I did a few searches and couldn't find the answer... which H-D filter can I use on the XB? The local dealership doesn't handle Buells and thus won't touch Buell parts, so I have to use the Harley stuff if I want to buy locally.

I'd consider buying a different brand filter, but I'm swinging by to get the oil anyway, so I might as well grab a filter while I'm there.

i dont know what kind of H-D filter will fit (if any), but i've seen this guy on base here has a Fram filter on his bike. I wasn't able to get what number it is, but i would love to find out. I hate paying $8 for a filter when a perfectly good $4 will work

i would suggest a Napa gold (made by Wix) or a WIX filter over Fram.

couple replies down is a short list with part numbers....(including the HD #)

Thanks, thats what i've been searching for. Might try a couple different filters to see what one keeps the oil cleaner

I use K&N on the race bike. Not sure of the part number though.

AC = PF1233
Motorcraft = FL836
STP = S4967
k&n/ kn 177
wix/ 51394

A good cross reference is to use the filter that fits any 1988 to 2008 Toyota Corolla. It' the exact same filter.

I recently swapped a HD filter for a SuperTech. I should've taken a picture to show how close they are. They're just alike.

The SuperTech filter is a steal, IMO. Synthetic fiber-reinforced media, 98% single pass efficiency, 99% multiple pass efficiency - right up there with the $13 brands.

What about that oil bypass spring mechanism that the stockers have, that allows unfiltered oil to circulate in the event of a clog? Do any of the other brands have that feature?

you should only use a filter made for the application, due to the bypass mechanism is calibrated for the vehicle, using the wrong one "could" cause an issue if there was a blockage. however many people here will argue "i've used xxx filter and never had a problem!" just be aware of the possible failure mode.

here is some good reading, i have posted many times;

Wix/Napa #1394 is what I use and it is almost the same as the buell filter as far as specs go. fleetfilter.com has them for $4 each. Your local napa will have them, but mine charges $7.19 each, so i buy online.
