Looking for some input from other 06/07 owners. My new (to me 1100 mile) 06 XB9Sx clunks pretty hard into third no matter what rpm I shift at. 1-2 is like butter and 3-4 and 4-5 is nice but second to third is always a loud clunk. Fresh fluids, properly adjusted primary chain and clutch - the usual. Now I did notice on a demo ride in the spring that the 07s I rode seemed clunky too but I attributed that to maintainance issues on demo bikes. My current 04 12S shifts so much nicer and my 05 CityX shifted great too so I am disappointed with the 06 especially since it is supposed to have the better shifting tranny. Any thoughts from fellow 06/07 owners?

Maybe the transmission is not as smooth as your other Buells because it's relatively new and not broken in yet?

No I don't think that is the case as my other bikes shifted great right from the start. What is your 07 like? Does it clunk into third?

I have an 06 XB9SX and do not have the issue at 2300~ Mi. Switching gears feels the same from 1st through 5th. But I do recall a gear feeling clunky earlier but it seems to have gone away or I just got used to it. I will have to check next time I am on it.

This may not apply, but on my '06 Ss, I installed new pegs that were taller (due to the cleated grips), and my toe was getting wedged between the shifter. I had to adjust the shifter up a little to make some room. Suddenly I discovered that ALL my shifts were smoother after adjusting the lever. Dunno why or how, but moving it up a little softened all the clunks...?

mine got real clunky for a while, but then it went away.

i was just thinking the other day this may have been from the dealer adjusting the clutch or something, but I dont know really.

Its mostly OK now though (20K km), but sometimes it will make an almighty clunk out of nowhere on a change, very weird. i always assumed it was just a quirk of the harley box and didn't worry about it too much. I did take a few km's for the box to loosen up initially however.

The trans on my '07 12Ss has been smooth from day one. I found it easier to shift than my Kawi Z750 ever was.

Brent: My transmission seemed to shift smoother when it was new compared to now (~5,700 miles). I think my clutch needs an internal adjustment (stupid PITA setup IMO), but I'm not sure. It does clunk hard from 1-2 and 2-3 at the moment.

I have an 06 XB9SX with 15000 miles on it.

The shifting has always seamed to be a bit clunky. I dont think its as bad as most harely that I hear clunking away.

The only problem I have is the 2-1 downshift is so tough sometimes that I usually think I am in 1st only to find out when I pull away from a light that I am in second.

I do notice an improvement with new trans fluid though (I change it every 5k)

If you have not tried this yet, go by the book and do the full primary chain adjustment, and the full clutch adjustment... don't skip any steps or fudge any measurements. And adjust the shift lever so it is acting at a 90 degree angle as it approaches the end of its travel, and is a good position for you as you sit on the bike.

Made a big difference for me.

'05 9sx. I get the clunk on the 1-2 shift. 3rd feels fine.
Primary, clutch and cable all adjusted properly.

I had a similar problem on my 06XB9SX due to a slightly overfilled primary. To echo the sentiment of what Reepicheep said. Do all the adjustments by the book and this way you can rule the adjustments out.

My '06 XB9SX seems to be clunky 1-2-3--sometimes it is worse than other times. I topped off my primary fluid with the bike on the rear stand, which may have gave me a false reading. That might be the culprit. Yeah, i wonder if it is just me noticing it more or if the tranny is clunking more these days. I wouldn't mind if I knew the tranny wasn't getting thrashed.

If you used a rear wheel stand to check tranny/primary lubricant level, then you grossly overfilled it. There should never be a need to "top off the primary". Fill it per specifications, with the bike on flat and level groud, until the lubricant just touches the clutch diaphragm spring. Any more is likely to cause the issues you describe. With the bike supported by a rear wheel stand the overfill would be prodigious since much of the fluid would flow forwards leaving the clutch spring high and dry.

Read the owner's manual and be careful to follow the maintenance procedures as described.

I knew it. The reason that I thought it may need some more oil is that the gasket was leaking for a while--but the amount I added was way more than I thought was lost to leaking. Thanks for confirming, Blake. Needless to say, the problem will be fixed tonight.

Hey guys, search the forum already and got enough education to have an idea, but I wanted to ask about my specific situation.

I have an '06 XB9SX and changed the primary fluid to Mobil 1 75W90 synthetic. Seemed to be fine for about 5,000 miles. Had a leaky gasket, so I added Castrol Syntec 75W90 synthetic gear oil to get the oil level to spec. I overfilled the primary and have since corrected that problem.

After the topping off with the Castrol, on steady throttle there seemed to be a hesitation. Interestingly, it seemed to be gone or not as evident on WOT. It was also worse in low gears. I assumed it was a bad clutch adjustment. I readjusted and everything was to spec.

Could it be the Catrol that I added? Possibly does the Castrol have those friction additives causing the slippage? And since I added just a few ounces, do you think that new mixture might just become slippery enough to cause the slight clutch slipping I think I am experiencing?

Lastly, if the culprit is the Castrol and I purge the tranny, will it return to normal operation with Mobil 1 (or any good lube)

Thanks, guys.
