lemon? and does anyone know the procedure in possibly shoving this bike up the dealers (_!_) and getting a new xb12r???? and before anyone asks if i beat the bike...no...i did wind it out one time to see what it had, but only got up to about 100 miles an hour...and maximum ive taken the throttle up is about 5 and a half...any help or info would be greatful...thanks: )

they will probably just set the TP (throttle position) sensor back to a zero reading with the throttle closed. have them check the afv (air fuel value) before and after the test ride. this will make sure that your air - fuel mixture is correct. you could ride the bike 10 miles with a steady throttle, under 3200 rpm's to reset the afv your self. also have them verify the timing. the miles may have been test rides , where the computer learned the afv while some one was lugging the bike. make sure your not doing this as well.

well let me explain what the bike was doing at the time of the engine light first coming on...i was on an urban street, stop signs every 100 yards...with a few other buddys...just cruisin along...i noticed my seat was really really hot...looked down at the dash, and the red engine light was on...i pulled into mcdonalds with the rest of my friends, went in ate a sandwitch came back out started up fine and the engine light was OFF...rode about 5 miles and it came back on again...i started to notice a new humming kinda sound in the airbox...any ideas?

your cam comes on at 3k to 3500 rpm's. if your poking around at 2k rpm then your lugging the bike.
this causes a rich condition and some times oil carry over(ie oil coming out of the crank breathers and into the air cleaner.
very common on 883 xl's , especially w/ no tach.
if your trying to go hard while lugging it your going to detonate a piston any way. the load and timing have to be right.
i dont mean ride it like you stole it.
at least not this week.it's still brand knew right?

Hmmm, the humming sound could have been the fuel pump? the lower the fuel level the louder it gets. Getting really hot (mine gets HOT only on the right side where the rear cyl. exhaust comes out). I would ask them to check the temperature sensor as well. When you shut it off did the fan come on?

some xb's fuel pump regulators are a little loud for a bit , but usually simmers down.
just like the clicking of the f brake.( the springs in the floating disc)
does it sound like when you first turn your bike on? the fuel pump primming?

I had a similar engine light problem with my 2003 XB9S and it turned out to be a bad temp sensor. Even though the fan seemed to be operating properly I noticed after the sensor was changed the fan ran longer and more often, this is probably your problem. Also had a chaffed through spark plug wire that was causing the bike to stumble at around 4 grand, especially in damp weather. Doubt your plug wire has chaffed through this early and the sensor going this quick is questionable, but who knows maybe their supplier has been selling Buell crappy sensors?

if you had a manual you could put a jumper wire between pins 1&2 in the diagnostic plug and look up the trouble code. then you would know where to look .
i'm glad they updated the plug wires when the 12's came out, so as they dont chafe anymore.
now angled wires.

well i took the bike to the dealership to get it checked out...heres wot they said... "the first productions of the xb12r for 2004 had the o2 sensor wire routed incorrectly, thus causing the wire to rub on the frame, grounding it out and frying the o2 sensor" they had to order the o2 sensor so i wont be riding till friday or monday at the latest...i guess id rather it be the o2 sensor than a lifter or valve; ) thanks for your input slowby, and the rest of yall have a good day: )

Since I don't think anyone answered this - the engine noise you're hearing is most likely the valvetrain, they're notoriously loud on Buells in general and the XBs have inherited this.

Ditto the trans - I have a race can on mine and can both feel and hear the gear changes - it changes smoothly, though, just audibly.

Switch to synthetics when you get the chance. most people have a noticeable improvement in tranny once this is done, and you can't go wrong with a good synth in the engine, either.
