Well, it was a nice pretty day out, so me and my G/F hop on the Buell and head up to Center Hill for some riding. We make it through a few times 2 up, and decide to let her off the bike to take some pictures of me. Made it through the turn a dozen times, then the unexpected happened. Exiting the corner, there was suddenly a buttload of large gravel thrown all over the road. Apparently a vehicle that had just gone through was unable to keep it on the road. I panicked, straightened the bike up too soon for the exit, and barely ran out of road. As soon as I hit the gravel shoulder at about 45mph, all I saw was sky ground sky gorund sky ground then sliding on my head through the gravel. I was rolling and the bike was sliding down a 15 foot embankment. Damage assesment so far: Helmet demolished, leathers, gloves and boots roughed up. My thumb might be broke, or just badly jammed, my left arm has some rash from the leathers being torn across my skin, ankle is a little sore, and a few ribs feel slightly bruised. Bike, doesn't look too good. The front fairing is scratched, left mirror and turn signal broke, front fairing stay broke, left grip assembly demolished, primary case damaged, shifter linkage snapped, rear swingarm scratched up, tail plastics scratched up, and for the kicker, it looks like the frame has some nicks and other damage to it. Thats all the damage I was able to see as we were loading it onto the wrecker. List of my gear was Scorpion Exo-700 helmet, Tecknic VR-2 gauntlet gloves, TCX performance boots, Knox back protector, and AVGSport forza 1pc leather suit. All did their job fairly well Here are some pictures of my gear. Dont have any of the bike, was in too much of a hurry to snap some photos. Im one lucky SOB to not have more injuries than this. http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/6881/dsc01816f.jp g http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/7339/dsc01817a.jp g http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/796/dsc01822s.jpg |

Your gear did it's job, and you're alive. Can't ask for a better outcome really. Heal up! |

Cows die so you don't have to. Can't tell you how many times we've read of riders falling BECAUSE there was a camera involved. All's well that ends well (kinda) You'll heal and look at it this way, your riding gear just got some "credibility" |

ATGATT, can't believe it when I see people riding half dressed. Your investment did its job. Glad you're okay. |

Glad you aren't banged up worse. I had the same thought when I saw your helmet as I did when I low sided my bike "that would have been my head/face." |

Glad your Alright. That "sky, ground, sky, ground" feeling sucks bad. Its a good thing you had on all that gear. Makes me think twice about riding in a short sleeve shirt, but I still do all the time. It's just so damn hot around here this time of year. |

That's why he wrote "hurts". I've still got gravel in my knees from when I was a kid - from a bicycle accident. It's never too hot to go without protection. Hydrate and go faster. |

Yea deffinately lots of pain this morning. 99% sure my thumb is broken too, so will be going to the doc after I get off work today to get that taken care of, as well as the slightly swollen ankle. ATGATT ftw! I can almost guarantee I wouldn't be typing this from home if I hadn't been geared up. Scorpion has a customer for life |

glad to hear you are okay I ride AGATT all of the time the helmet picture looks very interesting. If you want to have some fun with it and learn more about helmets send it in to the SNELL foundation and they will do an analysis on it and send it back to you. Be careful out there |

Man I love leathers!! Your helmet did a fantastic job! It only takes going down once to make you aware of what you need to have on. I see folks riding in some of the most ridiculous get ups! Flip flops, short, a tang top and beanie helmet are my favorites. Nothing like having no respect for your body. I know that sore feeling. Your adrenaline keeps you saying "I'll be fine" until a good nights rest! Glad you're alright and your girl wasn't on at the time. This is one of those cases where tow heads are not better than one! |

Glad to hear you're mostly in one piece. I know you've got to be stiff and sore but think what you'd be like without the gear. Wearing all the gear shows good judgment on your part. |

Glad to hear you're okay - super glad to hear your g/f wasn't on the bike! They say there's two types of riders: Those that have laid it down, and those that will. sucks about the bike though... could always be worse! |

Glad you were able to limp away. I wear mesh pants, with a zippered mesh jacket, gloves and helmet in deep south Texas in 100 degree weather and I think is cooler then riding in jeans. If you think its too hot to wear gear its probably too hot to ride at all. |

Announcement at MotoGP: "it's too hot, you can race in tanks, shorts and flip flops." Not likely to hear that. |

Man, I bet that WAS a pucker moment to KNOW the curve is clear, then suddenly find gravel where there was none before. That's probably the biggest reason I don't ride hard... I'm always paranoid about what I'll find around the bend. ~SM |

Things I've recently found "around the bend" on blind turns, in addition to gravel: A stopped trash truck A cement truck coming towards me straddling the center line Two bicyclists walking their bikes in the middle of the lane |

Some of the BEST roads ALWAYS have gravel, rocks, oil, cow-patties, u-turning vehicles, deer, BEARS. Some people still ride the twisties as if none of this stuff exists. Some are lucky... some not. I wanna die in bed, in my sleep. |

What? thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard? How does the Gf not having on full protection cause a wreck? Seems like He said "Exiting the corner, there was suddenly a buttload of large gravel thrown all over the road" Thats what Caused the wreck. Why don't you worry about yourself wearing all of your Gear all of the time. And quit acting like a 10 year old. We don't need you to tell us to wear our gear. Personally, Im not a fan of wearing gear when its 105 degrees outside. No matter how fast you go, your can't cool down when its that hot. So if I happen to go down and get torn to hell, then i guess thats my fault. But until that day happens, its just annoying Having people that cant say anything other that ATGATT. BTW, I always wear HELMET, BOOTS, blue jeans, and at least a shortsleeve shirt. Not cutoffs. And i try and remember my gloves all the time. But come on now, for real, any type of jacket when its 100 degrees and 75 percent humidity is just like an oven. } |
