I find this discussion of Duc versus Buell ironic as both bikes are generally frowned upon re maintenance and reliability.

Having said that I love my S2 and one day hope to add a Monster to the stable.

Outrider, take it for a ride and see how it feels...

Consider that your X1 is rated at over 100HP at the crank.Torque? On paper, the Buell may have better #'s and obviously you can ride it well enough.

My 900SS dyno's 83HP/60FtLbs torque and that's with a full header system, open air box with K&N filter and PCII. Weighs around 400Lbs with fluids. I'd have to ask others, but I think I ride the SS 'better' than the S2...The SS is much lighter, more supple through the corners, smoother and feels quicker bottom to top. And, I like the way it looks and feels and handles.

Kevyn....your not really comparing apples to apples (or even apples to oranges). The S2 is nowhere near the same type of bike as the SS. The X1 can get closer for your comparison. Remember that the S2 is at the very least close to 500lbs with fluids. I'm guessing the X1 is closer to 425 soaking wet. That would explain part of the reason you ride the SS "better" than the S2.

I find that it's even hard to compare one Buell model to the next. My S3T feels much smoother and better handling than my S1W. Yet the S1 is easier to "throw around" in a tight corner. To me, it kinda like the S3 is a Mercedes CLK500 Coupe (smooth & refined handling; comfortable ride; plenty of power) while the S1W is like a Corvette (raw, rough and rippin' fast).

Both have their point a purpose. Probably for the same reasons you have the Duc SS and the Buell S2. Isn't it nice to have choices? : D

I had a 96 Ducati 900 ss cr, and traded it to Ricky for his RSS Buell 1200. The Ducati was really cool, sound power, handling, LOOKS, etc. Not really comfortable for me...40-50 miles at the most....I loved the sound and the power....

Woz, Jack, and others from American Sport BikeN went to the Ducati National event in Las Vegas a couple of years ago..Ducati was really cool in sponsoring this...there was the Ducati University, where they were having classes all day. They had many of the Italian folks there...One was a fellow in the engine design dept...He was showing how to do the shimming, etc. for the bike.....I t didn't look too difficult is you had a good teacher...I hear that most of the time, the clearances are okay, unless you run at the redline in every gear, all of the time.....belt changing was critical they said...every year, regardless of miles, due to the detoriation of rubber....even belts on the shelves in the dealership....only what I have heard....

I didn't have any problems with mine....the tune up and clutch plates , and yes the clutch slave unit. expensive though, if you have to take to the dealer. Lots of hours of work.

If I had kept mine, I would want to lower the pegs some and put some higher bars on it, so that I would fit better and enjoy the riding....the corbin that was on mine was bad....I would have to walk like a cowboy for a day or two.

I like all motorcycles....but I still love my buells better....rex

Outrider,
A point to consider: what is the resale market for the X1 vs for the Duc?
If you don't want to make the trade then point him in my direction. I don't know all the bugaboos about the 900SS's, but it might be fun finding out about them. Besides I've heard so much about the valve adjustment issues that I'm about ready to want to find out first hand what it's all about.

I am really getting a kick out of the Ducati posts. Let's see...Bomber wants me to trade so he can finally pass me, MikeJ wants me to trade so I can sell it and all seem fascinated with the mechanical intricacies of the Duc. Wow...

Hey guys...Remember me? I am the mechanically declined one. I have two HD/BMC dealers within 4 miles of me, not to mention a bunch of independent service shops and the HD/BMC parts distribution center isn't much further away.

It is over 30 miles to the nearest Duc dealer and I have no means of towing a bike. That in itself would normally sound crazy as I own two bikes (the X1 and a Wide Glide), however, the HOG/BRAG Roadside Assistance Program has me covered there.

Conclusion: No disrespect to either Ducati or their followers, but I will keep my X1. Heck, it fits, handles great and I can get it serviced easily. Then again, I live in HD/BMC Heaven...or is that HDI's version of Walgreen's "Perfect."

I stopped off at the local Duc dealer to test drive a monster. He told me they did not do test drives until I actually bought the bike.

Hmmm, a TEST drive?

What am I missing?

Bruce -- bast I've been able to determine is that HD/Buell and Triunmph are the only brands who's dealers do test rides as a general rule . . ..

a long term relationship with the dealer of another brands may alter that . . . . . . .

you're missing nothing a short course in insurance and customer service wouldn't clear up {grin}

Actually, I have NEVER had an issue getting a test drive from local San Diego dealers like Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kawasaki. Tons in fact and it helped them sell me bikes. Buell too!

The only dealers who flat out refused me were HD (on a Sporty) and Ducati.

I spent 30 years in the insurance business and am licensed as an agent in CA. These issues are easily handled, as are the liability issues IF you really want to allow test rides. In fact, my local dealer lent me a bike to take my CA road test on.

Anyway, I would not drop over 10G on a bike I did not test. His loss, not mine.

Interesting, isn't it? The local Duc dealer can't sell his 02s or 03s and he wonders why????

My Ducati dealer let me test ride a Multistrada and offered up a couple of BMW's if I was interested. Three H-D/Buell dealers wouldn't allow it. The one I bought my XB9SL from allowed test rides on Buells....as my new XB9SL had 60 miles on it when I bought it and the rear tire looked like it had several hundred on it.... I guess some of those 60 miles were done standing still...

Capt - the guy selling that dress was on the news today...too funny. Over 2 million hits???

Test rides sell motorcycles - What did Hanibal say we covert? Buell used to keep tabs on "rides turned to riders". It's good business.

The first Ducati gathering was in Italy and was (from talking to friends at Motociclisimo - I did not go) very well done. The idea caught on and it is now very well attended and received. The "Buell Model" was not overlooked in preparing the first.

Outrider.....at a mere 400lbs wet, the Duc should easily fit in the trunk of the Miata : D you'll just need to put the wheels in the passenger seat

To whom it may concern:

I have restricted the access of someone who was posting well outside the bounds of accepted decorum on Badweb.

I have repeatedly suggested that the individual say whatever they please, but follow guidelines.

They were unable to comply.

Any questions or problems, I take responsibility.

I've no personal agenda. I just want to be able to read my Buell stuff without wading through vulgarity.
