Well after a little over one year on my 2003 XB9 I decided to look into an scg. I already had a low seat, but at 5'4" I was hoping for just a little more reach.

After looking into new, I happened onto a 06 scg with just 2500 miles and talked them into $5500 for it!

After sitting on it I couldn't believe the difference. The scg almost feels like a toy and I can nearly flatfoot! So, now the question is, are there any known problems with the 06 scg's I should be aware of. Any service things I need to do? I've never owned anything with such few miles on it.

Thanks

Also, good additions?

My 03 had the race kits installed, so I'd like something similiar to add performance and sound. My 03 sounds much meaner then the 06 scg. I liked my bike sounding like a v8 muscle car.

No issues that I'm aware of.

Good additions would be a Drummer or Special Ops exhaust.

Possibly the 07 or 08 inner air box cover. The one that's slotted on both sides instead of just the one side. (06 is the first year of 'air through air box above gas filler' rather than 'air through frame' such as the 03-05 models.)

I have an '06 XB12Ss, bought it used with similar miles over 2 years ago. After 11000 miles I just mounted my 3rd set of tires and 2nd set of front brake pads. I had to re-tighten the side stand pivot bolt once (now I lock-tight blue every thing I touch). I have gotten 68 mpg cruising down the highway and less than 40mpg having some fun. I get compliments where ever I go. I am pretty much stock (I don't want to draw too much attention as to how fast I'm really going generally)except for precision engineering bar risers and various touring & sport Buell seats. The XB's are the best all around sport bike choices I know. You got a great deal, enjoy

i have an '06 12R and the only REAL problem i've had with it is my front piston got a chip in it and had to have the entire front of the engine replaced at about 17,000 miles (piston, cylinder, head, valves). But that was probably a 1 in a million chance and i was that unlucky one. I have been averaging 47 mpg on it, 40 if i'm having too much fun, and mid 50's taking it easy and just cruising. I've heard that '06 was one of the better years for XB's cause of the lack of problems they had.

Mine's a '06 Ss. Problems so far...

Stumble at parking lot speeds (dealer said it wasn't there, but I could reproduce it at will).

Sticky clutch cable when delivered. Replaced under warranty in the first week.

Opened up the air box, added a K&N filter and a Jardine carbon slip on. After tuning with ECMSpy it's running stronger than ever and the low speed stumble has been removed.

I've recently added the baffle for the Jardine and still need to do a bit more adjusting on the fuel mapping, but it's real close.

Burned the #77 connector to the voltage regulator. I replaced it with the upgrade myself instead of dealer warranty because I needed the bike for a 1,300 mile trip I had planned. For under $25 I would suggest the upgrade on any XB before you wind up stranded with a dead battery hours from home. I was lucky and it died as I was slowing for my driveway!

My fan is dying a slow death. Dealer has it on order under warranty.

Over 16,000 miles so far in 14 months. I hate to think how many miles it would have if we didn't have winter around here! My problems have been minor and not really limited to the '06 model year. Get it!

P.S. I've been getting mileage in the mid to high 50's per gallon. Very happy!

Problems on my '06 Ss:

Cooling fan went belly up after 1st year, replaced under warranty. 2nd fan is on borrowed time (rumbling bearing).

Coughed/stuttered pretty bad, even when cruising. Turned out my bike generates a little more gunk from the crank case than most, and was dumping all that mess back into the intake. A breather hose reroute fixed that (do a search for lots of ways to reroute).

That's really been about it. I think all of these bikes tend to stumble under the 3500 rpms mark unless you do your own tuning. Probably mapped for emissions more than smoothness.

I don't believe there is any specific 06 only issues, just things that might fail that cover many years.

It stumbled inthe parking lot and the salesman killed it when pulling it into the back lot for me to get a decent look.

The stock "sound" leaves a lot to be desired compared to my buell race kit.

When I asked about gas he said high octane then had to come back after finding the mechanics use mid grade for every bike. So I figure one it has been sitting for awhile and two my bike acts up with anything less then 93 octane.

Still, a few scratches, but for 2500 miles $5500 seems a good deal to me. Appearently the original owner dropped it and it scared him away from bikes forever. 1st person to nearly buy it negotiated the price to $6000 but after a 20 minute ride decided the scg was to much bike compared to the sportster he came in on.

Their losses I'm hoping to be my gain! If anyone has some good part list recommendations let me know as this bike is totally stock, and we all know it can't stay that way for long, LOL.....

I had a new '05 City-X, basically the same bike. 13,000 miles in a little over a year, never had any problems that required warranty. A turn signal wire came unplugged once, but that was it. The most trouble free street bike I have ever had.

Oh, forgot to mention the kickstand bolt. It WILL back out on you, even with blue locktite. I've had to tighten mine up about 3 times now. Need to upgrade to the '07 C-clip design.

I have an 06 Scg with the Buell race kit on it since 1000 miles on the clock. Not a single problem what-so-ever. The race ECM is richer running so your headers dont turn blue so much. I think a richer mixture prevents a whole list of things that other folks have been whining about.

I have a 2006 XB12Scg ... only issue I have had was a clutch cable leaking at the primary case. The dealer replaced the cable under warranty and upgraded the cable retainer to the new improved one while they were at it. Only other issue is the factory Dunlops suck ... I replaced with Pirelli Diablo's and they are much nicer ...

I upgraded to 2007 intake cover, K&N, D&D exhaust, Traction Pegs, ECMSPY tune, oil bypass and catch can and ASV shorty Levers. It's now the PERFECT bike ....
